Games that are, and will always be perfect.

Super Mario Bros. 3
Halo: Combat Evolved
Metroid: Zero Mission
Zelda: Link's Awakening
Yoshi's Island
Portal

None of these games are perfect, but they're all timeless to me.

Its a shame all list threads contain basically no explanation.

Well, to explain mine, I just played Soul Calibur II again recently and was reminded of just how fast and fluid the controls were. Plus, just about every other aspect of the game, the music, graphics, modes, etc. were about as perfect as you can get and the game doesn't feel terribly dated, except perhaps for the lack of online.

I somewhat think there is no such thing as a 'perfect game' as well. It's not really perfection as much as the addictive nature of everything in the game for the person playing it (the music, the levels, the gameplay, etc.). A lot of what's listed I loved but a few (like Portal and Halo: CE) I gave up on at the ending/final section.
I guess I clam up at countdown timers.

For me, it's three games I consider perfect:

Super Mario Bros. 3, Zelda: A Link to the Past and Disney's Aladdin.

Metal Gear Solid 2 and 3. Can't think of a single thing that was not perfect in either of those games.

I'm about half way through MGS2 via the MGS HD Collection, and I can think of two major things that are wrong with it: Raiden and the setting. I'm finding the experience to be incredibly boring, esp. after replaying the first MGS and being reminded of how great the original still is.

So many great games in this thread. I was thinking

Mario World
Donkey Kong Country 1 & 2
Super Metroid
God of War II
Castlevania Symphony of the Night

And to add one that hasn't been mentioned:

A game that you don't think could be improved upon in any way ever. Regardless of the new and improved technology and modern standards of game design.

I can only think of one.

I know it's cliche but it's also true. The game is perfect in every way. It's does everything right and nothing you change could make it any better than it already is. I think this game is the pinnacle of all games and everything since has been a step backwards.

Huge, scary fuck bosses? Check.
Amazing sense of progression? Check.
Timeless 2D graphics and art design? Check. The soundtrack and graphics STILL make this game an incredibly engrossing game over 15 years since its release. I think the game is as pretty today as it was when I first played it.

I like you.

I think Super Metroid is one of the very few games where playing through it, you wouldn't change a thing about it, except for that save point at the end. Just immaculate design, everything about it is just class, the atmosphere is simply incredible and draws you in.

Game that instantly came to mind: Super Metroid.

OP delivers.

Follow this principle, I find games scored as 10/10, A+, etc. to be a ridiculous. I enjoy well made games but I don't state them as perfect, nothing will ever be "perfect"

Once you realize perfect games can't exist, you realize that scores of 10/10 or A+ aren't representing the idea of the game being perfect. If you think that, then those scores could never be used, and that's silly.

There can be only one.

Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

With the expansion pack, it gets even more perfecter.

People need to stop saying SFII. Like most fighting games, it has character imbalance. That's a huge imperfection right there.

How wrong you are
Despite having some very clever plot and thematic happenings, the script is atrocious, in both the quality of the dialogue and the amount of it.

The acting lacks nuance.

Some of the casting is terrible.

And that's just criticising the non-game elements. To call any Metal Gear game anything close to perfect is ridiculous.

However, it is worth pointing out that in the way the OP has defined it, 'perfect' doesn't mean 'best'. You could reasonably hold the opinion that Super Metroid is perfect, MGS2 is far from perfect, yet still think MGS2 is the better game.
