GAF Votes: Final Fantasy series rankings (Voting ends Mar. 2)

Tactics really is a very different thing. If you go that root, you could add all sorts of games. I like that it's concise. Technically I think 4 The After Years should be on there, but no one would vote for it anyway.

Yeah, but we should spice things up. I said Tactics, just because is a fairly popular game, and a lot of people would've ranked very high if not in the top, unlike other non mainline entries.

Well then you'd have to let in all the other Tactics games... and we all know A2 would run away with all the votes!

What? No no no. OG Tactics Advance would win by far.

I think we missed a good comedy opportunity by not allowing Mystic Quest.

"Look.. I ranked it above 13, 14 AND 7, trololololol"

1. FF6 - Classic
2. FF12 - Loved Gambit System
3. FF11 - Put more hours into this game than any others combined, the Dark Souls of MMOs in its heyday.
4. FF4 - Great characters, loved the story as a kid
5. FF9 - Felt like a new "old" final fantasy when it came out
6. FF7 - Great back in the day, but now looking back at the story makes me go "uhhh"
7. FF1 - Great to see how the series started, even after playing 5-6 different ports of it. Also the class change was just so awesome.

01. FF6; When I imagine the very best of what FF can be, 6 is always where my mind leads me. Best ensemble of characters, best epic story, and let's not forget... the best soundtrack.
02. FF12; best replay value for me. I totally love the combat system and the world this game is set in. the characters, while less memorable than some other entries in the series, are adequate and well-voiced. far and above better than FF10's characters.
03. FF9; while FF12 may be what I would call the most unfairly panned of the series, FF9 is the most unfairly IGNORED. It does so much right, I can't believe people don't love it more. I assume it's because a lot of fans preferred the more realistic direction the series was heading in after FF7 and 8. Their loss.
04. FF4; You spoony bard! No top 10 can be taken seriously if it neglects FF4. While I love it, I don't think it's aged as well as FF6.
05. FF7; An excellent, if overpraised entry in the series.
06. FF8
07. FF13; Honorable mention: FF13-2 :)
08. FF5
09. FF3; The DS remake in particular made me appreciate it. It is the precursor to the FFT games and I love it for that.
10. FF1; it's seen many remakes over the years. story is kinda meh but it's a product of its time. still great fun.

I know a lot of people will rank FF10 somewhere in there, probably nearer to the top. I don't happen to think it was a particularly good entry, though. I feel similarly to 10 as I do 8, actually. But I felt 8 belonged on the list more, otherwise they are a bit of a tie for me.

I'm happy to see that 12 has ingratiated itself to a lot of very old school fans. It goes to show that we aren't all just voting up the games we played as kids, and that we are open to more original, mature visions of FF gameplay and storyline. I hope to see more FFs that break the mold like this...

Because that makes things much more complicated when tallying everything up in the end, and everyone's votes should be counted equally. The difference in point value between votes is small enough for it to come out in the wash in the end. Once this is finished, the cream will rise to the top with regard to total points.

isn't there a computer program who could give you the desired results in a sinlge move.

I commend you for the effort but no, I firmly disagree that all points should be counted equally.

To ilustrate my point: nearly noone has played FF14 and while it may very well deserve to be at the bottom, it will land there for the wrong reasons, mainly because nobody has played it, instead of being there because in all honesty, gaf believes it's the place it deserves.

or: if a guy chooses any FF game as his number 1 game out of four random entries (let's say, FF2,FF5, FF11 and FF14) well, how much weight has his opinion, when he hasn't played series highlights like FF4, FF7 or FF10??

I don't mean to come an trash a nice thread with a nice dynamic but I think a full rated list whould deserve a higher base value than a 4 games' list.

1. FF7; Not the first Final Fantasy I played but the first I had finished when I was younger, easily my favourite of the lot, from the crazy story to the the game mechanics, fun mini games to the awesome over world full of little side quests and things to do. Easily one of the high points of the series.
2. FF8; The game that had to follow FF7 and its fandom, it was a great game with an interesting story and good mechanics, even if some of them could be broken a little with magic spamming your stats. The world was a great one, a good mix of fantasy and Sci-fi and I can't resist how awesome Ragnarok as a ship looked.
3. FF12; What I considered a step forward in the series at the time that then took a step back with FF13 in regards to some mechanics and the Voice Acting was top notch, taking out the loading of battles and smaller confined routes that previous PS2 FF titles had, it had a load of side quests and levels to explore while not being plagued with some silly love story seen in most FF games. It is a pity the International edition never got released in PAL territories which will hopefully be rectified in future with a PSN release.
4. FF6; Easily the best of the 2D Final Fantasy games without a doubt, a good strong story and interesting characters with a world that at times could make you laugh. A game that felt like Square had put a lot of heart into which more recent games have felt utterly void of.
5. FF9; At first I found it quite hard to get into after FF7/8, but after I returned to the game a few months later and got my head round some of the mechanics I found it to be a good enjoyable game, very much based on FF games before FF7/8 and another with lots of hidden quests to find. Though it still has one of the silliest end bosses.
6. FF10; The first PS2 FF game, it was a solid game though I personally didn't like the Sphere Grid that much, but I will never forget playing it one day constantly and not moving till 7am the next day just to get to the end.
7. FF10-2; To me 10-2 to me is more of a second half of FF10 and not a separate game, at least in my head. If you can ignore the girlyness of it all it was a perfectly good game and in some regards is very much a pre-cursor to what we ended up getting in FF13 but with more control and a less stupid story.

That is all the FF games I could find enough to rate, I didn't like FF13 enough to stick it on the list, and while I own all the FF games from 1 to 13 ignoring FF11, I can't remember enough that it would be unfair to rank them next to the others.

  1. FF7 - It gets lots of vocal hate and a lot more love. There isn't anything about this game that I didn't enjoy. One of the few games where I can say I enjoyed every character, and their back story. I understand that it's not the end all and be all of rpg games. At this point it is extremely dated. The graphics are unbearable for most. Still for me this is the best Final Fantasy title ever made.
  2. FF8 - Gets tons of hate, most of which is probably deserved. The leveling system is a bit absurd, but I didn't mind. I enjoyed the GF-junction system, but I wouldn't say its a great system. The story was a clusterfuck of bizarre, but I loved it. The characters and world were excellent. The music was beautiful, and the graphics stunning at the time. Triple Triad is still the best FF mini game.
  3. FF10 - I hate Tidus. I really hate Tidus. Did I mention that I hate Tidus. Despite my hate for Tidus there is no denying that FF10 is one of the finest games in the Final Fantasy series. The sphere grid is an enjoyable leveling system. The story was enjoyable(sans Tidus). Blitzball was excellent fun. The graphics were magnificent and has some of the best music in the FF series. I hated the inclusion of voice acting and I missed having a world map. Still these missteps are not enough to keep FF10 from being my third best in the Final Fantasy series.
  4. FF6 - My favorite 2D Final Fantasy. There is nothing wrong with this game. Its nearly flawless. Awesome characters and a fantastic story.
  5. FF4 - It has the job system. I love the job system. Also introduced ATB.
  6. FF12 - I hate all the characters. The story was abysmal. The gameplay, however, was fantastic. I spent all my time enjoying the bounty board sidequests.
  7. FF10-2 - Quirky and enjoyable yet untraditional spin off. Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it for what it was.
  8. FF5 - Was a quality rpg. Nothing super memorable.
  9. FF3 - Also a quality rpg.
  10. FF1 - Gets points for starting the whole shebang off.

I adore 12, put 100 hours into the original release and another 100 into the Zodiac version. Actually..if we could vote for the Zodiac version I'd probably move that up to my #2 slot. But it's not because it's more original or mature, it's just downright fun. Even with the non-class based license boards there's a great sense of progress and customization. But mature..ehh..Vaan and Penelo sort of kill that sense and original, well, it has a lot of new ideas but things like quickenings are not well realized and the gambits sometimes lack scope (this is better in Zodiac) so the execution falls a bit flat.

But that world..oh man that world..and those hunts.. yeah.. 4,5,6 were my first FFs but 12 is quite up there. Which reminds me I completely forgot FF5 on my list for some strange reason. Ugh. Fixed that.

I haven't played enough of FF5 & FF8 to rate them.

1. FF9; My favourite. Amazing cast, amazing soundtrack and very interesting skill system. Best game ever. :) Go Vivi.

2. FF6; One of the most FF storylines. Beautiful music. Just love this game.

3. FF11; Even though it is an MMO, it has one of the most amazing storylines in any FF game and I have the fondest memories of the game. Not to mention Tarutaru rock.

4. FF8; My first FF game. I still love the story and the characters and I loved using all the different Guardian Forces.

5. FF10; I was blown away by the graphics when the game came out. Interesting storyline and it has my favourite turn-based battle system.

