The latter part of your post is kind of why it's a great song, though. It's not part of the regular J-pop idiom. I also like Yuki's lyrics - it's very much a song written with the show in mind.
Plus something like Tank wouldn't be appropriate for Apollon because it's the wrong style of jazz. It's not a big band show.
Obviously if the song's not to your taste that's not an issue, but it's not a bad song.
With regards to the OP itself, it's interesting to see some of the techniques that Nakazawa used in the 90s for his classic Lodoss TV OP again. In the second half the layered artwork and constant flowing movement is across the screen is particularly effective. Others have already remarked on the eye animation and the morphing faces which also particularly impressed me.
Yeah I don't think big band jazz style fits the mood or atmosphere of this particular show. the OP was fine for what the show is trying to be.

How do we even know whether a show is a financial success or not? SInce its not the Manabi line or whatever, what metrics are used?

Natsume S4, Ano Natsu de Matteru, and Daily Lives of High School Boys aren't bad at all. (Certainly they're all better than Rinne no Lagrange.) I'm far from one to support Japanese otaku's purchasing habits, but come on.

I mean, in all honesty I wouldn't buy any of the Winter shows, and i'm surprised they aren't lower.
Now this season has stuff that's good and deserves to sell.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone could help me find a certain anime that I can't remember the name of.
All I can recall is that it takes places in outer space, everyone dies, it's fairly old (70's or 80's, I think), and there used to be a ton of animated gifs from it. The one main gif I remember is some sort of firefight in outer space and everyone is wearing space suits and dies in all sorts of horrible ways (I think there's a scene of a child in a space suit getting his/hers head blown clean off).

I'm not sure why you're surprised. It's been pretty consistently demonstrated over the past decade that the artistic quality of anime has zilch to do with how well it sells. Unless you believe that Bakemonogatari was the best anime of the 2000s? I mean, even something as worthless as Infinite Stratos sold 30,000+.
Given the Japanese market, it's not as if most people are buying DVDs or BDs just because they want to rewatch the show. It's too expensive. They're buying them because they want to build up a collection.
Except for Fate/Zero, whatever you think is good from this season will probably not sell well.

I don't know, MGX has drool porn and panty shots, it's got alot more going for it than Apollon and Tsuritama at least.
E7AO could do 7-10k I think. Even Star Driver managed it. I'm sure all the Omigawa fans are already pre-ordering!
Fate/Zero S2 should do another 40-50k, no reason why everyone who bought the first box wouldn't buy the second.
Lupin is going to completely bomb I think. I expect <2k.
Apollon should be able to do 4-6k. I'm not sure if there's enough buying interest for it to sell more, but the CDs should sell a fair bit.
Tsuritama will probably bomb too. I expect <3k.
Not sure if they're even releasing SSO on blu-ray. Are they?
Hyouka is a tough call since I don't even know what to expect from the show. But I'm smelling a bomb because it's so different from normal KyoAni stuff, plus it's not Key.
AKB0048 is probably going to do very, very well if they don't fuck it up. Could easily see it being the next 20k show.
And those are all the shows I'm interested in this season. Let's see how right I am.

This isn't really that sort of show though. They don't go after any show just because it has possible homosexual undertones. There are specific things which make it attractive.

Well you're right about that. Those who did buy it are probably really likely to get the second one for the sake of completionism if nothing else.
As for AK0048, I really hope the actual anime art is better than the promo art. Somehow I doubt it though. I think we're stuck with a derpy future.

Unless they fuck it up, it will be pretty huge. Just include Character Song CDs in the LEs, and watch the money flow.
Also include a code for redeemable smartphone app that is an alarmclock with all the cast members recorded individually saying "WAKE UP ONII-CHAN!" so you can choose your favorite to wake up to every morning.

Sure, though I would like to see Tasogare succeed as well.
With the RKB and Fate Zero clocks, I can see this item becoming pretty ridiculously popular in the future. Its a good thing in my opinion.
