This is what I've been trying to say. RE4 wasn't a horror game, and everyone loved it. Why? Because it was mood. It wasn't actual horror. It was atmosphere. That's not ruined by having a co-op buddy.

Gotta disagree. Knowing someone's got my back relieves SOME of the tension, not all of it, but a good part. If the enemies were tough as nails, and ammo and health is scant, I might change my mind.

But it's a new age RE tailored for the west so I'm not holding by breath.

RE5 setting left me so bitter.

Acting like there's no difference between the crossbow Ganados in RE4 and the AK-47-wielding Majinis in RE5 is absurd.

The RE4 guys shot projectiles that you could dodge or shoot out of the air. They're pretty much a faster, farther-traveling version of the guys who throw axes at you. You don't need a cover system for that bullshit. Leon shoots that shit out of the air and snipes them in the head for giving him trouble.

The RE5 guys have weapons that are pretty much hitscan-fast and that you're forced to use a terrible cover system to defend against.

If they're *going* to use a cover system, sure, I'd prefer for it not to suck. But acting like it's somehow illogical or hypocritical to complain about the game not going back in the RE4 direction is ridiculous.

My interest in this game just manifested itself for the first time after watching this trailer.

As far as I'm concerned, different types of scenarios for the different characters is great. A change of pace throughout the game if well done could keep the experience feeling fresh.

I'm also really eager to see what they do with the Chinese city scenario. Panic in a metropolis with thousands of civilians is very appealing to me.

Uhhh.... Someone needs to keep an eye on this guy.

Im 99% sure they said it was an optional part, and that the main parts of the game's campaign are single player only. Someone here will chime in...
Actually, no one said anything yet:

Just rewatched the broadcast and no one said anything about the game's single player or co-op system.

Only new thing I can provide that I didn't tweet was the 150+ person dev team size. Other tidbits like "people may not be able to tell what is gameplay and what is a cutscene" go without saying.

(I'm reasonably fluent in Japanese so I wouldn't miss something crucial like this)

You can see the girl around even in Leon's campaign though: (Look in the back left.)

Chris' Troop also follows him across the world:

RE4 also had the big guys with the gatlin'g guns. I'm just saying!

Right, and you'd stun them with grenades and snipe them in the head a few times to take them out. Cover shooting against them would've been boring! They specifically gave the gun spin-up/spin-down times and made him a very slow aimer in order to give you time to fuck him up. All the sequences featuring that dude would've been less fun with a cover system, and fun is what matters, not whether it's "realistic" to be able to take cover.

Fun with my friends > tension.

I will throw tension out of a window if it means my friends can get in on the fun with me.

Just depends on how the game is built. With the way RE4 was built, you have a very valid argument. However I imagine that RE6 will be made to better suit the new gameplay mechanics.

Idd. And it changes the gameplay completely. I don't get how people don't seem to understand this. RE4 plays NOTHING like any other 3rd person shooter out there. If the game makes you cover and shoot enemies that shoot back at you it'll be the same as every 3rd person shooter out there with possibly worse mechanics than its competition. While there is nobody out there that has done the RE4 style gameplay better. The closest is Deadspace but even that plays completely different.

The part where the enemies had guns in RE5 was without a doubt the worst part of the game and it felt like it didn't fit in with the rest of the game. And I really enjoyed RE5.

If they must have co-op, please just make it hurt the sp. I hate co-op and won't be playing it that way, so please make the aI at least competent.

Honestly, I don't really care if they add the cover system and stuff. Make changes.

Capcom already proved that they no longer have the talent to recreate RE4's gameplay and make it equally fun. The action stuff made the series more approachable to a wider audience, and considering how high budget these games are, I'm fine with them sliding further in that direction, as long as they can hold on to some kind of desperate tension in the gameplay that keeps it exciting.

I don't think cover-based gameplay against people with guns necessarily fits into that, but I'm open to it.

I'd submit that any game with co-op can be fun with friends. Even a terrible game will give us some entertainment and RE5 is far from that. It's a great co-op game if anything.

Well there must be a billion other games you can play then? No need for every single game out there to become a multiplayer experience if it affects the quality of the product.

This is why having a separate side campaign for co-op is the best solution. That way people like you can play that, and people like me can play the single-player campaign.

Honestly, play the Revelations demo if you could get a hold of a 3DS. Shit is immaculate.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like they're going down that same route with RE6.

Considering that RE5 sold considerably more copies, I'm sure most people outside of forums would disagree with you.

RE 4 sold 5.7 million copies on the PS2, Wii and GC. RE 5 sold 5.6 million copies on the 360 and PS3.

If you have more up to date statistics that include PC sales of RE 5 and sales of RE 4 HD than what Capcom provides on their website, please link to them so we can see how considerable the difference really is.

Don't forget the regenerators. Those dudes in the lab scared the shit outta me.

Regardless of sales, the idea that GAF hates RE5 is certainly nothing in the way of evidence for what the public thinks. GTA4 is often cited as loathsome on GAF, I've yet to meet anyone in real life who didn't love it.

I feel something worthy of keeping in mind with Resident Evil 5's sales is that from Capcom's perspective, most of them happened up front with four million being shipped in March and another million being shipped by June 1st, while RE4 sold most of its copies over a lot of re-releases and price cuts.

That's true, but RE 4 really suffered from originally being released as an exclusive on the least popular system that generation. And the PS2 re-release is the best seller out of the three versions and it was sold as a full priced game, unlike the Wii version.

most people who hate on RE5 never played it and I don't bother arguing with them about it. if you played it and hated it, fine fine.

I played 1-5, Veronica, and Zero. I didn't like 5 as much as most of them.

I'm still not sure why. I think part of it had to do with what they did to Chris, he's not supposed to have biceps that are bigger than his head. Its a silly complaint, but it messed with my head the whole way through.

Other than that I think I just didn't like how fast paced the game was compared to the rest of them, it felt more like a normal action game to me.

Edit: But co-op was fun, don't get me wrong. The game still had a lot to offer.

If this is set before RE5, I'm not really sure how excited I can be.

I mean they really kind of chain themselves up when they do stuff like this.

Going to make a guess here and say that Leon's scenario takes place before RE5 with Chris and new guy's scenarios happening concurrently a few years later.

i'm down with this. Or Chris' story takes place after RE5 as well. Who knows how they'll work out the timeline in this game.

Capcom said RE5 was the fastest selling entry. You can argue it's because of the platform choices, or the marketing, or the word of mouth, or the reviews or whatever, what matters is the result.

Nothing in the 'horror' genre is even comparable in sales this generation. Capcom shouldn't make a game like RE1, because it would not sell as well. And if someone wants to argue the previous entry dictates the performance of the next, then even if they did make it like RE1, if you believe RE5 was disliked, you'd also logically believe an RE1-ish RE6 would sell poorly based on RE5's reception.
