You're referring to just the visuals, I hope? Because otherwise that first sentence is really bad... but even so, seriously, that doesn't make any sense, no. If you think Angel Beats looks fine you haven't watched much anime? What? That's kind of absurd.

I was referring to the show overall, not the appearance.
I pretty much strung two thoughts together as usual.

Shit I need to go out and get food before the tornadoes move into the area.

It's pretty unfortunate that a bunch of people here need to keep up their Key hate, I know I've said it many times before but it's so undeserved... and for Angel Beats in specific, the art and visuals were just fine. One shot you have some problems with certainly is not representative of the show as a whole.

My "key hate" is just a quick moniker for the fact that I really don't like how they write their stories at all, that's it. They have their fans, if they like that sort of thing, whatever.

However, for Angel beats specifically, I think it's just straight up bad, KEY associations notwithstanding. I'm not sure how much of it is Maeda's fault and how much is PA Works, but everyone dropped the ball there.

Should I be looking more in depth at some of the things in Oniisama E?

The books that are being read
The music that is being played
The stuff in french that I don't understand

???

So you don't hate it because its KEY, you hate it because its badly written because its KEY.

So, I tried watching the first episode of Panty and Stocking, and I guess couldn't get into it.

I'd say it gets better (which it does) and that it gets worse (which it does) - what I'm trying to say is that it's inconsistent overall, but I found the first episode to be one of the worst.

The store in the mall here has the same exact anime DVDs that it had 5 years ago. It is just sitting on stock that it will likely never sell.
Is anybody looking for specific DVD volumes or series in here? I will look for it for you.

I actually think NTHT is pretty great, but obviously it's not for some people. YMMV.
I concur, except without the 'YMMV' part, or else I'd be adding that to a rider for all my posts.
If the central conflict wasn't taken from Matrix Reloaded and slapped in so incongruously, maybe I'd agree too, but sorry, I hated this show. It's not a good thing when Shu's wasteful, aggressive style of kendo serves as a metaphor for the show itself. :p

There are some contrivances to make things as tragic as possible, but I didn't watch it with the most critical eye. The show is supposed to tear you apart, not the other way around!
Well, I win this matchup. Maybe the show should tier whore some more.

I say the Matrix because it's an easy point of reference for a conflict where the protagonist and antagonist aren't bound by rules, reason, or physics. :p

Twilight of the Cockroaches

First things first: those hacks at Dreamworks and Pixar totally ripped this off for Antz and A Bug's Life. Although it basically feels like a Don Bluth movie.
Oh, you did not just go there.

Where does physics have anything to do with this?
The show involves a girl with magical powers. Its not realistic to begin with.
But those magical powers adhere to a set of internal rules. That's OK! Fiction authors are perfectly free to define their own physics and laws of the universe, whether that allows for extreme stunts, magic, warp drives, time travel, or whatever. It's when they make it clear they don't even give a fuck about their own rules that me as a viewer becomes disinterested in the story. Why should I care when Shu gets beaten when he's just going to hack the matrix anyway?

In other words, you can ask an audience to believe the impossible, but not the improbable.

I'm actually trying to think of the worst anime I've ever seen now. I can certainly say the ones I've enjoyed the least of what I've watched (Hanaukyou Maid Tai La Verité and Blassreiter). Then there are the truly terrible anime that are just inept in almost every way (Kissdum, Saint Beast, Musashi Gun-doh). None of these are my most hated anime, though.

That honour goes to Kannazuki no Miko, with its magical combination of shit-tastic characterisation and
romanticised lesbian flute rape

The Light of El Cantare
Soukyuu no Fafner: Right of Left:

Xebec's other mecha about protecting a beachside community! Dynedom recommended that I watch the prequel OVA first before marathoning the series, so I did.

It was the basic shell of a mecha series condensed into 50 minutes. The entirety of what occurred could have probably been explained by a five minute flashback in the actual series, but apparently this prequel was produced after the series. This makes its purpose slightly mystifying as a lot of it felt like it could be reused infodump from the series, so it doesn't exactly expand on the Fafner universe save for
all the characters they introduce, then immediately kill off.
Maybe the main draw was the (pretty standard) mecha action?

The theme of the OVA:
coming back alive, or more accurately, completely failing to do so. Even the freaking dog died.
I mean, the second that it was revealed that
the kids turn to crystal from using the Fafners too much there was no way that the end result would be anything other than tragic, but I was at least pulling for Ryou. He got a decent amount of characterization and I liked the idea of a protagonist who battled disease in his everyday life and found piloting a mech to be freedom rather than a burden, but it wasn't meant to be. Looks like the actual series will feature long hair guy and glasses girl.

