Wii U Speculation Thread The Third: Casting Dreams in The Castle of Miyamoto

2.65 millions, to be precise. That's with a big marketing campaign and the 'Wii' brand behind it at the height of its popularity. It was a bad concept with limited appeal.

I would say that Wii Music is actually the cause of tHe decline in Wii's general public perception.

I think its more a really good concept with some poor execution, and yeah compared to other wii__ games its sales look shit (except wiichess lol) but 2.65 million sales is nothing to be sniffed at

Former Free Radical Design, former Rare people, former creator of Timesplitters. These guys are awesome if you just forget about Haze. And they will be using CryEngine 3.x, presumably.

All this dampened by the high probability that they're not working on Timesplitters 4, or indeed anything that isn't Homefront 2.

Sure, those numbers would be very impressive for just about any other game, but imagine how people would react if the next CoD sells 2.65 million. No one would say, 'you know, that's still really high'. They'd be wondering what the hell went wrong.

Is Crysis 3 coming to WiiU?

I'd love it to. Using the padlet to configure my weapons or being the zoom for my rifles would be amazing. Use it as a Xray scanner for seeing combatants behind walls. Having the screen completely huddles. Bring it on.

Like I said in the other thread, I think Homefront 2 is the only game Crytek is making for Wii U. I have a nagging feeling that we won't see Crysis 3 on Wii U. They probably don't have a free team to make that version.

Unlike each COD game where each game should have consistent appeal and thus sell consistently the wii__ games all have different appeal and thus selling different amounts (but all being multimillion sellers) should be expected, a better comparrisson would be with guitar hero and i believe wiimusic sold similar to any of the individual platform versions of gh

Random thought:-

I wonder if you'll be able to buy custom covers for the padlet?

As long as Homefront 2 has an awesome mapmaker and is some sort of well-designed, sarcastic shooter with clever plot twists and at least 3 player local multi, I'm in.

Considering how well WSR sold, I think you are wrong.

Well, it could be argued that Wii Sports Resort represented a staggering decline in popularity for the Wii Sports series.

That would be a pretty terrible argument. WSR has sold 30 million copies which is a fantastic result by any sensible metric. You can't compare it with a game that was a forced bundle for several years.

Oh, I rather agree. It's why I wasn't making the argument. ;D

WSR did feel kind of like a last hurrah to me, though. I think it was principally because Nintendo didn't continue to push Wii Motion Plus save for a very select few games.

Y'all need to come off it; you can't have your cake and eat it.

It's good to take pride in the fact that some people around here have connections and are in the know.

But when they come here and dump info through their own volition, it's fair game. You can't take this odd sort of high ground certain people are trying to hold on to. It just makes GAF look collectively a bit unstable and creepy (I know, I know).

Yeah. In the one region where we can compare unbundled vs unbundled it was a step down, but I don't know that this would be staggering.

The biggest problem with WSR/M+ is that they arrived about a year later than they should have.

Or that they played their cards a year early. They didn't need to preemptively present it at that E3, but they thought that Microsoft or Sony was going to introduce something similar, and they wanted to get their foot in the brainshare door first.

Oh, don't get me wrong. I am offended as a journalist.

First thing they should have done is contact me and whether I give up the goose or tell them to fuck off, that due diligence is important. Then they at least tried.

But this is the...third, I think, time this has happened for different rumors and usually they just run it straight off my posts. Investigating your sources is important, even if you come up with nothing~

Minor update on the trademark problems: Trademark no 010391415, "Wii U", was registered (not applied) yesterday. Unfortunately, this particular (figurative) trademark doesn't concern Wii U as a video game console, but as the following:

Nice Classification: 18
Handbag frames; purse frames; horseshoes; industrial packaging containers of leather; clothing for domestic pets; bags and the like; pouches and the like; vanity cases [not fitted]; umbrellas and their parts; walking sticks; canes; metal parts of canes and walking-sticks; handles of canes and walking-sticks.

Nice Classification: 25
Clothing; garters; sock suspenders; suspenders [braces]; waistbands; belts for clothing; footwear; clothes for sports; boots for sports [other than "horse-riding boots"]; masquerade costumes.

Nice Classification: 30
Coffee and cocoa; tea; confectionery, bread and buns; instant confectionery mixes; chinese stuffed dumplings [Gyoza, cooked]; sandwiches; chinese steamed dumplings [Shumai, cooked]; sushi; fried balls of batter mix with small pieces of octopus [Takoyaki]; steamed buns stuffed with minced meat [Niku manjuh]; hamburgers (sandwiches); pizzas; box lunches [prepared]; hot dogs (sandwiches); meat pies; ravioli; cube sugar; fructose [for food]; crystal sugar [not confectionery]; sugar; maltose [for food]; honey [for food]; glucose [for food]; powdered starch syrup [for food]; starch syrup [for food]; worcester sauce; meat gravies; ketchup; soy sauce [soya sauce]; vinegar; vinegar mixes; seasoning soy sauce (Soba-tsuyu); salad dressings; white sauce; mayonnaise; sauces for barbecued meat.

