The show's been hit-or-miss, especially during some of the later episodes, but this one was fucking gold.

Depends on whether you're a studio employee or on contract or a total freelancer. The most common form of payment is by the frame. It's terrible and inhumane. Lolz.

Ok, well that would explain the cost differences then.
Shaft stuff is barely animated so it must be pretty cheap to make.
That does make sense now. I thought they were paid like normal human beings.

Actually, why the fuck would anyone become an animator in that kind of working condition? I know osme people love the work but fuck I wouldnt even do something I liked if I wasnt paid shit for it.
People gotta eat. Theres rent and everything else. No way this pays the bills.

Could someone recommend what some of the best anime series are out there to someone who really hasn't seem much at all? I used to follow Robotech when I was a kid and it was on TV, which I loved, and I've seen a few films here and there, but I really am a neophyte.

I like science fiction stuff and don't like stuff like DragonBallZ, if that helps.

Now you know why so many studios are adopting CGI and outsourcing things to Korea.

Yeah it makes sense now. I don't understand why conditions arent better for these animators though. How do companies get away with this kind of shit? Its not like people dont know about it (other than me)

Do you like space opera?

If yes, Crest of the Stars

If no, maybe a Gundam?

That reminds me, when are we going to forcepersuade Envelope to watch all of Cowboy Bebop? His blasphemy against the first episode cannot be allowed to stand.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Planetes and Eve no Jikan for DEEP and MACHOOR sci fi.

I think movies are a good idea to ease a guy in.

Making him watch 1 billion episodes of LOGH might not be healthy.

I love series that have continuity and run for a long time as one long story. That was always what I dug about Robotech. Each episode continued on from the previous one.

Half the experience is listening to the soundtrack. Why would you ever think reading a Wikipedia article could replace that?

How would he know if the show is right for him without even reading up a little about it? Aside from risking possible spoilers.
Come on, don't be s spoil sport. Let this new guy experience the show how he sees fit.

Also, he's not in on that joke, so he wouldn't understand that it was even one.

Season starts in two days, so I got around to finalizing my list.

Full series guaranteed: Fate/Zero S2, Slope no Apollon, Medaka Box
High tier: Jormungand, Tsuritama, Uchuu Kyoudai
Will check out: Hyouka, Natsuiro Kiseki, Tasogare Otome x Amnesia, Lupin III
Special cases: Saint Seiya Omega (if it gets good impressions), Mysterious Girlfriend X (already read the manga, will see how the adaptation holds up), Phi Brain S2 (I said I wasn't going to bother, but Hiroshi Kamiya, Tomokazu Sugita, and Daisuke Ono as villains mean I'll suffer through it)

Chihaya faces
the former Queen, Yumi.
Yumi is an ordinary woman but she is 100% dedicated to the game of Karuta. She is known for being tenacious and refusing to give up.
Can Chihaya win this?
It starts out pretty evenly matched, but then Chihaya starts to get the upper hand. she gets confident. Then Yumi pulls out her
trump card which is
contesting close calls. By disrupting the flow of the game she reduces her opponents confidence which allows her to regain her own composure.
Using this strategy,
Yumi manages to defeat Chihaya by 4 cards. Oh shit!
Shit's getting real!!

The talks about Ms. Yamamoto and P&SwG reminded me that she also directed a very good (sisterly emotional) episode on said series.

It's an impressive balancing act for sure. I am certain that Nadia would be a much more fondly remembered and recommended series if it wasn't for the presence of the unforgivable island episodes. Even though you could and should watch the series without experiencing them the work has still been permanently tainted by them.
Definitely. GAiNAX couldn't oppose to NHK decision of making those episodes, but at least that made them wary of the necessity in attaining some control over the rights of following shows. That was the case of Neon Genesis Evangelion... and milking it they came back with a vengeance!

We have episode titles and brief synopsis for the first two episodes of Fujiko. It looks like they're going for an episodic series instead of an on-going arc. Probably for the best.
I love that and find it the more apt approach, however there is still a central plot (Fujiko's infiltration in a cult organization, that you also mentioned) and scenes from the promotional video seemed to correspond with that, so... given the number of episodes maybe we are talking about a little introduction arc, focused on this series' Fujiko, before the main quest, isn't it?

