No. You have to understand that your feelings are unnatural. These urges Other M give you aren't right. That game is evil and you will be evil if you enjoy it, Boney! I'm just trying to save you!

Don't think I'll ever get around to playing it though. can't really get into Metroid.
Other M isn't a Metroid game. Try Super Metroid. Fusion is also a good introduction to the series because it's more linear.

it's not a case of lineararity. Metroid just never clicked with me.

So chut up

Assuming EAD 4 and Retro are currently working on the new system, the release schedule for Nintendo's big teams for the system should look like (Going by standard dev cycles):

Late 2012: New Super Mario Bros. 3/Pikmin 3
Late 2013: Retro Studios game (Likely MP4 or DKC5 but could be new IP to attract western gamers)
Mid 2014: Smash Bros 4
Late 2014: Mario Kart Stream
Mid 2015: Super Mario Stream
Late 2015: Zelda Stream
Mid 2016: Another Retro Studios game

With casual games and more minor games also thrown in.

And then we wait until November for the good games to come out.

Yeaaaaah *sigh*

Maybe since they have apparently been ticking at Pikmin 3 for a while with, like, a two man team and a janitor in the five days between games they are actually developing the team will be able to hobble that title to the Wii HD shortly after launch

that would certainly tide me as we wait for the launch window drought to end

Several rumors indicate a much earlier release. A summer release if IGN or even that French site are correct. So it's not out of the realm of possibility.

The Saturn launched in may, but yeah, we all know the sad outcome.
Dreamcast launched in September in US. Though it had a sad fate....

I'm guessing Sunday, November 18th, 2012 in NA.

Launching into the holiday season is always the best route to go, especially if it launches with the right price.

Systems launching outside of the holidays inevitably faces questions about decreased sales after the initial launch and potential long droughts in momentum. Do this one right Nintendo, don't go the 3ds route or you'll find yourself having to answer questions about the lack of sell outs again.

well i would assume that as far as consoles go, and if the rumors are true, it would have the best-looking versions of multiplatform games (although that's nothing to say of controls and online, and what features other consoles may get). my 360 was my go-to for multiplatform games for the controls and for generally having the best builds, although that's changed now that my 360 is dead.

if i had to guess, pikmin 3 was probably underway in 2008 when we first heard about it, and probably at some point in 2010, moved over to the next console. we'll probably see it at e3 either way. the team is probably also working on a new 2d mario game as well. while the 3ds might get it due to it probably sharing the same assets as nsmbw, the fact that ead tokyo's already doing a mario game for the 3ds, and the rumors about the cafe having screens on the controllers pushes me to think it could be a holiday title for the machine.

Aha, a janitor you say? I'm a shoe in to join "Team Troid".

That "press release" was vague...it seems like it was intended for investors so it might have meant fiscal year 2012, not calendar year.
And what dates do you think FY 2012 covers?

They've made a lot of noise about treating third parties a lot better this time around. Its hot air, isn't it? :(

Not if the scuttlebutt about third parties having had dev kits for months is correct, and certainly not if the rumours about them having shopped the system around for feedback in 2009/2010 (or earlier) are true. At worst that's given third parties some 18 months to prepare launch titles, and at best they've had a couple of years heads-up - unprecedented for a Nintendo console, I think.

If they wanted to improve relations, allowing external companies early access and the chance to provide feedback on a system in development would certainly be one way of doing it...

In the US?

summer: SMS, Genesis, TG16, SNES
spring: Saturn

In Japan?

summer: Famicom, N64
spring: 3DO, PS2

I thought for Nintendo it meant the fiscal year ending March 2012.

They title their "annual reports" by the year in which the fiscal year ends...so they just released their 2011 annual report:

it's in the OP and it can't be more clear.

Have the implications of the controller hosting a sensor of sort and a front facing camera been discussed in this thread? The combination of the two could lead to what kind of applications or gimmicks? could it work like Kinect (body motion sensing)?

I think it could be more clear, and I'm glad Iwata made the special note. In the reports from a year ago they weren't including a separate 3DS shipment number, but they sure planned on that hitting within the next year.

I think it'll release in the summer. They just need software to push it, not the Holiday rush.

Are you thinking like post E3 launch? That could work to ride the high of E3, if they impress. Also cuz kids are out of school parents might throw them a bone, good grades type reward?

Outside of that I'm not sure about a summer launch. Nintendo themselves have recognized some concern about the 3ds launch and I don't think they want to repeat that. Summer is not as big a buying season as the holidays, so that could hurt them. Also if this console is expensive and if games are gonna be $60 I think Nintendo will need the buying mentality of the holidays to push consumers. Having a slow launch creates bad news, limits a systems mindshare, and kills momentum. I'm not sure even good software can push a new console in the summer period if its too expensive.

Nah, it won't be anything like kinect. Maybe some photo capture, if there was a camera.

They need to hit with a bang with this one - they can't afford to launch soft like they have with the 3DS, where they have a significant lead on the PSP2 and third parties (in Japan, at least) strongly behind it.

If the software - from third parties and Nintendo themselves - is there come Q2/Q3 2012 I could see them going for it.

With 2+ years of development time, third parties should have no excuse.
They could do a port of a lot of games already out AND an original title for the system in that time.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
If I were a betting man I would put money on this thing hitting right after E3 next year.

Would it be 2 years though? Do developers have the dev kits yet? If they just gettin' em now and the Wii HD releases in early 2012, then I'd wager it'll still be the same. Ports and ports since next-gen development is a lot more intensive than even development for the 3DS so it takes longer.

So there will still be a relatively weak launch lineup. Unless of course you go gaga for ports. Then the launch lineup will be the greatest thing ever having all these games other platforms have had for years

I'd say;

If huge unveil this E3: Spring 2012

Or announcement with not too much shown: November 2012

I'm betting on the latter but I'm still hoping for a huge unveil.

EA has had them since last August.

If they launch by next August, or just go ahead and do a Holiday release, then that's 2+ years.

Well, since it'll be playable on the showroom floor, it'll be more than just an announcement.

Nintendo certainly seems to be doing that. I started with the Classic Pro and kinda extended to the 3DS. Iwata made a comment about not doing something alone. I think it was something related to development

Oh man, this year's E3 is going to be amazing. I wonder if Microsoft will take a jab at Sony. Although it could all be overshadowed by Project Café.

MS is in their own little world right now.
We'll see Gears, the Halo Remake and lots of Kinect stuff.

I wonder how the territories will be handled. Wii and DS had a NA release first if I remember correctly, but the Gamecube, 3DS, and DS Lite all released in Japan first. Considering the PS3 is outselling the Wii at a decent rate now in Japan, I would assume that Japan would get the system first. I would love a simultaneous worldwide release, but I somehow doubt it.

McHuj said:
Nothing there indicates that they've had dev kits since August. EA probably knew the spec then. You can do a lot of preliminary work and planning without a devkit.

That still means development began last year. As opposed to the 3DS were it began a few months before E3.

Third-parties' support will mostly just be porting over their multiplatform titles that are going to release around the release of Cafe to the system which shouldn't take that long. Whether they take advantage of the system's features for their games is less likely to happen in a near launch title.

I strongly doubt that. A straight 360 to Wii 2 port would be ridiculously easy, you're essentially going from a triple core Power PC with unified shaders ATI card to exactly the same on Wii 2 except it's more powerful and has more memory. The main issue in porting will be adapting 360/PS3 controls to this new tablet controller. Let's hope it's fully able to cope with he controls of 360/PS3 games or we'll be left with a PSP situation where the hardware is good enough but the controls aren't.
