A NeoGAF iPhone Web App

Status
Not open for further replies.
Mines been having issues intermittently the last few days. I thought it was my phone, glad to know I'm not alone.

I miss the search and not being able to post topics, since I browse GAF on my phone 99% of the time.

Is multi-quote being worked on? If not, I'd appreciate an option to have my quotes show up as just the plain text box instead of the little panel we see now, for purposes of easier cut/paste multi-quoting.

Also, my ability to post threads has seemingly disappeared, and I haven't been banned or juniored as far as I know.

Co-signed, I can't find anyway to multiquote.

Is there anything that can be done about auto-correct not working in the post field on the Galaxy Nexus's browser? I'm not sure what the cause could be... but it sure makes posting from my phone a headache. :\

that'll teach you.

also, is there any chance we are going to get an upgrade for retina displays? I spend way more time in this app than I should...

Am I the only one who cannot search or subscribe to threads? Seems like it's been that way for a while.

It's like that for everyone. I PM'ed ckohler earlier this month, and he said that he's just been very busy and unable to update the web app. When he frees up some time, he is planning on reinstating old features and implementing some new ones.

Awesome. Thanks for the info,

Currently sploded for me :(

Weird, it checks out on downforjustme or whatever that site is as well...

On AT&T 3G in Philly...looks like they're having some issues!

Also, tiny thing, but when people link to individual posts, it doesn't work anymore.

Ckohler: please identify the text input field as something that allows text correction on android.

I'm not sure what that takes, but I'm convinced it has to do with tex input field type.

You mean autocorrect as you type? I have android and it works for me. Version 2.2.

Also, I second the subscribe feature. Also, I can't post topics either.

I turned back on Thread making. I'm still too busy to do much else right now so Search and thread subscribing is still on hold.

Sounds like you're busy right now, but when you want to get going on the official webapp project let me know.

Interesting....4.x.x has introduced a text bug.

I actually think it has more to do with the browser you're using. For example, I had correction problems with Dolphin Browser HD on my Nexus S, but the text fields work fine in Boat Browser. I would recommend switching to Boat Browser anyway, since it's amazingly awesome.

Can't wait for this!

FUUUUUCK!!!!!

I'd rather pay and get an ad-free version. Hell, I'd pay $1 a month for that easy. I'd pay $5 a month!

Please be free!

It's not going to be a native Android/iOs app. It will still be a Web App like it is now, only it will have mobile advertisements, feature all of the same features of the full site, and probably redirect to m.neogaf.com or something like that.

Sure, but that doesn't mean we wouldn't be able to pay to remove ads! You have no idea how happy I'd be to finally be able to support NeoGAF directly and get a better user experience at the same time.

That would allow both the ad-supported and ad-free sites to exist and everyone gets what they want!

...but getting paid isn't really EviLore's style :P

Yeah, good idea. I surf neogaf almost exclusively on my phone nowadays, and I feel like a jerk that there aren't any ads on the current app.

From past discussions on this topic, i'm 99.9% sure evilore will be going the 'ads' route on the mobile version. Basically, you go to neogaf.com on your phone, and it automatically redirects you to the secondapps version, with ads. A lot of us would have rather had an android/app store version for a few bucks of something, that didn't include ads, and then have the web version option with ads.

But I don't think that'll be happening, for a few reasons, one of which being how unappeasable maintaining and updating two/three versions at once, would be. It's too bad, I really rather not have ads on my cramped mobile screen, and instead pay either a dollar per month or a one time purchase from the app store for 3-5 bucks.

Not sure if EviLore can give us insight on which would bring in more revenue, but I can't imagine it would hurt. I still don't think it'll happen, even with support, because it can seem like 'paying to use gaf'...

Unfortunately... :p

If it never comes to fruition, someone could always make a NeoGAF app store app that functions either as a subscription service or an in-app purchase monthly/bimonthly for a dollar or two.

But I don't think anyone here has the time or know-how to make such an app, and not even to mention whether it would be allowed to begin with.

Pretty sure a native app was specifically spoken-out against in the past. A web-app makes more sense, especially since there is already a fully functional version that exists and is multi-platform.

...I just really want to pay for it so I don't have to see ads!

Right, either way i'm with you; I'd just rather not have ads on a mobile version, and i'd be more than happy to pay a monthly dollar or two for that to happen.

We can start discussing it now. I've actually been working on a complete rewrite of the code for the past couple of weeks (which is why I've not been adding/repairing features) but now that you're ready to make this official I'll stop the rewite so we can discuss the changes.

Obviously, adding some mobile friendly ads like we discussed would be the first step. That could be something you set up and just give me the HTML to embed. Simple enough.

The bigger questions are whether to keep the site separate or hosted on neogaf.com. You also mentioned direct DB access but I'm a little on the fence about this idea as it could actually end up making my coding more difficult. Perhaps not.

For everyone one else, here's some ideas I've been considering adding to the new version:
  • Updated UI - I want to keep the same basic design but not make it mimic the iPhone OS entirely. Something more generic while keeping some of the same interface elements
  • Custom CSS - I think it would be neat for users to specify a custom CSS file that they can have loaded in case they want to tweak the design
  • Floating action button - This is tricky but I'm thinking of having a multi-purpose action button that floats along the side as you scroll kinda like what the G-mail mobile app does. No promises on this, though.
  • Multi-quote - I've snooped into how NeoGAF.com is doing multi-quote so it should be no problem to add this feature
  • Better Search - When I add back the search feature, I want to give the same tools that the main site has. Shouldn't be difficult.

Panels please (tablets and big boy phones) I know, I know, far fetched.

Ckohler, those upgrades sound great but one issue with the custom CSS: If the app was to get ads, what's stopping someone from adding 'display:none' to the ads element through the custom CSS file?

Would need it to be on neogaf.com. As for direct db access, I mean, if you're content with using your scraping method then I guess that's not a problem, since the end result is the same. I would just want to have a secure method for login and so forth, so that moderators can use it.

Hosting it there is totally fine by me. Not only would it be more secure, it also solves the cookie issues I have to work around. Also, you'll have full access to the code so you can feel more comfortable knowing that it isn't doing malicious things. Does neogaf.com have PHP5 installed?

People gonna get banned while mods take a dump!

I look forward to the update finally happening. It seems like forever since it was first mentioned that it would happen.
