Ultra Bomba: Major Australian Retailers Dropping Vita

Given your avatar, and the fact 999's sequel is on Vita, I'd think you wouldn't want this to bomb as Vita is region-free, where as the other platform for 999's sequel isn't.
As someone who also likes 999, I think the Vita will bomb here in Australia. I don't want it to bomb since I prefer the Sony consoles but it will sadly. No hype, no marketing and a high price is not a good combo.

So apparently now anyone posting that they think hardware isn't going to perform well based on evidence actively wants that hardware to fail.

All signs point to bomb!

But I want it to do well so there'll be a bunch of good games when I eventually pick up an import system for cheap. :(

Again that's off contract, and not locked to any provider, something that as far as I know, isn't even available in the US.

99% of people here get the phone bundled with a 24 month contract, and they pay for the phone over those 24 months at a rate of like $10 a month, so around $240 total.

Best comparison is between unsubsidized phones. In the US, 16GB unsubsidized iphone 4s is $650.

To be honest, while Target, K-Mart and Big W are big department stores, they're rarely used as a means to purchase video games now, especially in the face of retailers such as GAME, EB Games, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman and the wider Online-o-sphere. My local K-Mart in Westfield West Lakes hasn't stocked a new PC game in years, and stocks only a random allotment of the latest console games.

If Vita bombs in Australia, it won't be because these three retailers are not stocking it....

If those bad news keep coming, I'll have to restrain myself a little, because when the Ambassador program comes around, I don't want to be stuck with poor choices because I already bought the best games on launch ;)

Thinks mods influence posters politics. Promoted to QAnon Editor.
Someone will sell it and get the sales, free market.

People who shop at Target and Big W in Oz generally are not people who drop 350 bucks on a dedicated game handheld.

The more pervasive issue is JB Hi FI not carrying the 3G SKU.

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
The preorder bonus was for preorders up until end of December if I remember right. They definitely had an order by date.

Well I know it's not Aussie, but when I went into JB in Auckland last week to pre order I asked about the pre order pack and he said it's valid until they run out of stock, and they still had allocated stock.

As for these 3 main chains in Aussie not stocking, perhaps there is more to it than we realise. What if Sony had minimum allocation per store and those sotres didn't want that amount/value of stock on their shelves?

Reading this thread, and seeing the amount of money Vita costs in other regions is insane :lol

I lived in New Zealand in 2000, and the PS2 launched at NZ $999 which was roughly US $450 at the exchange rate back then. A nice fat 50% markup.

I didn't move to America for cheaper videogames, but it's definitely been a big bonus.

How many console units are typically sold in Australia?

Also I don't get why Australians complain about things being more expensive than other in countries, isn't the minimum wage $15 per hour and income tax 21% up to like 80k, it seems like everything is correctly priced in accordance with the average standard of living. Is there something else I should know about, before I move there :p

This is a ridiculously misleading and poorly worded thread title. Not initially stocking/issues with Sony doesn't equal "dropping". Mod should fix lest we shit-slide into N4G levels of sensationalism.

I have never heard an Austrian complain about that, ever. I don't think I've ever even met an Austrian.

You're right, though, about our minimum wages driving up the cost of stuff. It, combined with a big empty country and a strong AUD is destroying our retail sector and there isn't much to be done about it. Aussies love to complain about the higher cost of living here, but we do forget that the middle and working class here are a lot better off than in the US. We historically compare reasonably with European prices (when the Euro and GBP aren't in the crapper that is), for instance, as opposed to the economically Dickensian 3rd world mockery of a 1st world country that is the USA.

Also, what do income taxes have to do with prices?

Not stocking means not stocking, no matter how you try to spin it. The Kmart tweet specifically says they aren't stocking it because it's too expensive.

You can call that whatever you want. If you think "not initially stocking" is more accurate, then fine...by the sound of things they won't be "initially stocking" it until a price drop, which could take ages.

LOL my spell checker fucked me over. They have nothing to do with prices but they do effect the amount of disposable income, thought there may have been another form of tax that I was missing besides that applied to income.

The 24-inch 3D screen will go on sale in Australia from November 3 for $699.95 exclusive to Harvey Norman as a test of local market demand.

That's why I bring it up, it hasn't been released in Aus yet and disappeared without a mention.

b-b-b-but thats what got me to click on this topic!

"Some Aussie store doesnt have vitas at launch!" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

If you're referring to me that's not what I said at all... The dude I quoted was laughing at the fact it'll do poorly, which came off as a bit odd given his interests should be in it succeeding.

You mean Aussie Stores... as in three very significant retailers.

sorry but my point has less to do with the number of stores and more to do with the approach of this topic.

Lesson of the thread: small regions matter even less than originally thought, only US/JP/EU news should be discussed.

Lesson of thread: people don't look at the point as long as they find something to argue. Here it is again for you:
