As long as the 3ds hardware is not profitable they won't be revising it.

Agreed. I strongly believe the revision will have a larger screen etc and if they cant make a profit on the screen and hardware they have now they wont be launching a more exotic one yet.

A 3DS redesign doesn't necessarily need to be any bigger or smaller. I think some more significant changes would be:

- longer battery life
- non-shitty cameras
- circle pad pro additions built-in
- better grip on circle pad(s)
- larger 3D viewing area if possible
- rumble...?

Bolded would require a larger system.

Not necessarily. Increased efficiency could improve battery life. Perhaps OLED screens? And I'm sure they could adjust the guts to accommodate the extra circle pad and shoulder buttons.

-we're now in the double-digits on the countdown for E3!

I'm hoping we don't see anything new at GDC. It'll kind of take away from my E3 hype :)

Just think; we're exactly equidistant between the NA Skyward Sword release and the Nintendo E3 press conference.

Those arguments and meltdowns, which seem like yesterday, are actually further away than the WiiU megatons.

EXCITE.

GDC next week - hype train is going to be bad. Hopefully we'll get some tidbit out of it, though.

You mean the hype train is going to be nonsensical and retarded, since none of Nintendo's big wigs are giving a conference this year. At the very best, Epic might drop a few hints but beyond that, there are no other opportunities for Nintendo to show the system.

We could get leaks about what Crytek is showing.

Oled screens are only more efficient at saving battery power when displaying darker colors. With white, the consumption vs a standard LCD is much higher.

They can't adjust the guts to do anything, there is literally no room inside the device for anything, it's basically a solid brick. The place where a second circle-pad's guts would go is where the battery is. And how could they get increased efficiency, did some super new technology just come out, that wasn't available a year or two ago? I mean, the device is already designed to be as efficient as possible without massively increasing the price, that's what Nintendo's really good at.

Let's hope there aren't any games that are just a solid white screen.

I'm not exactly betting money on the next model staying the same size; I'm just throwing out ideas. I mainly just wanted to list possible changes regardless of what happens to the size.

No and yes. Adding the extra shoulder buttons of the CPP would require a bigger unit but there are plenty of other way to increase battery life without making the unit physically larger.

If I'm not mistaken I believe all the 3DS's silicon is printed on a 65nm process, so dropping down to 32nm (or whatever is feasible) would alone greatly increase the systems efficiency and shrink all the integrated cirucits, making room for a larger battery too.

I'm also not 100% convinced that Nintendo's really using the system's motherboard space as efficiently as they could. Sure the mother board looks jam-packed at first glance but I have to ask, is it really? Looking at the guts of Modern smartphones, they are somehow able to pack even more technology than the 3DS onto motherboards with substantially less area.

Just compare.

So... you want the system to be $250 again?

I'd pay $250 for a larger OLED screen, improved battery, and built in second circle pad in a 3DSXL. I'm not certain if they'd still be able to make a profit or if it'd be popular or not, but I'd definitely be on board.

veering off topic, but we should also consider that Nintendo may be reluctant to release any revision in the near future due to the confusion the 3DS caused as being just another DS model. Releasing yet another one so soon may confuse the general market, especially considering this is a dedicated gaming device, not another phone.

I would pay that much too. Even without the OLED. Really want a 3DS XL.

I'd be more worried about devaluing the original 3DS model if the revisions is both considerably improved as well as more expensive. What could potentially happen is the revision would be much more desirable but priced out of market range, meaning people are reluctant to buy either, driving down sales.

Indeed. In an Iwata Asks, it was mentioned that Nobuo Nagai (RIP) was actually quite proud of this.

Iwata said:
The first thing (Nobuo) Nagai-san, who's in charge at the Uji plant, said to me when he looked over the designs for Nintendo 3DS before mass production began was "This time it's fully packed right from the start."

Yes this is also a very good point

Personally, I think the 3DS hardware is just fine as it is. I've noticed the recent models are a little different (very slightly) from the launch models as in the buttons feels somewhat different, especially the d-pad and the start/select/home buttons. The bottom screen also doesn't seem to scratch the upper, and the circle pad seems a little less resistant. Now this could just be my crazy subjective mind, but it seems very small tweaks may have been made with the recent models that were implemented in when the Red colour came out

As much as I would like a larger, higher res screen and second circle pad, overall the 3DS is quite a solid system in terms of UI and overall make, unlike the original DS which was practically begging for a revision upon release.

I think Nintendo will either offer a bundle with a HDD (probably external), or at least sell a "Nintendo Approved" HDD separately at launch.

They're moving more and more into downloadable games, they can't be blind to the money Microsoft and Sony are making in downloadables, and they have to want a piece of that pie.

That means the more people with an HDD the better. Enable people to download a lot of games and indie developers will have a huge target audience.

I think if it's just somewhere in the manual a lot of people won't see it, and many won't realize what they need in order to download games. Buying an external HD might be too intimidating. Putting a bundle out there will at least have people questioning WHY they might want the more expensive one, and thus learn what the HDD is all about.

I dunno. I think Nintendo would be missing out if they don't put an external HD out there fairly prominently.

