Kotaku Rumor: PlayStation 4 codenamed 'Orbis', 2013, AMD CPU, SI GPU, Anti-Used Games

if the anti-used games part is true, it won't affect me either way, but it would bring a smile to my face. I hate leeches and poor people.

I don't understand why PS4 would have an issue running (most) PSN titles. Something like Castle Crashers or Scott Pilgrim would be too hard to emulate? WTF. A PC has millions of different possible hardware combinations, but in 99% of cases there's no "backwards compatibility" hurdles to overcome unless it's dealing with something like a 10-15 year OS difference.

Because PC games are not programmed at the hardware level.

Here's how our main source says it's currently shaping up: new games for the system will be available one of two ways, either on a Blu-Ray disc or as a PSN download (yes, even full retail titles). If you buy the disc, it must be locked to a single PSN account, after which you can play the game, save the whole thing to your HDD, or peg it as "downloaded" in your account history and be free to download it at a later date.

So basicallly if you bought the retail version it also entitled you to the DD version too?

-No BC, even with PSN stuff
-Supposedly weak in power
-Anti-used games

It's like a system straight out of hell. I like your exclusives Sony and I like how you're still dedicated to gamers but if that system is true then I'm out. I didn't spend hundreds on PSN stuff to piss it all away. Looks like there's a good chance I'm going PC only next gen.

bish gets all the credit :)

The worst part about this news is games being locked to PSN accounts. Already a fucking nightmare to deal with on 360/Live.

maybe they really might develop a proprietary high-bandwidth port where you can plug in an optional Cell-on-a-stick.

Lol at people saying they are done with consoles if these "anti used games" rumors ends up being true.

Out of curiosity, where do you plan on playing video games?

Edit: Lack of PSN/Live Arcade/Wii-Ware/Virtual Console backwards compatibility would make me super pissed.

Uh, I'll just continue playing on my PC.

No BC is a big thing for me, so if that's true then I'll be waiting a bit before I even think about buying the next consoles. I don't buy used games but again if true it's amazingly anti-consumer. They need to stop worrying about used games killing their profit and more about bullshit like this killing their profit due to people not putting up with it.

It's called a PC, Jim, where savings actually are passed on to the consumer.

Uh, I'll just continue playing on my PC.

PC's are the most anti-used platform of all. (Which is what I play primarily.)

Steam for life. You won't regret your switch, unless of course you're expecting to play/trade in used games. I just don't understand people bitching about anti-used games and then saying that they will play on PC, since it's not like PC has allowed used games for a long ass time. For the record, I'm extremely in favor of PC gaming, I'm just questioning the logic of some people. I don't blame anyone for not trusting Microsoft or Sony, when Valve has proven themselves with Steam. If that's the reason, then I understand.

Like Steamworks. I'm very okay with this. It's the logical step Sony needs to take with their DD philosophy. I don't want to have to suffer high DD costs when stores are selling games for 50% off and B2G1 Free.

I wouldn't follow the pastebin given that it claims an eight core Intel CPU for the 720 and stuff like no hard drive on the PS4.

Please stop that 4K nonsense for games.

Just completely let that go and let devs make games run perfectly (60fps, great textures and great AA) in 720p or, and i think even this will be waay too hard, 1080p with a steady framerate .

What?

Southern islands GPU.Possible 4K resolution which almost all HDTV's don't even have. 3D gaming. Power is the only thing positive about this rumor.

PC has had such "anti-used" system for ages.

But Steam has given us a reason to not need used games. Do you think MS or Sony will follow Gabens lead? Go look at the prices in games on demand.

They know once they have you in their ecosystem they got you and you will pay. Steam on the other hand has competition that they need to keep at bay.

This is going to be at E3 if its coming out next year right? Didnt Sony say no hardware at E3? I know Microsoft said that too.

also I do what someone mentioned earlier in the thread, I purposely sign off so people won't message me and shit a lot of the time when I play.