6. FF7; Good game, just not my favourite.

7. FF13-2; Finally a good modern FF game. I love Noel and the Moogle. The monster recruitment system is tons of fun, the storyline is interesting albeit confusing and some of the sidequests are hilarious (Moogle and the Bresha ruins <3). It's still lower on my list considering how far I personally feel its come from Final Fantasy. It has so many of the old elements but I still kind of feel it could have been titled Final Sci-Fi. :/

7. FF12; Amazing world and interesting cast (especially Fran and Balthier). Battle system was a bit boring to me, as it felt like FFXI only in an offline game.

8. FF14; Failed launch aside. The game just has a certain charm and I have thoroughly enjoyed the last few months. A nice return to a proper fantasy FF game. Love my Lalafell.

9. FF4; I only played the DS version but I liked the cast and the storyline. Only negative was the insane difficulty of the DS version.

10. FF10-2. J-Pop storyline aside, I loved the job and battle system. FFX was my favourite turn based battle system and FF10-2 my favourite ATB system.

Doesn't count:
11. FF3

I basically haven't played 1, 2, or 5 (or played so little of them I can't really vote). 6 and 4 would probably be higher if they were more recent games, I just have a hard time getting sucked into the story/characters in 2D/sprite based RPGs. Probably because my first RPG was FF9. 12 is the only one in the 10 that I didn't finish. I didn't really hate it, but I never really felt like playing past 9 or 10 hours in.

4. FF4 One of the best Xmas gift I got as a kid.

6. FF11 Hated it at first, slowly learned to enjoy it hehe
7. FF7 Loved Midgard, could play a whole game just in that city alone.
8. FF5 Like the Job System, dislike the over-world art.
9. FF8 Loved the beginning of the game~
10. FF13 I really did love the graphics so I played through it... not much else tho.

1. FF8: simply the best, for me it has the best music, the best mini games (triple triad), the best CG, Best hero (yes Squall) because he acted just like me when i was 16, best ending, best world map, best Summons,,, and the most shocking cutscene in any FF (Battle starts with seifer, suddenly odin arrives and i say to myself that finally he came at the right time, i leave the control aside waiting for him to finish his animation and destroys seifer, but Holy shit.....)

2. FF10: everything that i loved about the eight's one is back in this one since it is the same team that mad it, great music, fantastic story, most touching ending, gorgeous cg, best supporting character ever (AURON) best battle system in the series, the only grip is the non existence of a traditional world map.

3. FF6: Most interesting cast in the franchise ever, great music, long game, best enemy in the series (Kefka), end of the world, out of this world end boss. classic

4. FF9: cute characters, touching story, nostalgic game, great cg as usual, good fighting system, this game will always put a smile on your face while playing, this is a celebration of the FF series

5. FF7: great story, shocking discovery about cloud in middle of the game, mindblowing graphics at the time, great world map, unforgettable cast.

6. FF12: Biggest maps in the series, Ivalice story is fantastic, but the story of the game is not so fantastic, great but not fantastic.

I don't mean to come an trash a nice thread with a nice dynamic but I think a full rated list whould deserve a higher base value than a 4 games' list.

I understand your concern, but think of it this way...

This GAF Votes aims to determine a ranking of GAF's favorite FF games in order of how much love each entry gets via votes. Naturally, we can't expect someone to vote or rank a game that they haven't played. Voting is meant for people to show support for the games they have played by ranking them accordingly. It's a popularity contest, so of course the FF games that few people have played (like 14) have little chance at placing near the top. But that makes perfect sense, doesn't it? How would forcing people to vote for games that they haven't played help matters? They would just put the ones that they never played at the bottom in random order.

Plus, when I do publish the final rankings, I am going to do it as a Top 10. That way, the absolute bottom won't factor in anyway, and we can focus on what GAF's Top 10 favorite FF games are. We're not looking to see which is the worst in the series, but rather which ones are the best in the eyes of GAFers.

That being said, I am considering discounting posts that only include 1-4 votes. Someone who has only played a couple of FF games really shouldn't be trying to rank the entire series anyway, IMO.

his opinion will be disregarded because he didn't follow the extremely simple OP guidelines. BADDABING!

I am not going to purposefully discount votes that aren't formatted properly. That being said, the likelihood that they might get accidentally discounted during the clean-up process prior to tallying the votes increases if they're not formatted properly. I'm pretty good at preventing any votes from getting passed over, though.
