Yeah so lol$240,000 per year is a comfortable middle-class wage in San Francisco and Seattle?!?!
That's insane! How do people live there that work in bars, shops, hotels etc?
I make 150K
I take home around 7K
Average rent for any place decent is 2500 minimum + INSANE PG&E, would be average 200 a month for electricity, then you have just normal cost of living stuff like transportation 200 a month for me and that's on the low end of about 10 each way but depending on where you take public transit it could easily be 15-20.
Food for me and the boyfriend are insane for what you get and it's not I cook like a crazy person but it can easily go over 300 for both of us. Easily. And I largely buy beans, rice, meat and veggies, and I'll cook a special meal once a month like gumbo, red beans and rice or lasagna.
I've been cheap with phones for years so I have visible for 25, insurance for 150 for my truck. Luckily, I cashed out my entire 401K and I haven't told my family but the 430K I had I was able to negotiate a half decent place in Oakland near Lake Merritt (1 bed and 1 bath, keep that in mind) for an all cash offer. Realistically I'm maybe 1200 a month in expenses.
Let's say I had to rent for 2400 for a 1/1 apartment and I didn't have the take home I do. 150K is like the 90K I was making living near the Air Force base of my last job.
I made this based off some assumptions like the average car payment, gas for movement of said vehicle and a "fun budget" of 100 - this is a "living within your means with no debt" budget.
Expense
---
Rent
Electricity / gas
Water / sewer / trash
Internet
Renter's insurance
Phone
Car payment
Car insurance
Gas
Food
Fun / personal
Estimated Total
TL; DR 150K in the Bay Area is like 70-80K in other areas, if that. Giving developers a salary of 200K allows them to do something other than work, commute, save money and binge Netflix.
