Internment Camps: The biggest screw up of American "Justice ?"

Lets play hypotheticals for a second. What would happen if Iran developed a nuclear bomb fired the bomb at New York City?

How would arab and "arab-like" Americans be treated?

I don't think Arabs consider people from Iran as their own, religious and language differences and all.

Lol, I could have deduced this guy wasn't Japanese the first day he posted on here. He was trying way too hard.

I'm not going to go to any extreme to prove anything, especially just for GAF. I would be open to some questions though ... But there you have it. Take it as you will, Vultures !

日本語で説明しないと信じられないね。。。OPがなぜ日本人のふりしてるか理解してないでござあああるw。

To be clear I am Japanese, but my family was not affected. We moved to America in 2011.

Ok, so if every American Citizen is guaranteed the right to a fair trial and like have to be proven guilty to be locked up and all that, Why was America allowed to round up a whole race of people and throw them in a camp ?

Not to mention all the abuse that happened in these camps ... And yes, I am aware that Bill Clinton tried to throw money at the families effected.

So GAF, enlighten me, and discuss things about Internment camps. Do you think it could happen again ? Why were the Japanese denied trials ? Etc ...

As Clinton himself said, it was "wartime hysteria". Which likely had something to do with Japanese Navy bombing Pearl Harbor and killing 2,400 Americans after lying to the US government for months about being interested in peace negotiations with the United States, effectively bringing us into a war we wanted nothing to do with.

That alone doesn't make it right in any way obviously, but it was a different time, and our government became pretty paranoid (see: The Red Scare ten years later). And after being essentially stabbed in the back by the Japanese government, the motto became "trust no one". This unfortunately carried over to the Japanese civilians of the US, even the kids who pledged allegiance to the US flag every day at school. It was a seriously fucked up thing to do, but again, the idea that any citizen of Japanese decent could be a spy seemed very real to a lot of people back then, as ludicrous at that seems now.

Also, in addition to the reparations you mentioned, Clinton did issue a a formal apology on behalf of the US government in addition to the reparations. He didn't just "throw money at them" and forget about it.

Over fifty years ago, the United States Government unjustly interned, evacuated, or relocated you and many other Japanese Americans. Today, on behalf of your fellow Americans, I offer a sincere apology to you for the actions that unfairly denied Japanese Americans and their families fundamental liberties during World War II.

In passing the Civil Liberties Act of 1988, we acknowledge the wrongs of the past and offered redress to those who endured such grave injustice. In retrospect, we understand that the nation's actions were rooted deeply in racial prejudice, wartime hysteria, and a lack of political leadership. We must learn from the past and dedicated ourselves as a nation to renewing the spirit of equality and our love of freedom. Together, we can guarantee a future with liberty and justice for all. You and your family have my best wishes for the future.

Bill Clinton

Suddenly it has turned into a "this race had it worse" topic.

Can some legal dude from GAF just answer my questions ? I know there are legal peoples on GAF so ...

You shouldn't be surprised that when you use the words "biggest screw up" and "American justice" together, that you would find some contention. Why, just around that time, the United States killed hundreds of thousands with their atomic bombs and later granted immunity to certain Japanese war criminals for their atrocities.

Yeah, it's weird that the OP would call himself native Japanese and decry the internment of Japanese-Americans in WWII as the "biggest screw up of American Justice".

It'd seem like actual native Japanese would reserve that title for the atomic bombings, post-war occupation or something that actually involved America and actual Japanese citizens. Seems like the Japanese themselves didn't really care all that much about the Japanese-Americans anyways, most of whom considered themselves fully American.

It's either internment camps or concentration camps. The lesser of two evils, sadly.

Not the biggest screw up, that would have to be held by the treatment of indigineous americans, or the slavery trade, but it is certainly up there.

Edit: Wow, missed detectiveGAF. LOL

True enough but some people are taking it personally, which is also hilarious.

I guess I shouldn't complain because it's laughs all around

A+ thread. Would read again.

Just come out and admit that you were lying. No shame in wanting to be someone else. I always wish I was batman.