...and most likely keep using Steam&GOG&Origin that don't allow used games anyway? That's what they are going with this you know.

Why do people keep bringing up this terrible example? The lack of resale value for DD games on PC is more than made up for by the very frequent sales and promotional packages.

Certain pubs and devs always spit this tripe about how if there wasn't a used game market with consoles, the savings would be passed on to the consumer. Anyone who believes that is hilariously naive.

Can someone explain to me what is so unique about the Cell that emulating PSN games would be so difficult to do?

Completely different architecture and instruction sets.

PC gaming uses API layers to ensure maximum compatibility among different hardware. This introduces a lot of overhead, whereas consoles allow you to program directly to the hardware and exploit every ounce of power that the thing has. This is why your PC that's 50x more powerful than your xbox 360 is only capable of making graphics that are 10x better.

That'd be all well and good if they were at Steam prices. Which they won't be.

The 4K note is mostly interesting since it speaks to the fillrate of the card they're using, as opposed to actually using 4K resolution for games.

The PS4's GPU in particular, we're told, will be capable of displaying Orbis games at a resolution of up to 4096x2160, which is far in excess of the needs of most current HDTV sets.

Time to buy a new HDTV.

Do I win a prize for talking about my penis on the Internet???
I cannot be the only one reading "Orbis" and thinking of this, can I?

ps9.jpg
Nope I thought of that ad the second I read the name.

Anywho the lack of BC I can handle, I plan on keeping my PS3 just hope it doesnt YLOD. The used game thing is pretty bullshit but it sounds like MS is doing the same thing so what the hell can we do. Hey at least PS4 seems to still be disc based.

Don't think you can simply buy the disc and stay offline, though; like many PC games these days, you'll need to have a PSN account and be online to even get the thing started.

If you then decide to trade that disc in, the pre-owned customer picking it up will be limited in what they can do. While our sources were unclear on how exactly the pre-owned customer side of things would work, it's believed used games will be limited to a trial mode or some other form of content restriction, with consumers having to pay a fee to unlock/register the full game
FUUUUUUUCK

There goes:
-renting games from Redbox
-borrowing games from friends
-borrowing games from libraries

Man, someone having the balls to go up against used games would be pretty epic.

Really, I am now sure how it would all turn out (haven't completely analyzed it) but it would be fun as hell to watch.

Also, as a consumer, I'm not even completely sure what my feelings on this are. I really don't buy used games ever, but I feel (at least at first glance) that in some way the used games market may help my ability to get lower prices overall on th games I do buy.

Have you guys seen Coxy's post :

I don't care for the postbin info but that Orbis thing is pretty much set in stone.
And Kotaku for all their shit is pretty spot on with the Orbis Vitae quote and the sketches from the site above are clearly pointing to a strong integration between Sony products (here we see Move camera + Mobile phone).

When it comes to playing Friends' copies I don't see the problem, a good buddy will give his password. But it kills borrowing from a more distant friend though.

The 4K note is mostly interesting since it speaks to the fillrate of the card they're using, as opposed to actually using 4K resolution for games.

Sure, as long as they are not focussing on actually using the resolution then it's fine to have that power at hand.

So if this should be released in 2013, doesn't this mean that at E3, we will get..

- a re-unveiling of the Wii U
- possible two announcements of new consoles set for 2013, one from MS and one from Sony

If next-gen consoles lock out used games, it's going to be death to the non-AAA titles. Who on Earth is going to spend $60 (assuming we don't get a price hike due to "better" next-gen games) on just an average game that you can't even trade in for decent value?

don't fuck with my rentals, sony. don't fuck with me.

Indeed, Gamefly is a godsend for me. I still buy what really appeals to me, but many games I just want to play and be done with. While still only rumors, there has been an awful lot of rumbling about this being the new direction, nonetheless. A worrisome sign that hopefully bears no fruit when it is all said and done.
