Why does Sony make female characters uglier in their games?

Doubt its on purpose, i believe this is simply the best devs can do.
Youre comparing photos that capture majority of real world details against low resolution 3d models that have to be rendered 60 times per second on top of running a game with low resolution assets and most of all primitive lighting compared to the sun.
It would take multiple seconds to render a single frame that matches real photos on even rdna4, cmon papito.

Capcom does the 'doll' thing where all the models are significantly brushed up (with perfect make-up all of the time - including the males), compared to ground truth.
All you're saying is that realistic humans are not most desireable by your(mass market?) preferences, which - I mean isn't exactly a revelation, make-up and other 'enhancements' were invented thousands of years ago for a reason.
But I do find it peculiar that there's all this effort being put into 'preventing' variable beauty standards in content being produced (doesn't really matter which side of the argument people land on - the critique of other extremes are just as stupid). I used to be under impression noone is forced to consume stuff they dislike, that's how media used to function at least, but in the age of internet I guess anything we don't fully like must be censored at the source.
I guess that's why DLSS5 is coming to solve everyone's problem. Input your preference into the machine and it will hyper-sexualize, fatten, gender/race swap or whatever else you want your game characters to suit your optimal viewing pleasures.

I was satisfied with most of character models from the state of play. A lot of devs have clearly listened to players.
Even Sony.. it could have been worse. They were even too ashamed to show off intergalactic.
But those Sony prestige studios still seem to think players don't want sex appeal in their games. Laufey started of fine with that torn yellow dress, and then they put her into that utterly boring armor for some reason.

I mean again I followed the actress in DareDevil on netflix that you used as example and without make up her face as a lot of human imperfections and can appear very "rough" sometimes in some camera shot if it's clear what I mean.Nice theory but you are wrong

CD NPCs or even playable characters still dont look anywhere near real, but obviously much better designs under RT and captured in-game unlike comressed YT which probably does a favour to GoW tho since it hides a lack of detail. While CD has RT lighting, its low quality, but RT will still always wipe the floor with whatever AO/GI SSM use (i believe its still 2007s SSAO). RE has shit lighting too, but you can at least mod in PT, but that still isnt as good as real photos.
And Capcom characters dont look good under any lighting (i would post the RT off, RT on, PT on if i had it saved)
Both CD/RE are clearly a league above GoW and have much nicer designs, but still are no match when it comes to details if you put them against real world people and especially enviroments, even the newest RE game with best case lighting doesnt come close to matching photos.
As for GoW, game just looks overall quite mediocre graphically and to me the character quality is in line with the rest of the package.
Do CD/RE characters look good by comparison? yes
Detailed enough to match real world photos? nope, no game will ever be good enough, but they close the gap a lot more
My point is: i dont think its on purpose, but competency/tech/gpu power

My theory is that the devs are so proud of the realism of their rendering technique (which capture all the slight imperfections, skin blemishes, etc.) that they purposely push for this no make up look that show those imperfections more. They seem to forget that hollywood has make up artists since day 1 whose role is to make actors and actresses look better by using make up.

They did a 1:1 modeling. Some details are bound to be lost when converted into a video game, as graphics are still not literally 100% photorealistic.
She is supposed to be in her 2018 age, not current age.

The actress had an accident or something like and she couldn't play the role for the sequel for what we knew. I think she looks like the part. She's a retired God (giantess) with a son and the story feels would be much more about the "promise" which would lean on mature relationship (like husband and wife). How Kratos was the dad, she will be the war-sy wife/mom.
To have her look stunning not aged at all would feel wrong for the story beat. Freya looks the same and it suited her.

Yeah, the issue wasn't gameplay there. Storyline was terrible, writing was all drawn out, it got really old halfway through.
As to this topic, IMO, it's Sony's insistence on full mocap coupled with their lighting engine and refusal to touch up characters as needed.
The whole no makeup argument is dumb, it's a game, they can do whatever they want with the character look. They didn't need to go all Stellar Blade doll up look but touching things up would have been fine.
However, this is usual thing for Sony studios to do, can just look at SP2 MJ and Jean in Wolverine.