With this, I'm ready to marathon Soukyuu no Fafner. Crazy Hirai faces and tons of angst, here I come!

The FYE in my mall is like that. Hilariously high prices and tons of stuff from when the Suncoast in the mall went out.

I've had some rare volumes driving me up the wall trying to find them, but I'm trying to slow down the anime purchasing.

In other words, you can ask an audience to believe the impossible, but not the improbable.

Even if I don't share your perspective on NTHT, this is reasonable and understandable. The strangest and most mundane things can break my suspension of disbelief in series with even very outlandish premises.

Lupin III 5

KZU7W.jpg

This show is so silly and implausible (
the villain has a handy hot-air balloon inflated and ready to leap into when he's caught by surprise, the driver of a car on a crowded highway leaps out onto the top of a neighboring car with no apparent effect on the surrounding traffic
), but when it's as cool and stylish as these poses, who cares?

There's a harsher edge and a more explicit sexual component to the show so far than Cagliostro, my only previous exposure to the franchise. It's interesting to see what things were like before Miyazaki got his hands on Lupin.

You'll need an umbrella of smiles with you!

(aka the first half of the series has absolutely terrible writing, and it's only redeemed when they apparently fired the scriptwriter and replaced him with the guy who originally came up with the idea)

I like a good redemption story. Even when it's the plot itself and not the characters!

Actually, I really rather like the second half of Fafner

Heh. Will have to disagree as I rather enjoyed NTHT.

I still have a hard time comprehending how people can be so critical of the shows they watch. My mind must be wired differently.

The Light of El Cantare
Fafner 01:

Your standard mecha first episode.
RIP to the brave fighter pilots who died needlessly in order to underscore how the Fafner is the only thing that can defeat the Festus. Without your sacrifice, we could never have realized what was already plainly obvious.

Also, Maya is apparently incapable of feeling guilt.
An entire family is vaporized in front of her eyes because she won't go in the shelter and she can barely act shocked? I guess that's life on You-Could-Die-At-Any-Moment Island.

I eagerly anticipate the show's purported decent into terribleness and subsequent rise to not-as-terribleness.

Some people here just look for things to complain about. Not saying Hito is one of them, but I don't know if he really went in it with the right mind >_>

Same.
I just kind of set aside nitpicks and just accept the story.
If i dont like something it is usually because of the characters.

If you have ever found an episode weaker to its best episodes or a lame arc in an otherwise good series, it's the same thing. It's not about being too critical at all.

I don't think that's necessarily relevant to this case, because there are critical people who both like and dislike it.

As far as Shu goes, I never had a problem with it because the show established in the first episode that his stick was kind of amazing.

This got pretty damn mono no aware for a bit towards the end of the ep. Mugi feeding the monkeys was pretty damn cute.

For me, it's a tie between Eiken and Mars of Destruction. I doubt that stuff like Yami to Boushi or Kannazuki no Miko can be anywhere near as bad but I guess there's only one way to find out!

So, Haibane Renmei. Definitely a lot more of an eccentric series than I thought it would be. I liked it for what it was but didn't see it as anything extraordinary, though I will admit the final episode was far and away the best, and definitely improved my overall opinion about the whole show. And I already mentioned the wonderful Kow Otani soundtrack.

Of course they weren't going to definitively reveal anything about the world, but the story is about the characters first and foremost, so you can excuse it based on that. Still stings a bit though.

I loved that they kept the focus on the characters.

I also think that there were enough hints to infer many things about the world even if never said outright

I really would love to see ABe revisit the world with a new cast, even if it was a bit ambiguous it was one of the best realized anime worlds I've ever seen.

Brave 10 ep 3

Isanami makes this anime hard to watch. She is so annoying. The most interesting characters get so little screentime (Sasuke) and the hilarious antagonist, lemme guess wont return. I wish he was one of the ten. Saizo has good personality, so Ill keep watching.

Brave 10 3 SAIZO~! 3
Mediocre episode. A lot of talking, the action was kinda dull, they weren't really being ninjas. That was some ear rapage when Saizo fell down.

I guess not every Sengoku period show can be as awesome as Basara.

What's his/her face might return. He is shown in the opening and the ending which I assume is showcasing the Brave 10, though I never bothered counting them to see if that's actually a case or they are showing literally every character in the anime there.
