I tuned in mid-song the first time this chick was on earlier and I honestly thought it was a skit for a moment. Is she one of those artists where being unable (or unwilling?) to carry a note is supposed to be cute or endearing? Because damn, this is just terrible.

Morbidly curious to hear the album version of these.

She sounds good on recordings, just not good live.

They're not always the funniest but the final sketches lately almost always seem to be the most interesting. If this wasn't so damn long it would be pretty strong.

Edit: Wait, a commercial this late? weird

I'm amazed if that's the case.

Have you heard any of her music before? When she's just singing and not trying some of the weird variations she did tonight, she's quite good IMO.

She has been hit or miss with live performances though, and it's mostly because of her nerves.

She's actually a pretty good singer. She just has no stage presence and has ridiculous nerves.

She really should have gotten some training for this.

Yes. I've seen videos of her live performances as well.

The second performance was what I saw, and I can't imagine the first one being considerably worse than it.

Daniel Radcliffe did pretty well. Last couple of sketches weren't so good, but he held his own.

Really interested in listening to Lana Del Rey's music now. I've been curious about her since I keep hearing people talk about her.

SNL continues the tradition of "Turn it off after Weekend Update."

No way. "The Jay Pharoah Show" was one of the best of the night.
Got exactly from the musical guest what I was expecting though: okay singing without engaging with the audience/tv audience at all.

Jay Pharaoh was awesome. I took the sketch as saying that that's all they've let him do so far and all that most people want to see from him. That being so boring is him saying "let me do more."

I've got to tune in for this trainwreck then.

It really wasn't THAT bad. She was nervous as many have said so the songs were a little all over the place but at least it was a live performance which is more than I can say for some artists who have come on the show.

Bingo. That's what I thought as well.

It took an SNL skit to tell America this guy offers nothing beyond Denzel, Will Smith, and Chris Rock impressions.

You should see his stuff on Youtube.

He does good impressions of a whole lot of celebs (of various races).

And it's a crime that they aren't using him to play Obama considering he's 100x better than Armisen's impression.

Yea, that must be it. It was just a brilliant meta-comedy skit poking fun at his lack of screen time by referencing everything he's done previously.

All the successful SNL alumni have said they had to write their own skits to get air time and break out. If he wants to get more screen time, he needs to stop trotting out the same three stale-ass impressions.
...Maybe he wrote that skit?
He has other impressions. A shitton more. A lot of really great ones.
It's possible he wanted to poke fun at that being his only presence on the show, and did, and now he'll keep writing other sketches. Who knows.

He does way more than just 3 people.

Like I said previously, he can do Obama well (way better than Armisen) but for some reason they aren't letting him do it.

To be honest, it's almost a repeat of what Chris Rock went through when he was on SNL (at least that's the way it seems to me).

I'm aware of the impressions he's done outside of SNL. I was talking about the 3 impressions he's done on SNL (and did on tonight's skit).

Maybe those are the only 3 impressions that they let him do since the ''typical SNL audience" can relate to them the most?

Maybe he can't do Obama because Fred Armisen has higher priority since he's a full cast member and not a "featured player". I don't know.

Not to make a bigger deal about it than it actually is but I wouldn't be surprised if race plays a part in it as well. Outside of those 3 impressions, the only other thing I've seen him do on the show is play a criminal in prison or a bum (sometimes alongside Kenan).

I envision, if Obama wins reelection, they'll have fun with it and do a switch between Armisen and Pharoah on camera.

That's how I took it. A kind of meta-statement on the role he has in the show thus far.
I mean the episode where he played Victor Frankenstein (Nicki Minaj was musical guest) he was absolutely hilarious. The skits where he's not doing an impression are usually much better than his impressions - though his Denzel doing Random Job X tends to be really good.

That was the most incoherent episode I've seen in a long time.

Sweet Jesus, Lana Del Ray is so awful. That is the most forced, contrived music I have maybe ever heard. Wow.

I just had a realization.
If Matt Smith ever hosts an SNL episode, then the world can freely end.
It would be GODLIKE.

All we need is for Matt to star in a big Hollywood film, it would be perfect.
I know the BBC has been trying their hardest to make Doctor Who more popular in North America (outside of nerds). I don't know how successful they've been.

Also, is Daniel Radcliffe not a very good actor / performer?

I remember reading that he sucked in How to Succeed in Business, and in every skit last night he completely fell flat. It's like he doesn't have any nuance to his delivery other than loud, straight-forward emoting towards the audience. I don't know...

Excluding a few moments, this was another mediocre episode. Also, was there anything good at the end of the Charles Barkley episode? Something ran late which caused SNL to start a half hour late and you can guess the rest. The DVR stopped around the start of that porn awards skit.

I wish they'd stop having musical performances. They are beyond boring. Actually, no show should have musical performances.

It really depends on the performer. Felt like they gave Lana Del Ray a second one simply out of sympathy after her first one, but other performers have been excellent.

This episode has been really good, liked the Newt sketch and Tatum nailed Matthew McConaughey, the NBC one went on a few mins too long but was good. Better episode so far than I expected it to be

Looked up Karmin out of curiosity after seeing next week's guests.

I'm extremely entertained by their music.
