Enough to provide a higher ROI than BBS?

You're asking a question that can't be answered. Did KH3D cost more to make from the move to a new system? Did it cost less by being able to reuse the assets and engine that was developed for the PSP title? For the sake of argument, I'll call it a wash (though I highly suspect BBS cost significantly more to make) which still makes the answer to your question 'yes'

One can say that 3DS was the best bet for a Osaka-developed KH spinoff starting development in early 2010 and still think that the game bombed hard.

Because frankly, after watching KH 358/2 sell that good for such a mediocre game I would also think about putting my next game with PS2 quality assets and to be released ~2 years later on the next Nintendo handheld before making another PSP game (no one thought PSP would be alive in 2012 and it is barely alive and only in Japan) or the next Sony portable, which wasn't going to be released anytime soon.

Days and CoM also had a very positive track record in the US and KH is a very western franchise to begin with.

Make game, lose money on the game, make even more games to lose even more money, some logic you have there boss.

Do you really think Capcom and Square Enix lost / will lose their money on Resident Evil Revelations and Kingdom Hearts 3D? No way. The former has been taken under Nintendo's wing in the West, so Capcom did not have any promotion cost, while the latter it could still manage to sell a million world-wide, given the strength of the franchise in North America. Btw, yes, even though they did not see huge numbers, it's the basis where to start to build a dedicated userbase. I mean, Revelations is the first serious effort of the series on a handheld system; it shared development cycle with The Mercenaries (which sold mode than 400k world-wide), it's perfect for a follow-up that has the chances to sell better given the great response from video gamers.

Not really. Nintendo games have always done great on handheld with their core franchises. MH can be put on PSP and sell way more than what it has done so far (opps it already did that)

On PSP, but without having any kind of possibility in the West (Nintendo will surely handle Monster Hunter 3G localization) and without having the possibility of building a fanbase on a new console + 3G is the expansion of Tri, which was a Wii exclusive, probably coming out from an agreement with Nintendo so we would have seen hardly on another platform.

Besides, it's very, very likely that 3G would never have existed as a PSP title. I think its primary purpose was to transition a large portion of the MH fanbase to the 3DS well in advance of MH4.

So apparently my japanese buddy who's a fan of the series didn't pick up KH "because the Nintendo's (?) Kingodm Hearts are awful and he wasted money on them".
Like I've said earlier in this thread, a friend in Japan of mine said the same. I'm seriously beginning to wonder if the ground is salted.

There was so much optimism over KIU and KH3D. Bawww.

3DS hardware sales have been strong, but software sales have been somewhat disappointing. Except for the trinity, those are some crazy legs.

I think you're right in Capcom's intentions. It was an oursourced port (8ing) with extra stuff (ported 3rd content) that Capcom expected pretty modest sales from (1.2m). MH4 is the game they'll be expecting 3rd style sales from (and be putting 3rd style effort into), 3G doing better than planned is just a bonus.

Apart from Dead or Alive Dimensions, Ace Combat and maybe Tekken, I didn't see big bombas on 3DS so far.

The few 3DS games with bigger opening are MK7, SM3DL, and MH3G. All 3 franchises are much bigger than KH.

So? It's not like either of these games had userbase problems to sell.

The userbase excuse is silly. The game would not have sold a lot more on any other platform.

Ugh, the transition to this new generation of portables has not been a particularly smooth one so far :I Hope DDD can net some good sales in the West but I have my doubts.

Why bother with building a franchise when you can make more elsewhere? Doesn't make business sense. Also MH3G will sell less than MHtri in the west, western audience will hate the claw.

Because software houses don't live with just one entry per franchise anymore; they tend to diversify their line-up, and 3DS installed base is growing more and more world-wide. Why don't exploit such hardware numbers with low-cost quality games and create a nice environment to rely on?

Kid Icarus is doing...pretty well. At least for now. Most games have a 70-75% drop in their second week, while Kid Icarus had a 65% drop, that's good. It should bode well for its performance in the long time.

I think what's more important is that it's now sold through its initial shipment, which was somewhere around 170k.

Apparently higher install base has little to no bearing on achieving higher software sales anymore. I'm glad we have finally come to this consensus here in this topic.

We will keep this in mind when analyzing the future software sales of the 3DS, Vita, WiiU, PS4 and 720. I can't wait to tell my old statistics professor at Purdue. That was always a major variable when assessing the sell through potential of any medium. The "early adopter plays more games" variable cancels most all of that out undoubtedly.

Of course this didn't change the fact that MHtriG only sold a fraction of MHP3's numbers at launch. The chances of D3 continuing to sell as 3DS install base continues to grow, just like TriG/MK7/M3DS are, is an obviously ridiculous expectation for the Kingdom Hearts series of games.

Kingdom Hearts is not that big a surprise. The story is so heavily linked between the games, that it's alienating for new audiences. With a series like that, sales can only go one way, and if one entry is disappointing as a game, it's going to take miracles for the next entry to sell better.

Oh, so Pro Baseball Spirits did give PSV a small, but relatively significant bump.

Not that surprised by KH3D vs BbS. Wonder how S-E feel about it. At least there was a hardware bump.

I'd think both hardware bumps probably have less to do with these specific games and more to do with the other manufacturer promotionsgoing right now (bundles, colors, price drops).

For PSV - do you mean the 4GB memory bundling? I thought that only began post-this reporting period.

I'm not sure what promotion began for 3DS during this reporting period either - colors? game bundles?

You're right, the 3DS bundles started a week earlier and Vita bundle/drop just started. So maybe it was PBS and KH3D?

The 3DS (5.52m sold-through) is surpassing the N64 (5.54m shipped) this week.

This (below) happened last week:

3DS has 8 weeks to start averaging 180k/week:

But that's why KH3D has a million (optional) cutscenes of Sora/Riku standing still in a room while someone explains a term from a previous game for 5 mins!

I'm not expecting FFIII numbers, but FFIVr numbers seem reasonable enough if the push and quality is there.

That is crazy crackers.

I think this is basically accurate. I am pretty skeptical of the idea that most of the Kingdom Hearts fanbase gives a shit about the "story" at all; I would guess most people want to look at fancy Disney worlds and see cool Disney/Square mashup stuff (like the keyblade knights from the KH2 secret ending) but couldn't care less about Xehanort, Nobodies, the power of true hearts, or sea salt ice cream.

Anyone expecting bbs numbers for ddd was crazy and even days numbers would've been a little ambitious, overall i'd say it did solidly with smidgin of dissapointing, hopefully with the 3ds userbase growing rapidly it may have decent legs especially with golden week coming up soon but we will see

I agree with this. Look at the 3DS hardware bump, ~30k units we could say was for KH. That is a huge percentage compared to the actually sell-through of the game. That tells me that a large majority of the KH fanbase either didn't buy the game and/or doesn't have a 3DS.

Only two things will save KHDDD from having only a ~450K LTD is good WOM and increasing 3DS sales.

KI didn't do too bad this week.

The major difference now being that weakened Nintendo sales (3DS) are proving higher than PlayStation sales (Vita) for most 3rd party franchises. Musou, Tales, Ridge Racer; pretty much everything that traditionally sold better on PS platforms has been performing worse on Vita than on 3DS. I think this week's Pro Yakyuu Spirits is the first exception.

Tales actually proves otherwise

3DS got port of Abyss released years ago which was one of biggest and most famous Tales games with full length anime not so long ago.

Vita got port of much smaller and recent Tales game from DS

And with half of userbase Vita Tales sold about 2/3 (+unknown number online) of 3DS ToA

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
