ok, so some unofficial details which will be unconfirmed until Grigorovich confirms it but it's likely true because the man is close to the studio, knows Grigorovich and is quite well known in the industry:

1)The game was going to be a PC exclusive. GSC didn't have resources for console development and publishers didn't want to pick it up for consoles because of two possible reasons: 1)it's a single-player post-apocalypse title from Eastern Europe won't likely to sell well in Europe and US 2)GSC's terms of deal were too crazy for them.
2)Grigorovich didn't like the direction of the game, but some people say that the game was turning out great.
3)Grigorovich has been thinking about closing the studio for almost a year. Possible reason - he just got bored with this.
4)Law enforcement version isn't likely to be true because STALKER IP isn't registered in Ukraine and they would get nothing
5)The guy on twitter is just a PR from South Africa, he didn't know and is looking for work now
6)Grigorovich still owns IP. He can give it to somebody but there are no suitable studios except 4A which have tense relationship with Grigorovich.

If STALKER2 was going to be PC-exclusive after all, then GSC's closure is sad news indeed. No surprise that Western publishers were hesitant; they just don't understand these types of games.

It does sound a bit like GSC overreached and Grigorovich's apparent mood about the studio and game can't have helped. Still, I have the feeling this is far from the end for STALKER. Let's see in a few years time.

Doesn't sound promising really.
I didn't play Stalker personally but I have heard good things about it and was planning to give it a go soon.

Out of the blue. Stalker is a 4million-selling ip which branched to TV and clothing. They seemed to have very stable financial feet.

Maybe they operated with consoles version in mind and got burned when they couldn't land a deal?

NOOOOOoooooOOOOOOooooooOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooOOOOOOO !

They said console ports were a possibility and now there is none .... ~(T_T)~

The console port is what killed this game. They didn't have the resources for a multiplatform title and as a result no one wanted to publish their game.

The reason, which I believe - STALKER 2 is obtained only for the PC, an agreement with publishers on the console did not work, and self-publishing the game under the console at the GSC does not have resources. Some say that the GSC demanded incredible condition, others that Western publishers do not want to postapokalipsisa from Eastern Europe. It is clear that the story the game on a PC with a target market in Eastern Europe would be sold in small editions.

Fuck Western Publishers. Worthless shits would rather rehash Michael Bay simulators a hundred times because God forbid a game that doesn't have fucking regen health and QTE actually be allowed to exist.

I wouldn't blame western publishers. They are not charity, they are public-traded companies and their CEOs are obliged to greenlight games for the largest market possible and the most broad audience. They are not a private joint where some dudes make stuff they and their friends like. STALKER would sell ok on PC in the long run. But it would be a slow burner which you couldn't present to investors as a quarter winner. Have you noticed that Tripwire were self-publishing their games from the beginning? That Team Ace (Zeno Clash) didn't have a publisher as well?

Don't hate the player, hate the game.

Just read this.

Fuck. I was late to the STALKER series, but they are some great fucking games. As far as I'm concerned, no other single player FPS in the past several years even comes close, and these days we need games like STALKER more than ever. What a goddamn shame.

Well, for one, THQ was very satisfied with Metro 2033's sales, and a lot of them were on the PC. http://www.joystiq.com/2010/05/05/metro-2033-has-been-very-profitable-for-thq-ceo-says/

"It's a very profitable title for us," "A lot of the sales were done on PC," he added, "and a lot of the sales were also done through digital mechanisms that don't get captured by any service."

THQ is likely to be bankrupt soon.

Also I think GSC were bargaining for some ridiculous terms and nobody wanted this. 4A games work for cheap, it seems, but they pay them enough money to feel comfortable in Ukraine. A russian studio located in Moscow would be much more expensive for comparison. And it still would be cheaper than some western studio (not much cheaper though methinks).

who the hell is Grigorovich?

the founder and owner of the studio.

Not actually that important
I wouldn't compare it to HL2 but the atmosphere was incredible. They definitely successfully carried that over from the STALKER games.

Looked ridiculously good maxed on PC, as well. Still one of the best looking games there is.

Vanilla?
Which one? I'm ashamed I've never played a game in the series, lost track of it when they kept delaying the first one

Tragedy. GSC will be missed.

Oh well, we'll still have the original three games to sing songs of woe around the campfire in.

I was talking about Metro 2033 in that post...

But regardless, play SoC with the Complete mod and then CoP, which is fine vanilla but there's lots of great mods for it too. Some people like Clear Sky, I found it to be pretty dull and it recycled a lot of content from SoC. You'd be fine skipping it.

CoP > SoC >>>>> CS for me.

That sucks. But I think developers need to stop being so naive and get their business straight. They sign their lives away to these publishers. Need to think bigger than that.

And stop making such big, blockbuster games. It's obviously not sustainable.

What exactly does the Complete mod do? I'm many hours into SoC and don't want to start over unless it makes a huge difference.

somebody from the team posted in comment section of the blog post. He said that Grigorovich assembled the team during the lunch and told the developers that the project and the company are closing. He gave them their salary, a STALKER calendar for 2012 and some games magazine (with a preview most likely).

that is it.

Time for 4A to make a true spiritual successor in Metro 3: Open World Stalker Clone.

Sucks man. Sucks hard. STALKER is my favorite IP. :(