The opposition on the Wii U trademarks 010391134 (figurative) and 010377331 (word), made by England based company Information Technology Junction Limited on the 27th of January, is still ongoing though. I do not know at which stage the process is, but last time I checked it appeared OHIM was conducting an admissibility check (to see if the opposition is admissible). If this check is complete and the opposition is deemed admissible, the The "cooling-off" period begins. The proceedings start with a period during which parties can negotiate an agreement, the so-called "cooling-off" period. The cooling-off period expires two months from the notification of admissibility, but can be extended for up to 22 months.

I would assume the notification of admissibility is a public document, and so far it hasn't appeared in the CTM-ONLINE registry, meaning that the opposition probably hasn't been defined as anything yet. One could ask though if it really should take almost three months for such a check to complete.

Nevertheless, what I wanted to say with this is that it indeed seems Nintendo wants to keep the Wii U name. Of course could the registration be canceled, but then why not notify the OHIM at once that you are not interested in Wii U branded chinese stuffed dumplings?

The problem lies in that this is still just a forum. Any news that sites are using is now third hand at best, which in the normal world, would be dismissed out right.
Nothing against IdeaMan or Alberto, but they have stated over and over that they don't have 100% of the info or even close, and that a lot of what they say can't be taken as gosspil. Sites using their posts as news is rather pathetic at this point.

You know how we were talking about the difference between the way Sony's losses and the way Nintendo's losses will be reported by the gaming media? Well....

Sony's 4 billion loss isn't the disaster it seems, apparently...

No, it's still a disaster. Yes they have excuses, but they are still burning through billions like it's nothing. You don't survive doing that, regardless of your excuse.

Well said. Didn't that MS leak guy make up stuff or something earlier this year about Durango just to see if outlets would check sources? Blogs will jump on anything they see, be it GAF, Reddit, or whomever & make a post out of it.

At least it wasn't a major outlet that took your forum post.

Yeah, I read about that in the thread for it -- about half the loss is a weird tax credit charge thing that isn't related directly to actual profits.

The other half is still pretty huge, though. Kaz had better have an incredibly coherent forward-going plan that isn't "We'll leverage our brand and charge higher prices than the competition while locking people into proprietary accessories that would normally come with the product". These practices really hurt over the long run, I think.

I don't think it would have done very much better had the reveal been closer to release. Of course, I don't think they gained much by presenting it early, either.

Can't you have trademarks in two separate types of business at the same time? (edit: I am likely confusing various nebulous kinds of "IP" here)

Of course you can. This goes for Wii as well, it's even registered as "rental of humidifiers (for household purposes)". As for Wii U, handbag frames, purse frames and clothing are most important as that is something frequently traded with. There's of course Nintendo branded candy as well, which the Nice Classification 30 handles.

you know what I wanted to ask you but forgot, just out of curiosity. Are you sitting on any information that you CAN'T say for one reason or another? Or have you said everything you have heard?

I'm always sitting on something. But generally it's stuff that I don't understand (most technical mumbo jumbo) and would have a hard time relating, something I just don't have enough confidence in repeating, or things that would identify the people who told me.

It's mostly all just whispers here and there. Someone I know will say something like "I don't have direct access to the devkits, but the people who do told me this." Or "There was a staff meeting where so-and-so expressed frustrations with ____." Stuff like that.

It's an interesting position to be in, because even if someone is 100% telling you the truth, and even if everything they say is 100% true at the time, it's not always guaranteed to come to fruition. I am absolutely confident that Contra and Castlevania 3DS existed at one point, but Konami has not announced them or canceled them for whatever reason. Or like that set of TGS rumors from last year where literally everything came true, except Bayonetta 2.

So I try not to directly talk about games because, until it's announced, it does not exist. Hardware is generally less fluid. There are devkit revisions and such, but it seems unlikely that it will change that much.

But to answer your questions, if I am sitting on something, it's generally for a good reason.

I've never used my Wii as a humidifier before. Better start pouring water on it.

The RETURN OF THE CUBE HANDLE :D

Heard it first from Rösti :D If the handle is missing, you know who to blame ;) ;)

They can't keep the name Wii U, it will just cause confusion, just like the 3DS got when it launched.

Don't do the same mistake, Nintendo!
