Would it be possible to have another setting field to "enable" multiquote? Then just leave the single quote button in the postbit if its off/default.
Yes, that is also an option but it could punish those who want to do both.

Couldn't HTML5 local storage help here? User wants to quote a post, that post gets saved to local storage (it's a simple key/value pair), then when user hits reply the quotes get cleared from LS into the text edit field. It's supported by every browser, too (even IE above v8).
It's more complicated than that. The body of a post is different between its composing value and its resting HTML. I prefer to let vBulliten do that part.

Because the Mobile site now has ads, why not open it up for desktop browsers? I like making my browser window really tiny during work. The mobile site helps a ton.

  1. Have only one button for each post that only marks for multi-quoting. You then have to click the Compose button at the bottom.
  2. Have only one button that when clicked prompts if you want to either select that post for multi-quote or quote and compose immediately
  3. Try stuffing two separate buttons in that bar, one for immediate quoting and another for multi-quote marking.

Thoughts?
Definitely not #1. That would be quite an annoyance to have to scroll all the way to the bottom every time I want to reply to something, esp. if i'm midway so there's no way to jump. The problem with #2 is that it contradicts the whole point of the multi-quote feature, which is a fast ability to reply to multiple posts in one go. Having an alert pop up after every time I press the button would be quite annoying imo.

I think the only real solution is #3, and I really don't think it's too crammed; definitely doable. You can have one button closest to the top edge and the other nearest to the bottom.

I mean, the hit size for jumping to a quote (that button is tiny) or selecting 'advanced search' is smaller than whatever the two quote buttons will end up being, so I think it's doable.

That seems a bit counterproductive, I don't think this should be given an option as it's an inline GAF prime feature, and doing so wouldn't give the best of both worlds at all, imo.

This is interesting, I wonder if that could be done by putting a "MOBILE" link at the bottom of the page in-between "contact us" and "return to top".

Hope posting works soon. I actually am getting to the point of preferring the mockup over the current live version. I will be using this app extensively on my iPad!

I've been really enjoying the new mockup over the last little while, and I noticed another little quirk after repeated browsing. For some reason, topics that have 1,XXX posts in them will be listed as "1,XXX reply" instead of "1,XXX replies" on the list. An image that illustrates this (again, linked due to size) can be found here. It seems that this only applies to posts in the 1000s; I deliberately took a screenshot that illustrates topics with 17, 181, and 11,041 pages listed without the error (so it doesn't seem to be caused by a leading 1 or a 1 followed by a comma—it's unique to numbers in the 1,000 range). I hope this is helpful!

Mockup update

Composing new posts/threads is now enabled as is quoting, multi-quoting, and editing of your own posts. Read my last post above for the rules on how multi-quoting works. Also, be sure to clear cookies/cache before reporting problems.

Posting from there now, I like the multiquote works. But the graphics used for both buttons are quite inferior to what we were using in the old version. They're just a bit too dark and pop out.

Also interesting to see that you eliminated the compact quote style when posting, and instead have the quote appear in plain text. I liked it the other way, tbh, if not simply for having less clutter of text to scroll past to begin typing my post.

Obviously multiquote wouldnt work too well with the previous method, but perhaps there could be a way to hide and show the quote inline, instead of having it take up do much space when quoting a post.

Anyway, going to post from here now, feels like a milestone!!

Works nicely, I assume the clashing black icons are placeholder instead of the white they were previously?

Lol. Actually, those icons were just me trying something different. I didn't realize they would be so despised. I'll try making them more like the originals.

:D

They just clashed so badly with the rest of the color scheme since they were just.. black with no shading or similar. IMO the original whites works best considering the rest of the theme is predominantly white. I suppose for an inverted scheme, black would be more suitable.

Is there a chance of having an image address option/upload from phone/tablet...etc option in the user cp. The second one is less likely but at least you could have a text box so I can take an image URL and that can be my new avatar.

Edit: how do I get to the bottom without scrolling? Ckoler, great mockup. I just wish we could have an ad free version.

The changes to the mockup are truly great. I love that settings and messages can be accessed from any page now, tag links can now be seen/clicked, and the blue text for the threads page works really well too. I can see threads made from each profile, think we'll have post history too? The look of the headers and buttons is drastically better than what we used to have to, great work man. Love the new way you worked in first/last page and goto. Mockup is my new bookmark.

