How am I meant to play Crysis 2?

You make some good points. But for me kbam is the only input method that allows me to get immersed. I always remember that I have a controller in my hand. kbam feels like it's connected directly to my brain stem. Movement and aiming just happens.

Yea. I mean I spend so much time with a mouse and keyboard (all day at work and most of my spare time) that it's just a natural extension of my hands. Controllers just feel so cludgy.

Strangely enough, unlike Crysis 1...Crysis 2 actually gets better when the aliens show up. Just keep playing the game and it will come to you. One of the few games I started a second run right after I finished.

You really should play Crysis 1 first, since it's actually a much better and less linear game. Also the utterly idiotic story in Crysis 2 makes even less sense without the context provided by the first game.

This is how you're supposed to play the Crysis games. It's unfortunate that they gimped the suit so bad for Crysis 2 but that should still give you a good idea.

You aren't supposed to be "stealthy" or "rambo" or whatever archetype you're thinking. The idea is to blend all the abilities of the suit together to become a ridiculous killing machine.

I can't seem to do anything but be stealthy in Crysis 1. Armor mode feels useless in 1. I loved the power and flexibility of the suit in 2. I was able to blend styles really well. I prefer 2 by a bit because of that but I must say that Crysis 1 on Delta is proving to be a lot of fun for the stalking/stealth type gameplay. Here's hoping that Crysis 3 strikes a good balance between the two previous games.

Man, I got pretty far into this but got so bored I ended up just stopping. Playing on the highest difficulty too. The aliens that just charge you aren't fun to fight at all and I'm bored during most encounters.

That barrel explosion was so amazing.

you need to do stealth melee takedowns on EVERY enemy. all of them, no exceptions.

I couldn't do it, I resorted to a pop in and out of stealth method to pop off single headshots on my victims, poor bastards never saw it coming.
No you don't.

Yes, you do. Have you even played Crysis 2? It's pretty clear that's what's required.

I've clocked like 60 hours in Crysis 2. I use stealth kills minimally.

It's not "required" at all.

Hell go watch Nanosuit Ninja's vids and you can see this.

Thanks to this thread I started a second play-through with the DX11 patch. This game almost seems better the second time. I haven't played since I beat it at launch though.

Look the human enemies in this game may be assholes and idiots, but they're not the real enemy, the Ceph are. Stealth past every human foe, only kill when you absolutely have to. Meanwhile kill every single Ceph you can find and eat their sweet sweet jelly goo for powerup points - including the levels where they will keep spawning for several minutes.

We need to go over your settings. I remember you saying a 570 was enough to pull off 60fps, so I figure my 6970 should be able to.

To the OP, use cloaking to get out of tight spots and get enemies to lose track of you. You should use armor mode and cover as much as possible. The point is really to play like is shown in the opening cinematic, I think.

Well now I'm using 2x 570's (@ 580 speeds) so I never drop below 60. If you want to get 60 and have amazing quality, use a mix of Extreme and Ultra. Ultra everything except Post Processing, Shaders, and Water. Also lower LOD and view distance a bit using MaldoHDV3's config tool.

Hey guys, any of you playing Crysis 2 with 16gb of ram?

I recently went from 8gb to 16gb and Crysis 2 crashes on me within a few minutes of starting a level! This is the only game i have that seems to do this following my upgrade. The only other thing i upgraded was the SSD hard drive i installed. Btw I'm playing on Origin.

I'd suggest treat it as a run & gun corridor shooter except any time you have an open area and your suit tells you that tactical options are available. Check these out and you will understand the playstyle options the area has been designed around.

I will note stealth is possible but variable and level by level the AI's ability to detect you no matter how stealthy you're being is all over the place. I remember a few levels where even if I was cloaked and creeping behind a wall when I reached a trigger point all the enemies detected me and opened fire because I was supposed to fight my way through - so much for my nanosuit's abilities and player freedom.

I found it solid FPS fun overall - but run & gun with parital stealth orientated (i.e engage the enemy, stealth to move to another location, re-engage the enemy, rinse and repeat)

Stealth's effectiveness was seriously downgraded from the original Crysis.

The suit's overall versatility took a hit tbh.

A game could have the greatest music ever composed on the menu but over time it kills me. I'd prefer just some ambient noises or something on the menu.

That being said I love the menu music on Crysis 2 but it will become annoying after a while.
That was one of the brilliant touches of the Halo series, I thought. They used a whole series of different soft music tracks on the main menu mixed with bits of ambient noise. It smoothly faded between each of these selections and prevented it from ever feeling repetitive.

Stealth's effectiveness was seriously downgraded from the original Crysis.
Really? In the original any action you took would immediately disable stealth. At least in Crysis 2 you could squeeze off a couple rounds without draining energy. There were a lot of hit and run tactics necessary in the first game. It worked OK, but I always thought it could have been better.

like a console game.

Seeing that video above makes me really want a gaming PC, maybe when I leave university and have a decent wage.

If you're playing stealthy, don't hit reload checkpoint when you're discovered. Let your playthrough flow organically. Once you start adding your own arbitrary goals ontop of those of the game, you're lowering the chances of something unique and interesting happening.

That should be said about most games though.

i won't argue that the game looks amazing, but it was streamlined to hell.

Crysis 1 is my favorite single player game in the past 7 years.

yeah, the first one is the best single player fps game i've ever played.

just tried to play crysis 2 again yesterday, still cant make it past about 1.5hrs into it, easily the most disappointing game i've ever played :(

I can't even tell wtf you're trying to say here.

