Steins;Gate coming to PS3

Why are people acting like this is the first time anybody has ever seen the game's title and its fun-loving semicolon?

And seriously, somebody bring this over. It'll totally tank financially, but... wait, I probably shouldn't say that when trying to convince publishers to give it a chance.

Did 999 tank for Aksys?

Steins;Gate might not completely tank. The chance of it being a commercial success is low, but the interest of VN have been rising the last few years, so who knows? Plus, it could just become a Steam title and not worry about pressing disks and talking to retailers.

Since the fan-translation team have announced their recent hiatus, I've become sadden. I really want to play this fucking game!

Maybe this belongs in another thread, but are they just impossible to be profitable here? Has no one (companies such as JAST, etc.) ever tried to pick one up for translation and maybe sell them on PS Store?
I'm being very naive here, aren't I?

I remember hearing PS3 VNs got blocked by SCEA on account of them not being "game enough". Probably BS, but whatever.

999 sold very well IIRC. Better than expected. Think now might be a good time to bring over VNs thanks to that (though how it would do on consoles is still up in the air).

Why it might be viable to simply translate it for the PC, and place it on Steam. Digital distribution might be key to Steins;Gate's success.

SCEA blocked certain PS1 games from being released out here because they didn't have enough 3D graphics, so I'm not surprised if they do that.

I remember hearing that Steam wouldn't allow VNs or something, but that might've been a dream. It definitely would be a good idea and probably a great way to actually get a following. Carpe Fulgur proved there is an audience for this kind of stuff.

Seriously, with 999 and Katawa Shoujo, now is the best time to jump on the VN train ever and Steam would be the perfect medium for it. Someone needs to convince Gabe.

Supposedly there was some murmur about Steam wanting a playable demo or something, but then, it might all have been bullshit . . .

Well they also made Chaos;Head right? I think the semicolon is just a thing with them.
Their next game is called Robotics;Notes.
I remember hearing Steins;Gate would be a nightmare to localize because of the amount of jargon in it. Is that true?
Akihabara and the otaku subculture play a big part in the game. The best approach would probably be to leave that stuff there and add a few notes for the uninitiated. It's not like the game would likely be bought by people who aren't familiar with anime and Japanese nerdery.

Well if this isn't the greatest time for an announcement like this. Chiyomaru of 5pb/mages shat on his fans just a few days ago through a rash of tweets regarding the stealth marketing fiasco that he's definitely part of. Will be interesting to see if this eats into their sales for re-release on the PS3.

This is the wrong game to try and bring over. Maybe if the supposed Kojima/mages/Suda thing works out and turns out to be good, then that. No idea about the anime but 2ch culture is a huge part of the first half of the game, and this will create serious localization issues.

The full 1st chapter is on XBL as a demo, and convinced a lot of us early adopters to buy the game. Shouldn't be difficult to do for PC as well.

The latest update from the group doing the fan translation patch said JAST has contacted them and offered to buy the translation from them. They haven't said that they sold it to them though or if JAST actually plans do an official release.

Edit: My mistake doesn't say they offered to buy anything just that they contacted them.

Can't be. An unedited fan translation for the PC version is already done. It's just going through a second pass before release.

It couldn't be all that hard to switch babble for babble.

I wish this would get a NA release. Steins;Gate is amazing.

Apparently the fan translation project for the PC version have been contacted by Steam and the production company about a possible PC release here?

Great, yet another version of the game I'll never be able to play because of my monolinguism. Thanks Japan!

Robotics;Notes will be simultaneous release on 360 and PS3, for anyone curious.

I'm hoping that gets a PSP release too.

I've got my pre-order down for the PSP version of Hiyoku Renri no Darling so I'm not too excited about this. I don't have a PS3. Then again, I am excited as hopefully the well deserving game will get more sales. It's fantastic. <3

Surprised that they think there's still a market left that hasn't bought S;G at this point after it's been released on so many other platforms already.

Though likely it's all just lip service to corral more users towards the PS3 so that Robotics;Notes won't be so disappointing when it releases.

Well my 360 was stolen along with my copy of the game so I'd like to go through it again at some point. This makes it easier for me since I don't have the money to import another 360 at the moment.

You could just pick up the PC version then. It's probably cheaper, and you wouldn't have to pay extra for the additional content. :p

I already have it but I'd rather have the original high res assets instead of the scaled down PC versions, even the FMVs have more macro-blocking! It's a visual thing but that's the reason I bought the 360 version in the first place.

Are they really separating the DLC on the PS3 version when the platinum and PSP version has it on disk? :p

EDIT: Also no fandisk port on the PC and I haven't played it yet! Bundle will save me some money getting it again with it.

Uh... English speakers? Seems like plenty of market to me.

But it probably won't happen on PS3.

But I would buy so fast upon official English release no matter the platform.

Wait, what?
The PC version is lower res?
WHY

No idea, here is an unscaled screen I just took:

Easily my favourite anime of the last few years, then again, I've been out of anime for a while, but still, great show. Not likely to get in English, but if so, would love to play it in VN form.

Ugh.

So, I decided to look into this more, and the 2ch thread has a summary of the situation.

360 > PSP > iOS > Windows
  • 360: 1280x720, 5.1 surround, achievements
  • PC: 1024x576, 2.1 stereo, pseudo-achievements. Not recommended, due to bugs.
  • PSP: 480x272, 2.0 stereo, has scene-jump-from-backlog function, scenario branch points are displayed in an easy-to-read fashion, new opening & ending sequences, no achievements
  • iOS: Has pseudo-achievements. "Due to a Fruit Organization conspiracy, steam has been added to some scenes."

What? There's bugs in the PC version? First I've heard of em. I planned on playing the PC version since that's the only one that's available in English.