As far as shortening ridiculous tags like mine, maybe you could leave 2 lines instead of just 1 when cutting it off? Not speaking for mine, but I'd hate to miss seeing those full long tags, some tags are too cool to not be able to read, ha.

Yeah, I love this quite a bit. Nothibg quite like using a beautiful app from bed...which I'm doing right now.

But I agree about the tags, though maybe ckohler could just decrease the font size depending on the tags length, to fit it all in.

Oh and ckohler, when will you be applying the iOS home screen icon to the mockup? Really just want to put this on my first page home screen and have it look like a native app.

So how is the mockup going to look on the new ipad? Will the assets look blurry?
Probably a bit, but not everything will look too bad. Prob a wait and see type of thing.

Is it just me or on Chrome Beta (for Android) and ICS Browser, do the quote buttons all appear stacked upon each other above the profile pic.

With posting now enabled, mockup mobile gaf is now best mobile gaf. Great job!

Might be you, Galaxy Nexus (gsm, 4.0.2) and no issues on chrome or stock browser.

Wow, just logged in for the first time. I concur.

Only feeding my already powerful GAF addiction. ;)

My only gripe is the ads =/
I would gladly pay to remove them, but i remember hearing a mention that ads are necessary. So im glad they dont intrude in the center of pages and stick to the top and bottom.

One mildly funny aspect of the (placeholder) ads on here is that I keep tapping that blue arrow to post instead of hitting the post button. It just attracts more attention than the button itself.

I keep tapping on it because I really need quality bike wheels.

Posting from the mock-up app...awwww yeah!

Biggest thing that sucks is that default ad image has a button on it that looks like it could be the reply button. Probably not going to be there when this goes live, but thought I'd mention it.

Q: I'm using Android Chrome, which is non-flash enabled. Anyway to have the embedded youtube vids of the html5 variety?
This is tricky. You see, for iOS devices to be able to embed YouTube clips, Safari looks for the old style embed tags. If I embedded using YouTube's HTML5 embed method, I think it won't work anymore. I should probably test thus but the last time I checked, only EMBED tags did the trick.

Par for the course. All ads are designed to somewhat fool you into clicking them.

Hey op anything in work for droid? Sorry on phone atm hard to even search.
Read the OP.

Is there anyway to know if someone is online? Could you possibly make a separate page on the front page that links to all the people online?

Agreed there, it's just this particular ad seems oddly specific. Did you create the reply button in a way that mimics the ad or did the ad mimic some standard UI element that you're using?

Like is that arrow the default icon for some functionality in some OS somewhere, or is it purely coincidence?

I guess if the add is mimicking something that's common that you're using, I'd prefer you change the way the reply button looks so it doesn't fall prey to something like this.

Not a deal breaker regardless, but something is very specific about that one.

Pretty sure it's a coincidence. The ad is a generic one, as is the button. When ads get set up i'm sure there will be more people complaining about the hideousness of the ads, but it's just the way it is.

Didn't say that I didn't like ads, if done right.

What I don't like, however, are ads that try to trick you into clicking them by looking like something else. To me, this is malicious and has no business on this site.
All ads are like that, where have you been? Regardless, the ad on the mockup site is amply a generic placeholder to give you a sense of where the ad would be placed.

Where have you been the past month? :p

What sort of reality distortion field are you existing in?

Yeah, I would think so. Otherwise, a lot of people will not know about it for a long time.

I suspect the long term plan would be to automatically redirect people on mobile devices to the mobile site and allow them to flip back to the full-site if they wanted to via some link like most sites.

Don't think I've hard, but I don't think the mobile interface is meant to be a specific thing that you have to access directly and is more just "how you view NeoGAF when on a mobile device".

Maybe I'm wrong, though!

Yes, that would be the intention.

Hell, I think it should be a stickied thread/news bulletin type deal to let everyone know there's an official 'lite' GAF version they'll be directed to one their mobile devices.

I imagine a lot of people still are misled by the 'iPhone' in this thread title and haven't checked it out since..

I'm pretty certain that this version, when completed and final (i.e. secure with mod/admin abilities to use, as well) that it will be hosted on the GAF servers/take a "m.neogaf.com" type deal.

[edit] beaten!!