Protip guys, he's not literally suggesting that the rules of the game are such that you cannot proceed to the end without actively stealth killing every single enemy. He may be employing such advanced rhetorical techniques as exaggeration to imply that this is the most satisfying or easiest way to play.

You were doing it wrong! Engage stealth mode, aim for a headshot, switch it off, shoot, quickly switch it back on. You'll still have loads of cloak left.

I always played Crysis as a mix of action and stealth, but I found in Crysis 2 stealth was harder. It was more of an action game because there wasn't a lot of foliage to hide in etc. It's one of the many reasons why it's so inferior to the original.

If you mean hiding behind stuff yes, if you mean avoiding or sneaking around enemies then no, it's probably way easier in 2 than it was in 1. More interior or tightly packed areas combined with the possibility of upgrades for cloak efficiency and energy recharge speed meant that the cloaking was extremely OP to the point of being almost absurd.

Maybe you're right. I've only played 2 once, but I finished the original several times.

Stealth was more satisfying in the original I found, maybe I should have said. I never felt like such a bad ass when I was using stealth in 2. It always felt cheap.

I'm currently doing a Delta playthrough of Crysis and it really highlights how amazing stealth in that game is. Maybe I'll do one of Crysis 2 after to try stealth more.

Game looks great, but plays like... an average mediocre shooter...

So how are you supposed to play it? With graphical mods and dx11 support patch of course!
Crysis 2 is great at showing off what your top-notch PC can do to your friends and make them jealous.

I did a Delta run for my playthrough of C2 (which I only finished once, although I did replay a few of my favorite levels after I hit the credits), it basically had me cloaking 90% of the time. It wasn't as satisfying as my C1 delta runs for sure, although stealthing is very easy. In some areas you can just cloak and run past loads of enemies, particularly near the ending.

See I never do that because you're not really playing then! It's like using noclip or whatever. In the original Crysis I love using stealth but I ALWAYS use it to clear out an area. There's never anyone left alive because I'm sneaking in the bushes, taking a quick headshot, cloaking and moving to another area etc etc. It's possible to avoid 90% of enemies in the original too but then you're not having any fun.

In Crysis 2 I found that stealth was always just standing invisible. There's no prone, no deep foliage, so it basically meant I was running around a corner or standing still in cloak mode until a guard turned around. I went from being a predator bad ass to just abusing a mechanic. Zzzzz.

Man, the more I talk about Crysis 2 the more it annoys me that game was such an unworthy sequel.

This man gets it.

..at least for the playstyle you should adhere to on the hardest difficulty setting. Supersolider is a breeze though, especially with your suit fully upgraded. It's practically too easy.

I like the ability to ignore enemies and proceed to an objective, because it makes the fiction about you being a special forces guy much more believable. You're not just being sent in to kill dudes, and in many cases killing them is entirely secondary to achieving some goal (e.g. gathering intel, infiltrating a mine, disabling a GPS scrambler). The ability to avoid combat by swimming around the island to find another entrance is the kind of thing that needed to be encouraged in the level design, but stuff like that got sacrificed for the tighter levels in C2. I'm glad that cloaking past enemies is still a feature, but I'm also sad that some of the other ways to infiltrate, escape and evade etc are no-longer prominently featured.

This is not to say C1 is even close to being perfect, because as we all know it degenerates rapidly once the aliens show up. I think C2 is a much more consistent ride than C1 was, which had some really high highs and then some really low lows. At least the aliens were enjoyable to fight in C2.

I've used that trick in Crysis, but I still think it's slightly clunky. I absolutely love Crysis 1 and feel it's one of the best shooters ever made, but I much prefer the way the suit works in Crysis 2. It feels much more polished and well integrated.

Two steps forward, one step back IMO. Integrating strength mode functionality into other modes was a good change, eliminating speed mode was a terrible one.

Yeah, the gimping of speed really made me hate the new suit in 2. Nothing like zipping through the trees in Crysis.

In 2 it's just a COD style sprint.

I have 16GB of RAM and never had this issue. Went from 8GB to 16 like you too.

Eh, speed mode as present in Crysis 1 wasn't really necessary for the level design in Crysis 2.

Is that the one that replaces all the textures with stuff from google image search that doesn't fit at all, and all of the fake ads with terrible quality images of HAWT BABES?

Because nobody should install that one. Vanilla or the texture pack is the way to go.
If you have an ATI card, this mod fixes the performance problems related to Tesselation. Also fixes a lot of the graphics in the game as far as I can see. I don't remember the hawt babe ads though

i've played through it twice.

The stealth is pretty broken and yeah, sometimes enemies seem to spawn infinitely.

I used to just sneak past all enemies with the broken invisibility and stealth kill anyone in my way. Then just crouch behind a car for a minute to recharge and move again.

There is no rewards for no-kills or any real incentive to play stealthily.

So yeah, i recommend don't kill anyone you don't need to, keep moving.

If a game allows you to play it in different ways then there's no right or wrong way to play it. I liked to pretend I was a Predator when playing it.

I didn't kill a single enemy in the assault on the floating island until I was forced to at the very end. It wasn't rewarding at all. The "stealth" is so piss-easy that there's no real satisfaction in doing it. Fortunately, the combat is fun, and the game itself is gorgeous. Big fan overall.
