Peter Molyneux: Why I quit Microsoft, and why my new game will change the world

You keep acting like anyone with some firm criticism about this guy is some crazy rabid internet nutjob which deserves to be mocked.

I already have said that there is things about him and his games you can criticize, and that I consider Fable 3 to be one the worst games I played. But people has taken this to far, and I think that people should be careful with using the term liar. If people call him crap, well, he has made some real crap games, no doubt about it.

But whenever he´s name is mentioned people just scream "liar" and start posting the same gifs over and over, before trying to understand what the articles even are about.

If you think that I have an extreme view of one side of the story, dont put yourself in the opposite extreme corner and think that you´re any better, please.

Peter is one of those dudes you just want have a couple of beers with. He always seems so kind and passionate and it's probably really fun to shoot ideas around with him. That said, he I consider it highly unlikely that he will make something truly worthwhile any time soon. I just think his creative visions are too broad and therefor he will always fail on execution.

Well first of all more funding but if you take TGC as an example, they were a small start-up indie dev that Sony not only funded, built up but also gave them help with coding the games through SSM without actually dictating what kind of games they should do. That sort of thing could help any starting dev.

More funding? Not sure what you base that on, Molyneux is fucking loaded. If Sony would do with him like that game company then of course that would be cool, but would still much prefer him and 22cans to stay independent and be able to do whatever they want, with Sony you would still be locked into only ps3/4 and psp, would be cool to see Molyneux go back to pc gaming again.

"Really? Worst videogame you ever saw...Well, my next one will be awesome ! Hello. Hello ?"

I like the idea of a more indy Peter too. This way he can maybe focus on his own ideas rather being forced to make a big game where there is no real place for his ideas being squeezed in.

And I already explained to you that I'm not using the term lightly.
I honestly think that given his track record, he plenty deserves to be called "liar".
I'm not that much into nerdrage-induced rants and hyperbolic statements, for the record.
I'm very calm and very confident in what I'm saying.

This post I'm writing will change neogaf forever. The sheer magnificence of my writing will have an eternal impact on this forum, will change people's lives and perception of reality while it will make others weep with pure joy or call their parents just to say "I love you". So here it goes!

I think I really need to finish my book...so many misconceptions about the guy.

Great interview Eurogamer, nice to see Peter speak like a normal non-corporate monkey.

Remember when mgs4 was going to have a dynamic world around you affected by the player? This guy isn't the only "liar" aka person with grand ideas for their game before the hardware specs squash em.

Always liked the man, as underwhelming as his games sometimes turned out to be.
Keep on shooting for the moon, Peter.
I suppose he seems like a nice guy, but he's just so full of shit. I've never known someone repeatedly fall flat on their face after writing cheques their ass can't cash. You'd think he'd learn by now.
Why can't he just be, "Yeah, my new game is pretty cool. It's a light RPG with a whimsical fairytale aesthetic." Instead of, "well my new game will actually be able to feel your tension levels through the pad. Also, it is easily the best, most innovative and most super amazing game, lyk, ever!"

You're writing a book on Peter/Lionhead? Interested.

Oh he was serious? Interesting for sure.

So you have not read it either.

Sometimes I genuinely believe the man should be protected from his own mouth and what comes out of it. He does seem like a nice guy though.

Well it's Sam who was their community manager for a really long time, so doubt he's trolling or anything. Super cool dude, let a 16 year old me sleep on his couch when I visited Lionhead with some other forum members. Peter was btw super cool there too, showed us around the studio and sat down to do interviews for the fan sites and stuff.

It's great that he's ambitious, but all I see are a bunch of generic and very broad ideas that most likely won't go anywhere.

Maybe Microsoft was the problem. I'm interested to see how this all turns out. Jokes aside, his ideas all sounded really fun and cool.

Well peter you can spout so many duds that i can't take you seriously anymore

IMO you lost something when making black & white and you haven't recovered it

Even after everything you've done, dammit I still love you Peter. If you promise never to hurt me again I will believe you.

Is it admirable for someone to dream up ideas way beyond their ability to deliver? - Maybe.

Is it admirable for someone to publicise these ideas as achievable in full knowledge they can't deliver? - No.

Yeah, I really hope people are joking a bit when they're taking jabs at a guy like Molyneux. He deserves to be made fun of for promising so goddamned big, but there are few of his kind that ever could dream up what he has regardless of how much actually ends up in the final box... and he's also put an awful goddamned lot inside of boxes in his career!

His interviews and lectures and dream-sharing may not necessarily be worth a pre-order (wait for previews/reviews before buying and re-orient your expectations after following a Molyneux project for too long,) but it's all sure worth a listen.
Yeah, actually we should be glad that Pete is still around.

He overpromised features in Fable 1, backed down about them before the release, apoligized in an open letter afterwards. Then what? How has he shown that he´s a compulsive liar after that?