Do you think Arkham City was the biggest screw up in Gotham "justice?" Just to be clear, I am Batman, but I didn't become Batman until this year so I wasn't affected by it

You guys just shot yourselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about Japanese culture (AngelSoldier's an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is in America where you can become successful by being an asshole. If you screw a Japanese, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is that AngelSoldier, after hearing about this, is not going to want to post in this thread any further, nor will they post in GAF anymore. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but GAF has alienated AngelSoldier with this move.

GAF, publicly apologize to AngelSoldier or you can kiss your business goodbye.

No it hasn't, you're the misinformed person who wrongly labeled the Japanese internment camps the "biggest screw up of American 'Justice' ". And I am a "legal dude" correcting your ignorance.

No, the internment camps, while tragic were not the biggest mistake in American justice. Why?

Well, first of all, although the rights of habeas corpus were suspended, Japanese-Americans were still allowed to bring their cases to court. The three major cases being Yasui, Hirabayashi, ex parte Endo and Korematsu. Korematsu upheld the legality of the interment and Endo accepted the petition for writ of habeas corpus and ruled that the War Relocation Board had no authority to intern citizens whose loyalty had no reason to be suspect.

Coram noblis later vacated the convictions of Korematsu and Hirabayashi.

The fact that Japanese-Americans had the opportunity to address their grievances through legal means, put them ahead of many other tragedies.

Secondly, they were allowed to and successfully petitioned the government for redress and reparations.

Point of note.

Reagan is the one that formally apologized for the internment of Japanese-Americans, and signed the Civil Rights act 0f 1988 which was to address the issues of reparations.

Subsequently, Bush allocated an additional $400 million dollars for reparation, totalling 1.6 billion dollars.

Final disbursement of all funds occurred in 1999, under Clinton.

Legal dude and holder of a BA in Asian-American studies. (I was very disappointed in this degree as it did not, according to my assumptions, allow me to to a tag, track and or place Asian-Americans in terrariums for observation or the wild.)

Man, I need to go home and transfer a videotape to Youtube. When I was an Asian-American studies TA, I took my kids on a field trip to Granada, CO to an internment camp, where we were taken around by some of the former residents.

I had a handful of anime fan in my class. I thought they were OK kids. But didn't know how weird they were until they started speaking bad Japanese at the damn camp. So embarrassing.

We called him out for lying about his/her person on the Internet.

The Internet does not forgive

It's either internment camps or concentration camps. The lesser of two evils, sadly.

Actually they were called concentration camps in a lot of official documents up until after we found out what the Nazi concentration camps were like and we switched to internment camp in order to avoid the new connotations the word 'concentration camp' had gained.

I took an entire class on Japanese-American interment. As my professor put it it's "one of the darkest stains in American history". The big issue, as many people pointed out, was that many second-generation Japanese-Americans who were citizens of the United States, as they were born here, were held against their will.

Also Japanese-Canadian interment was generally considered to be even worse, though it was on a smaller scale.

oh yeah and here

that icon underneath his username means he's "currently online" - looks like he logged into that account to find a way to delete/edit the post blah blah case closed

summary: someone lied harmlessly on the internet, world shatters

DetectiveGAF is all powerful. They always demand respect, because they'll find out no matter how small or large the lie is. I would know! The Jbaird situation and the situation where they found that one GAFer lying about his dalliance with the girl next door over some pic he had on photobucket, my situation... dudes are righteous.

Anyway, since all we have is our word in these discussions we have, lying isn't really harmless. People should admit when they lie and own up to it, because then they can re-build that trust and be valuable in discussion again.

Which is what the OP didn't do.

He continues to hold on to this charade building a negative reputation consisting of "pathetic," "weak," "stupid," and the like.

Now he will be ridiculed on GAF for a good amount of time.

oh i know. I don't fully want to throw him under the bus yet though... his Cisco explanation was really convincingly detailed. But on the other hand, it's hard to deny something is fishy

Nobody ever remembers me outing a guy pretending to be a girl in a thread welcoming junior members. :(