RurouniZel

ahh... true. But still... Harima might be one of the best characters around in animu.

Anyone that skipped this... should probably watch it.

Has ton of awesome themes ;P

School Rumble was fucking hilarious! Harima is an awesome protagonist! ^^

Are animators hourly paid or salaried?

Tamayura OVA - 1 & 2

The two new girls' entrance into the main cast was great. Whistling-moe girl Maon instantly makes any flow of conversation much cuter with her whistles, and Norie's infatuation with Kou is super hnnnngh. Actually, Kou himself is so damned adorable. His quiet yet playful personality (when he gets a hold of Fu with his legs is :lol) is :cajun :cajun

Oh yeah, and Fu's ecstacy-mode is so damned cuteee (I'm running out of adjectives for the word cute). The way her face instantly turns into a palette of pleasure, and her random yet cute dances are awesome.

Second episode also introduced Shihomi, who is Fu's idol and a professional photographer. It was great to see the energy in their conversation, which also showed their genuine love of photography. That moment where Fu kept confirming that Shihomi isn't lying about Fu's photos being terrible was damn hilarious.

Also, the OP and ED are so much better than the TV versions, especially the ED!

Momoneko > Kyubei

Edit: Oh yeah, was that Nakata Jouji voicing the photo store's manager?!

It's interesting that no one has provided a proper rebuttal to my opinion that the first episode is a poor introduction to the series. Why should I watch it, when I don't see any reason to, and no one else has provided a good reason beyond, "omg your opinion sucks Cowboy Bebop > Envelope."

I'll watch it someday, but it's pretty low on my backlog priority list at the moment. :3

So I watched the Bokura ga Ita movie (which incidentally is based on anime/manga) and I enjoyed it quite a bit. Apparently the first movie covers everything the anime covers and the 2nd movie will cover the manga until the end.

The actress playing Nanami is sufficiently ditzy as to convey the character pretty well. I was afraid they wouldn't be able to do the character but it kinda works (unlike the KnT movie where the actress didn't feel like Sawako at all).

Its basically your standard shoujo with all the various twists and turns. The ending is happy enough to basically be an ending and open ended enough to make you want to watch the 2nd movie.

Will check this out.

I just started Hana Kimi by the way. Good shit.

after
her loss to the former Queen, Chihaya locks herself in a closet and mopes
Taichi tries
to get her to come out, and news that their Sensei advanced to the third round gets Chihaya to come out. Taichi realizes that he has fallen for Chihaya.
D'awwww.
Later on, Chihaya gets asked out on a date. Taichi blocks the new guys number and makes it
BLATANTLY OBVIOUS
that he likes her. However only Kana can see it, because Kana is awesome like that.
they get news that Arata has also lost in the fourth round. Arata has now returned to Karuta and vows to practice all the time to get back to form. the group goes to watch the finals matches where the Queen and Master hopefuls play in one final effort to earn the right to battle the current ones. Chihaya questions herself and why she isn't playing here now. On the positive side of things, it appears that one of Sensei's students is a finalist.
Everyone decides to take a Christmas break from Karuta and enjoy life with their friends and classmates.

I'm pumped for godtamina. Just a few minutes to go!

Revolutionary Girl Utena 3

My feelings about this are kind of like my feelings about Penguindrum at this stage. I'm still having a hard time figuring out what to make of this show. If it weren't so highly recommended, I could see myself becoming bored and leaving it.

I still don't like Chuchu that much, and I sometimes feel like the art/budget is really lacking, like with the dancing at the end of the episode. But the central mysteries of the show, and the strength of Utena's character, make me want to know what's going on. And Ikuhara's direction is great as always.

I guess it's easy to get impatient when I'm watching at such a slow pace.

Episode 3 was my least favorite out of the 8 episodes I've watched so far.

Stick with it. you'll be glad you did.
Even if you end up not liking it, it's something very very different from anything you've ever watched before.
