I haven't watched any series in awhile, and just wanting to know whats out there in this particular genre. Some of the series I've seen and loved are:

Escaflowne
Tears of Tiara
Record of Lodoss War (my favorite anime, anything that closely resembles this would be awesome)
Scrapped Princess
Guin Saga
The Slayers
.hack//signs
Beserk

Third Rune Soldier Louie. It's not 'epic fantasy' but kind of a mix of light-hearted and serious anime.

Mahoujin Guruguru is a parody of sword-and-sorcery RPGs in a cartoony style.

El Hazard also counts.

Not a lot - it's a Western fantasy trope rather than a Japanese one, after all.

Record of Lodoss War (my favorite anime, anything that closely resembles this would be awesome)

Have you watched both the OVA and the TV series?

Other possible suggestions (I don't know if half of these are any good, mind you)

Dog Days
Orphen
Magic Knights Rayearth (thumbs up on this one - take Escaflowne, make it more magical girl-y)
Arslan
Twelve Kingdoms (this is ACE, and has swords and sorcery in it, but it's probably not what you're looking for)

The Tales of Phantasia OVA is pretty good.
Ruin Explorers is a cure little OVA too.
The Twelve Kingdoms could also qualify, I'd put it in the high fantasy category, although it's not a western medieval world. It's an amazing series btw.

Not sure what else... Maybe Sorcerer Hunters or Those who Hunt Elves?
Haven't seen them, but maybe someone here can tell you something more about them.

You're honestly better off reading a novel from many of the celebrated fantasy authors around the globe.

Anime has a distinct lack of integral design when it comes to swords and sorcery motifs.

Sorcerer Hunters is more action-oriented with a group of mages hunting down mages who abuse their power. Those Who Hunt Elves is more of a comedy with a perverted premise (a spell broke and attached itself in pieces to various female elves around the world, so the protagonists need to inspect a lot of unwilling naked female elves).

I rather enjoyed Petite Princess Yucie. It a Gainax anime loosely based on the Princess Maker videogames. A little girl in a fantasy world takes lessons and does odd jobs and makes friends/rivals and generally struggles to grow and attain the magical title of Millennium Princess.

Edit: Also, confirming the suggestion for Rune Soldier Louie.

And Record of Lodoss War has a couple of sequels, but the only good one is Chronicles of the Heroic Knight.

Whoa. Bunch of people liking Rune Soldier Louie. I might have to check that out. Though reading the wiki, it seems to have a lot of females in the main cast. I guess Louie is the only male?

Its not a girly anime is it?

The protagonist is a mage who's no good at spells and would rather use his wand like a club, and he gets stuck in a party with a couple of girls who hate him because he's a loser.

Edit: Oh and, it's made by the guy who made Lodoss War.

Oh yeah, KyoAni's Munto "franchise" has a really good fantasy setting (mixed with a real life setting).

Too bad it's a jumbled mess.
First there were the two OVAs, which were nice.
Then came the TV series which should have been the sequel.
But the TV series' first six episodes consisted of nothing but the OVA material. No new animation, nothing. Just the two OVAs, split up into six episodes.
The rest of the series was supposed to continue from the OVAs, and give a conclusion.
Only the rest of the series was three episodes long and could have been just another OVA, but no, they had to make an unnecessary TV series out of it.
And then they promised a movie, which would be the real conclusion.
But the movie was just those final three episodes, joined together with no new material, and maybe slightly better animation. Oh, and they cut out a part of the ending which promised the story isn't over yet.
So, yeah, they really made a mess out of this one, which is a shame, because it has some cool ideas, great animation, and a surprisingly good setting.

I still think it's worth a watch, for the setting and the animation alone, watching the OVAs and then the movie is probably the way to go.

If you can accept a story in a far eastern fantasy setting I can recommend "Guardian of the sacred spirit"

Rune Soldier Louie

...looks like a harem anime.

Guardian of the Sacred Spirit's excellent, but not something I'd really classify as a sword and sorcery series as it's pretty grounded. Regardless, check it out, mature drama and lovely action choreography, done by Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex).

it's not really, it's pretty much the exact opposite, the 3 girls are a team of adventurers and they dont want him on their team, they just couldnt get a female mage so they ended up stuck with him. It's awesome and I'm really happy people seem to be watching it. It was my "if you could recommend one anime for people to watch" anime

Gokudu-kun Manyuuki is more kiddy but it's pretty funny too
Utawarerumono is pretty good too, if you like Tears to Tiara you should like that
Claymore was fairly decent too, slightly Berserk-ish in parts

Only thing I can think of that is worth watching and hasn't already been mentioned is Tower of Druaga. It's based off an ancient arcade game but they managed to make a passable series out of it.
