The truth is ... Xbox ditched generations with the Xbox One.

He's essentially saying that the Xbox One was the last console that stayed with the nature of a 'console generation'. With the Series X/S, Microsoft will no longer share a time period with market competitors in releasing iterations of its consoles. I get what he is trying to say, and I don't think he's wrong. We're moving in a weird direction in console gaming, god bless Nintendo for always being late to the party.

What he is saying isn't too far fetched. Internally, the industry has been looking at how best to replicate similar release model to that of cell phones for software and hardware.
Having a new system come out more regularly in combination with software that can maintain compatibility across multiple iterations of the hardware, gets users locked into an eco system, purchase pattern that generates a lot of predictable and steady revenue stream.
Xbox not taking off like MS hoped already has them pivoting to GP as it's primary growth focus. It's not crazy to believe that they would also shift release patterns to a less powerful, less expensive, but more frequent release of the xbox.

They only ditched generations in the sense that they refused to innovate with the new console. Same OS, same controller, same lack of exclusive games or games that leverage the selling points of the new hardware.

Sony got a lot of flack because of the "we believe in generations" statement, people took this to mean that their first party games would be exclusive, but I think they actually meant that the overall experience of playing on PS5 will literally feel different, even the same games will be more immersive. You can argue if that is true or not, but I believe that was their aim.

Xbox One>Xbox One X>Series S>SeriesX
Seems generations are still there. Although, generational performance leaps are not what they used to be, but that's the nature of tech/price

I think spencer came out and said it and now there are rumors that they are starting next gen early.
Its such a great way for them to fall even further behind, I can already see the narrative of Series X2 being ‘more powerful’ than the PS5 Pro, then when PS6 kicks off next gen for real with a significant hardware advantage it will change to a ‘but its about the engagement, muh gamepass’ and whatever other nonsense cope they favour.

The thing is, it was always so obvious. But since we got the leaks, its embarrassing because we all know it before it even happens. They have no choice but to be similar in their narrative because it's not very deep. It's all reactive to Playstation. Everything they do is.

I am so sick and tired of people ALWAYS making excuses for Xbox! They have failed this generation much like they did last generation! Don't try sugar coat it with "but they gave up generations"... BULLSHIT!
Microsoft and their die hard fans are saying shit like this and pushing sub services and engagement times in games over sales cause they are getting trounced where it counts- in console sales and software sales! It's a simple concept that Microsoft and their fans just need to deal with.
Believe me it kills me to see Microsoft and their blind fans act like this. I love my Xbox consoles. Always have. I play my Series X more than my PS5 ffs! But this bullshit of trying to wave away the importance of consoles needs to stop. Outside of mobile gaming (they really aren't dedicated gaming devices no matter how you look at it) consoles (and PC) are the main way to game. Microsoft got into gaming via consoles as they saw the money it was making. Now that they are failing them and their fans are trying to paint different narratives. It's all a load of horseshit.

With no games/exclusives and no real way to leverage all of these acquistions thus far.....I could care less. Release 30 new consoles in the next 6yrs and it wont make a difference.
Microsoft has never been in the business of benefitting gamers.

From Xbox Live requiring membership from inception to trying to push digital and lack of ownership in modern times. They only try to portray being gamers.
Atleast Sony and Nintendo know what they are- primarily focused on games or sink. Microsoft is more concerned with penetrating your home on as many screens as possible along with all of their other products.

Total revenue for the gaming division grew 8 percent for the latest financial quarter, which follows the tech company becoming a video games powerhouse by closing a $68.7 billion deal to acquire Activision Blizzard.

They don’t need the Xbox hardware though then. Can just do GamePass, publish games on all platforms and maybe have a cloud streaming box.

No need to spend $billions on designing, making and selling consoles.
