PS3 software update 4.91 is out

Nice, only reason I want to soft mod is so I can force the 3D TV mode on without the need for a 3D TV. PSVR can function as a 3D TV and you can daisy chain the PS3 into the PSVR breakout box. Brute force VR for something like KZ3 and Resistance 3.
This is absolutely insane what the homebrew scene has been able to do with this hardware. I would never do this, but now I'm hopping on YouTube and watching a tutorial video on this.

Yea, I think YT is pretty sparse with in depth tutorials but it's definitely possible. I'm dying to do it but part of me is terrified about potentially bricking the PS3 (which I know is rare), I love that console so much and want to keep it in its vanilla state for as long as I can.

I think the steps are: enable 3D on PS3, boot up 3D game. Play a 3D movie via PS4 with headset connected, it will trigger 3D playback in the headset. Then remove the PS4 from the breakout box and add in the PS3.

The one in my cupboard is on FW 3.5 as it was used to rip SACDs for my foobar music library. It'll never get updated as long as it still functions; though more recently one of Sony's dirt cheap Blu-ray players can be used for the same purpose, so there's a contingency in place.

That said, even though I own the actual SACDs, most have their .isos available for "acquisition" which saves me a tonne of ripping time, so it's quite rare for it to come out now.

I bought a brand new Super Slim during Covid and I've kept it in its original state. I have bought all the games online that I can, but now I'm buying discs. The disc tray is such a terrible design, I've thought about getting HEN on it and load my discs that way. It will happen eventually, but I'm holding on as long as possible as well.

That $600 bought a long time of support. I wonder what kind of numbers they have to show that this is still necessary? I might load mine up tonight. We still have a few 3D TV's stored too. I might make it a weekend project and mount one of them in a spare space for some PS3/3D nostalgia.

I actually just ordered Silent Hill: Downpour. Back when the Triple was current I had probably 100+ physical games. I purged too many years ago and am now getting the few that remain. Collection is probably 60+ now. I have a ton of digital games too and I think I've exhausted what I need off the store. Glad too because it seems like Fatal Frame 1-3 have been delisted and I just got those within the past 3-4 months.

200 physical games.. a lot play direct from the bluray. I miss these days..

My ps4 physical collections feels worthless

End of an era aaah

Man, the PS3 was such a vibe for me. Perfect time in my life, incredible games releasing constantly and not a care in the world. This console such a huge part of my 20's. I still play it every year too. I was such a Sony Pony back then.

Interesting it's still getting updates, but it will be a shame when it finally goes for good.

Same here dude.

I loved the PSX and my older brother got a PS2 at launch but he took it with him after he got out of boot camp. I missed out on pretty much the entirety of the PS2 dominance and only had a GCN which I barely used. Then I bought a Wii at launch out of curiosity, that honestly made me dislike gaming as a whole really. Then I got a PS3 so I could watch Blade Runner on Blu Ray. Dead Space had just released so I snagged it and WOW. I could not believe what I had been missing and I was 100% in Sony's pocket. I was making good disposable money then being in the Navy and it was just game after game after game. I had them all. When the PS3 started it's comeback, wow, what a generation. So much fun.

Pro Tip for those who stream or simply like to capture footage for upload. You could even use it to rip streaming only shows.

PS3 has HDCP that can't be turned off so it won't work with modern Elgato devices but a $15 HDMI splitter from Amazon will completely bypass it. Just have the HDMI from the PS3 go to the HDMI splitter and then run that HDMI out to Elgato.

I just recently dusted off my old PS3 slim and hooked it back up to my HTS because I remembered I'd burnt all of my old cd collection to the HD. The other day I was trying to listen to some digital music on Amazon Music, and they shuffle shit around now unless you pay premium. I couldn't even straight up play an album I bought digitally on there, so it's back to good old fashioned cd's for me. I was surprised as all hell when I discovered that neither my PS5 or Series X wouldn't even play my cds.

Just picked up a PS3 yesterday, I wish I never sold it. Rebuilding my PS3 library is gonna be expensive. Any idea where to find cheaper games than ebay?
Definitely check the PS3 store. It's kind of a pain at first to get the multi-factor authentication and you can only add funds via your wallet, can't use a CC, but the Ratchet & Clank PS3 games are only $10 (I think) and there's some other gems for cheap.

Most games aren't too expensive on the used market but some are getting up there. All the 1st party bangers should be cheap as hell, it's the more obscure stuff like Folklore, Splatterhouse, SH: Downpour when it starts getting more pricey.

Amazing post. It's such a weird feeling at how nostalgic the PS3 is now. Thanks for sharing.

I've been playing Final Fantasy XIII and having a great time, but what I really love is just powering it up and hearing the strings as it loads. It's such an elegant OS [minus the revamped playstation store].

I do wish they would patch it so the ps3 works better with surround sound and stereos.

I was chipping away at FFXIII too a few weeks back. I made it to Gran Pulse last summer but started a fresh game for YT capture, just a few hours in. The OST is so good, I understand why some people don't like XIII but I personally have always enjoyed the game. Paradigm system is great once you finally learn Haste.

I'm afraid of updating, because I've read some reports saying that the console stopped reading disks at all just after installing. Someone already installed it? Everything ok?

I'm not promoting it or anything but worldofbooks is one of the more reasonable places to buy games. Outside of digital purchases I'm in the same boat as you. I had a huge collection of physical media but sold all of it at the end of the PS3 generation and now regret it.

I actually have the original Motorstorm and Pacific Rift coming in the mail from them now. Bought both for roughly $15 USD total. I had 3D Rift in my digital collection from back in the 3DTV days and with my G29 and a Brook Ras1ution adapter it was awesome with a wheel!

Man that's awesome I'm going to look. I found a goodwill website that sells bundles of PS3 games for 30 bucks but the shipping is expensive. Still might be worth checking out.

PS3 is where some of the greatest titles remain to this day ie: Top Spin, Blur, Ridge Racer 7, Motorstorm series, Alpha Protocol etc....some of these titles you can only DREAM of getting new entries on for the PS5, much less the PS5-Pro
