Oh, Say Can You Rock?

There's trouble in a far off nation,

Time to get in love formation,

Your love is more deadly than Sadam,

That's Why I gotta drop da bomb!

Yvan Eht Nioj,

Yvan Eht Nioj,

Yvan Eht Nioj,

Yvan Eht Nioj!

Sucks for you Aussies, I guess. At least the European Amazons use lube to make up for the €/$ difference.

Sony are giving away 800 PS Vitas to randomly chosen people buying tickets through the site for Australian cinema chain Event Cinemas.

I would say that rules out supply issues, but can anyone explain how this gels with their strategy to initially target the device exclusively to hardcore gamers?

It doesn't, because that isn't their strategy!

In this day and age - particularly after the mainstream success of the Wii and DS - any hardware manufacturer's strategy is surely "get the product in as many places as possible and sell it". Sony are in no position to pick and choose their customers and anything from them that claims they can is PR nonsense.

Yes, I jest.
800 is a rather huge number to give away in a competition. They could give out at least a few to a good deal of K-Mart, Target and Big W stores instead, and then they'd at least have floorspace in the mainstream department stores. That's pretty important to mindshare.

If stores don't stock Vita it's because they don't want it, not because Sony don't want to give it to them.

ok then. I honestly had no "agenda" and have been posting here since '08 with whatever my opinion was regardless of what studio was owned by whatever publisher that developed games for whatever platform. But I don't expect you to believe that.

don't worry, he behaves like that, he accuses people that happen not to share his 'unbiased' opinion to be trolls, sony workers etc...

That doesn't dispose anything. Rather, it supports the idea that it's not a stock issue and that rather Sony's earlier statement was spin covering the fact that three big retailers don't want their system.

I know, actually I wanted to put iraqipropagandaminister.jpg behind it, but was too lazy.

Nah, here is the real situation.

Customer walks around electronics section and sees no Vita.
Customer goes home still unaware that Vita exists.
Vita's price is too high for such customer anyway. Most of gamers do know that Vita exist and the ones who want to get it will get it no matter what.

I fine it interesting Sony is not doing and strong-arm tactics here. Don't want PSVita, sure thing, good luck getting PS3s and exclusive deals in the future.

I'm sure if that was the case with Microsoft they would've send Ninja squad on the first day.

WHOA. No Walmart, Target or K-Mart distributers? This thing is nearing N-Gage levels of woe and worry with that kind of news.

I will never buy Vita because I'm not interested in Sony handhelds anymore, but here's the thing: I was already tired of half-empty glasses, but after the 3DS launch this shit reached new levels of shittiness.

Bawww baww the 3DS is bomba, Failtendo will fail, popcorn.gif
Price drop + Mario Kart = shit happens
The 3DS is the new hit

Bawww bawww Vita is full of fail, oh god Sony why are you so bad popcorn.gif
Wait until a Price drop + Monster Hunter in Japan and look at the inevitable new hit.

It's like the DS launch all over again, where people were rooting for PSP and throwing shit at the DS because it was the cool thing to do.

But here's the thing: we are talking about Nintendo and Sony.
In Japan.
They will both sell. A LOT.

Also, i understand this is about retailers, not crazy journalism, but it's the same thing.
These retailers will eventually start selling the freaking console.

Sony are in a much worse position than Nintendo ever was and there's some pretty tough competition out there. It's great that you think they'll do fine. I hope they will, but I'm not confident they will be.

I disagree, they were in a much worse position in the days of the GBA/DS and trying to enter the hand held market from nothing with the PSP. They did well in that adventure and learnt some hard lessons. I think they will do even better this time.

I don't agree with that at all, third-parties considered Sony near invincible back in 2004 and had decent support for PSP to start with. Vita is getting less support than PSP was.

Let's wait for new games to be released before saying BOMBA shall we? All I see in the launch line up is spin offs or "sequels" of PS3 games. Not enough to make a good launch if you haven't new franchises announced at least.

And what are you basing that on? Might be worth comparing the list of PSP games, the date they came out and the list of Vita games out and in development so far.

You can talk about it, it just means people have a lot less reason to listen to you. Your livelihood is caught up in Sony's continued success and the perception of that success. Of course you'll take their side.

I think that's unfairly presumptious. It's quite possible to have your own opinion about the industry and hold that completely distinct from what directly benefits you.

Heck, I went through a period of having a vested livelihood interest in the PSP's success, but the views I expressed in public forums were always my own - and I generally favoured titles on the DS, a platform I never had the privilege of working on.

It doesn't seem unreasonable to assume that a random rank-and-file dev is quite capable of offering his own opinions independently of how it affects his career.

(All that said: I do actually disagree with his conclusions. But that's all I have; disagreement.)

Also, in the latest catalogue:

"Who thinks you need to use protection?" Dick does.

"Who gives you a hands-on experience?" Dick does.

"Who sends you home with the hottest models?" Dick does.

"Who steals the show when it comes to entertainment?" Dick does.

Dick is awesome!

Didn't you hear? Vita is DOA, there won't be any new games released. One guy asked by Nikkei said so, it must be true!

Can confirm that My Target/Kmart and a mates Target in Melbourne CBD both have Vita display box on the shelves.. Apparently they'll be on shelf next month.. Genuinely think it was stock issues and they'll be getting them second shipment...

So it looks like Sony wanted to get the first shipment where they needed to be and second shipment will be everywhere..

Quickest way to eliminate the shelf space of Sony products that sell. You don't strong arm the retailers. They don't care where they get their profit from. If sony did that, it would just mean more space for their competitors.

So it looks like Sony wanted to get the first shipment where they needed to be and second shipment will be everywhere..

They really ought to have just said that then. "We can't meet demand so we're focusing on specialist retailers first" sounds so much better than "The Vita is a real gaming system for real gamers, so we'll only be selling it at real game stores"

Gaming companies don't have enough leverage to do strong arm tactics on retailers.

There's no reason to assume a new Monster Hunter is coming to Vita, and less reason to assume it would retain the same level of system selling power now that the franchise is on 3DS.