I´m not saying that everything he has done afterwards is good. Fable 2 was lacking in some aspects (not open enough, no stealth) and Fable 3 was complete crap, but there is a difference between making a bad game and being a compulsive liar?

Gaming age is obnoxious when it comes to Molyneux.

Molyneux is a guy with a lot of great ideas. And he's so enthusiastic about games. So when he's not being watched and monitored by a PR flack, you can really have a great conversation with him about all sorts of things.

Unfortunately, the problem is that people on gaming age don't realize that when a developer speaks of an in-game feature, he's speaking of something he may not be able to put into his game. Game development is an endless series of compromises -- you have to deal with hardware limitations, time restrictions, manpower restrictions, etc. In-game features are subject to revision and cutting for a thousand different reasons.

I always laugh when people here act wounded over Fable. As if their enjoyment of the game was somehow dampened because it didn't feature realistically growing trees. No offense, but trees don't grow very fast. And their growth isn't particularly entertaining.

Are you actually asking to me to do some internet archive research for you, just to convince your illustrious person that the man lies with surprising regularity?
Um, yes? You seem to be spending enough of your quality time posting a great deal in this thread about just how much of a compulsive liar he has been, perhaps you should use some of that time to convince us or else your accusations over promise but fail to deliver (tee hee). I see you haven't shied away from listing missing features from the original Fable, or even to do some internet archive research to find a quote of his. But for someone who lies so often, you do seem to struggle to come up with even a couple of clear cut examples where he lied about the development of Fable 2 and 3.

The way I see it, after Fable 1 Molyneux simply spoke about features with passion, flair and hyperbole. I'm failing to think of many, if any times he outright lied about the existence of a feature in Fable 2 and 3. A feature might have been a disappointment after his grandiose explanation of it, or perhaps you even think the entire game sucked, but that doesn't make his passion for the game he was making a lie. He just didn't produce a game that could match his vision (or perhaps it did and the idea itself simply wasn't very good). And that is far from uncommon in this industry. Skyrim, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 3, GTAIV, Alan Wake, FFXIII, GT5... how many games this generation alone have under delivered to some people or simply have missing features and don't match the ambition that was so clear in previews and interviews?

I love Peter Molyneux. Don't love all his games but enough of them were great that I'm going to give him a pass for the rest of his career. I wish The Movies did better. I understand some of the expansions that were cancelled were going to add a lot to the game.

Change the world? LOL! Oh Peter...

How could anyone be still be naive enough to believe anything that's coming out of that man's mouth is beyond me...

You´re not the first one to ask that question, and there is already a discussion around that going on? Do you want us to start over everytime someone ask that question, or could you perhaps catch up a bit? :)

Yeah I'm serious! I've known Peter for what, 14 years now. We've been very close friends for most of that time. Don't know if there's a lot of interest out there, but it's something I've been working on for little under a year now.

You're too kind. What a night that was when you all crashed at my place! ;)

A lot less people would have been banned if Molyeux wasn't in the game industry..

I wonder who will publish his games, and what systems he is interested in, PC only?

You reap what you sow. If he wouldn't go around running his mouth with all the bullshit that rolls out of it, he wouldn't get such vitriol responses. I have no sympathy for this guy and understand the reaction he's getting.

Interesting. While he was working for Microsoft it was the second coming of Christ on anything he would say here on neogaf.

I understand why he´s getting it, I just think that people have taken waaaaaay to far now. And that people who posts the same gifs in every thread about him, and write the same oneline answers about lying aren´t quite as clever as they might think they are. :)

I wonder who will publish his games, and what systems he is interested in, PC only?

He wouldn´t say that their first project is going to be PC exclusive, but he more or less confirms that it will be developed for the PC primarly.

They haven´t decided about publishers yet. He says that they have talked to Microsoft, but wants to talk with many others before deciding.

I'm sorry, did I ask a question? I fail to see the part where I asked a question. Could you please point it out to me? I quoted the thread's title, then made my opinion known. I don't see where I asked a question, nor did I ask anyone to follow up on it. And if we can no longer simply express our opinions on this board, then what the fuck is the point?

Expressing opinions is fine. However, 80% is offtopic since the first "dont beleive his lies" pic (which is fairly old btw.) was posted without any connection to the interview whatsoever.

You wondered how anyone can be naive enough to believe anything he says, and you post that right in the middle of a discussion about that very subject, in it´s third page, so yeah, that´s bound to be interpreted as a question. Opinions are fine, of course, but sometimes it´s wise to see where the threads discussion actually stands.

And? Anything I said has nothing to do with the picture that was posted or anything anyone has said in this thread. It was my personal opinion based on my past experience with this guy's claims vs. the end result, which has deceived me every. single. time. The defense force in this thread.. sheesh.