Edit: if there's no bundle, how much does a decent gaming HDD cost? Is there a "gaming" HDD? I assume there are access speeds and spin rates and who knows what. =)

I'm back! Survived the weekend without phone/tv/internets just fine. Spent Saturday night with my grandma-in-law (90 yrs old), mother-in-law (67), partner, and many types of animals both wild and domestic.. we were up until 330am playing dominoes. Good times. Good to be back in the city.

Some of my in-laws live in the deep southern woods of Alabama, in houses either they or their ancestors built themselves. What architects would call "uncoded structures." It's a whole different world.

One item: the complete script for their upcoming E3 presentation. I'm not asking for much. :D
Probably my favorite answer. But then again, I love E3 much like "normal" people love the major holidays.
(and yeah.. the structure we stayed in was an "uncoded" shed/trailer mutation. Dad's an architect, and he gets a kick out of it.)

Not that unrealistic. Considering the Wii U will probably get a ton of Best of from the PS360 Games
As much shit that I talk about third parties, I wouldn't mind getting some "catch-up" ports. In fact, I expect them for certain series if they suddenly decide to begin treating Nintendo's console, umm.., decently. For example, if your company suddenly decides that the Wii U is worthy of Darksiders 2, we'd better get the first installment. I'm thinking the Assassin's Creed series would need to come over as well.

Considering Cristal Dynamics, Namco, Kojima Pro cold reception I doubt that 3rd parties will go all out with a Nintendo console.

Well yeah, thinking about it, Nintendo comes to this generation with 2 successful platforms, it could be pretty stupid if third parties give the shaft again.
Never underestimate the stupidity of third party decision-makers. En masse, they seemed to forget that they are in a business, and decided to give the finger to the largest-userbase/cheapest-development-costs system. But look at how pretty those games that they used to make are!

I still won't believe in a turnaround in support until I see it on the store shelves. (Ports in the launch window are nice, but they don't quite count.) There was plenty of happy-talk from developers about Nintendo and the Wii in the run-up to launch back in 2006/2007, but all the vague, non-committal complements over time evolved into Excuse A, Excuse B, Test Game A, Test Game B..

We already have one, it's the "out of business" developer thread (with few exceptions on the list).

Ha! Post of the friggin' weekend! I'd say more, but.. hmm.. the Snesfreak Rule applies here.

How hard would it be for Wii U to get 1080p versions of current 360/PS3 games?

Assuming it's powerful enough...

Who or which team is developing the WiiU OS? What kernel will it be based on? What kind of application structure will it be able to support, Flash, HTML5 Java? is The webrowser going to be by opera or is mozilla going to be involved seeing as they seem to be releasing their own OS called "gecko" which reminded me of nintendo and the OS for the new console.

It is important for the web browser to be seamlessly integrated so that you can use it ingame without any hassles.

Whoever is doing the OS better be allowed to make it a hundred times more flexible than the current one. The SD card update was so epic Iwata seemed to hint that the OS had to practically be rewritten just to accept it. Same for the browser. Wii Opera was pretty good the first few years but then they just gave up. Also, if they're truly serious about the app store then we'd better get a dedicated YouTube player pronto. YouTube used to work great both on the standard browser and YT XL but now is almost impossible to load on the former and videos cut out after about 2-5 min on the former (I used to be able to watch MST3K episodes all the time on my Wii this way).

I would pay this also.

Makes so much sense that they will release a larger unit at a higher price and let both coexist on the market like the DS.

Is anyone remotely excited for Arkham City at all?

It would be interesting if Nintendo has plans to release two different Wii U models. For the alternative model, they could just include an SD card on top of whatever amount of built-in memory the Wii U comes with and eventually buy a USB hard drive if you need it.

If it's powerful enough I would assume it's not too difficult but I'm not sure if we will see many for current/older games from the generation. Will be reliant on if anyone thinks they are able to make money on them.

Maybe later on after the launch we might see some collections type thingys like a Mass Effect or Final Fantasy 13 series pack or something (just a couple of examples). Depends on the publisher and how well the system performs I would think.

This, and I specifically remember at one point in this thread a discussion about early devkits. One point of focus for Nintendo was ease of porting PS360 games..

So if Nintendo does things correctly, the only "iffy" thing I can see about the porting question is 1080p.. I guess?

And I need to do some looking into Batman. It might be up my alley, and I plan on watching a few "Let's Play" videos between here and E3..

As far as HUDs go, yes certain things are best kept on the main screen, like the pilot example, because often that info is designed to interact directly with the image on the main screen. However when it comes to separate things like inventory of course its easier to have it on a second touch screen. You're trying to make this big issue about looking away from the screen down at your hands, don't your arms move then? Can't you just bring the pad up closer to the screen? Having the inventory on your controller at all times means whenever you want to change items you only have to glance away from the screen, move your thumb a few inches and press directly on what you want, something that will take a second at most. A fraction of the time it'll take to bring up an inventory screen on your main screen and cycle through items with a stick to find the one you want. Not to mention there'd be no need to pause the game either. I think I know why you're making such a big deal about it though...

I'm just saying it's a marginal benefit at best, and not one I think is worth the potential drawbacks of controllers that cost $100+ or not being able to use more than one of these controllers at a time. The other benefit of streaming the game straight to the controller instead of the TV also cancels out the benefits of the secondary screen when in use.
