Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

In other news I'm now addicted to game of thrones.

as it should be.

and the CoD/Halo simultneaous release is pretty much two guys trying to escape the rain and getting at the door at the same time. No matter how polite you're, you're still gonna push yourself in. Wether it's first or second is irrelevant, what matters is both will squeeze to fit inside as soon as possible.

I mean MS doesn't have much choice, neither them nor Activision want to miss on Holiday sales, nor do they want to rush out the development of their flagship franchise.
So they 're gonna have to come out around the same time and deal with it.

When stripped down both Halo and CoD can be close to each other, devilishly close.

What does the thing on the AR look like a knife? The thing that sticks out on the side.
I.... I... am creeped out a little right now.
Just put him on ignore. It's what I did.

Regicide really sounds like one of those Bungie gametypes that are so much "crazy fun".

This is an interesting point. The "problem" is that game designers like games, not just videogames, but tabletop games, game systems, rule sets, card games, D&D and so on.

Game designers like when games have "interesting" rule sets, rules that make you play in a slightly different way: Hot Potato, Juggernaut, Regicide, VIP, Headhunter, 3 Plots, 1 flag vs 2 flag, Stockpile, Assaut vs Neutral Assault etc. Game designers love seeing the subtle changes in the way the game plays when you tweak the rules slightly, they're not BSing when they say that these modes are hellafun, as designers, these modes are hellafun. I too play a lot of card and boardgames and really enjoy interesting and intricate game rules, I also enjoy most of those modes I just mentioned.

The problem with this is that most Halo players just want to play Halo, they want to try and kill the other team more than the other team kills them. That's what they signed up for when they bought the game.

Modes like Regicide appeal to game designers or people who are interested in game systems and rulesets. They don't really appeal to people who just want an FPS.

This isn't intended as a slight on those who just want a straight FPS, just an observation that designers are perhaps designing modes for a fairly small section of their audience.

Small rule changes are relatively easy to do and test, so go for it i say. It is refreshing to play something else than standard Slayer/CTF/Assault at times. Or would be, if i didn't have to deal with shitty map desing and various other issues (King of the Hill on Sword Base, so wrong on so many levels (pun intended)).

I don't think it's necessarily a fight that MS will lose. Not on Xbox anyway. CoD will clearly sell more across all formats, but with good marketing Halo should be able to do better than CoD on 360.

Most CoD players I speak to are fairly tired of the game, it's just no-one is trying hard enough to entice them away.

Haven't CODs outsold both Halo 3 and Reach? Invidual CODs outselling invidual Halos i mean.

COD did peak at Black Ops, wasn't there a news about this a day or two ago?

As for enticing COD players... Battlefield 3 sure tries hard. Close Combat Map pack DLC, really? Doesn't play on BF's strenghts... COD players need something fast and smooth (60FPS does affect the feel a bit). But i wonder how much you can change the COD formula without alienating the players...

Nah. Halo 4 will sell a lot but Call Of Duty will sell more at the release.

Black Ops 1 sold more than MW3 since today. Still MW3 broke the launch sales of BO.

Ouch, no offense meant, yet I thought comparing CoD and Halo even to their release dates is pretty much as thoughtfull as checking asses.
yet we happily discuss boobs size, and the CoD/Halo comparison is boring outside saying Halo>CoD and Halo needs to be Halo.

If those two release on the same day, halo fans will get Halo 4 over CoD, other people will go CoD, like they did.
Declining sales does not mean CoD is going away, and Reach did not do a lot to enthrall new gamers.

I'm curious as to how gamestop will try to rip off customers if they release on the same day. Shotter Day campaign? Biggest gaming day of history? Added repurchase value if you get the two games together etc...

Those Cortana calculations.. caught me off guard. Impressive AND creepy.
These two series are big, will be big next christmas and if Gamestop gets to sell them on the same day, they can market it as the biggest gaming day of the year and start a specific used games campaign to profit from it, one way or another.
.... these games share market and userspace.
They will not gain from stepping on each others toes, at least not monetarily.

You would think so, but it could also stand to reason that the inherency of one game would promote interest in the other, if the market could support two blockbuster shooters, which it did last fall. There's also the interesting dynamic of one being the exclusive flagship franchise on a five year "main arc" hiatus.

I agree with you. Rich cool people play with one screen liek Richie Rich. Cool kids who are charitable play with 2 player split screen, like BJ McKay and his Best Friend Bear. Brady Bunch maniacs do four player split screen and I assume they fail at SWAT a lot. BUT - Halo 4 still supports four player split screen for MP - Brad was conflating co-op, I suspect.

What ALWAYS drove me crazy about Halo 4 player split screen (and still does when my roommates and I play 3-4 split screen) was the fact that you can barely see anything through the "player killed player2" text. I don't understand how nobody looked at that and decided to turn it off.
It is unnecessary information that covers a large amount of a screen already divided into four. I thought for sure that it would be gone in Reach. Frankie, please tell me you guys figured that out? I don't even need the text to be redesigned for the smaller screens, just gone woud be fine.

Halo 3 sold a lot more than Call of Duty 4 and WAW. BLOPS, MW2 and MW3 have sold better, but not by much, especially considering the bigger install base they have to sell to.

According to VG Chartz:

MW3 - 13.79
BLOPS - 13.27
MW2 - 12.74
Halo 3 - 11.50
MW - 8.62
WAW - 6.71

I really don't understand all the worrying a few pages ago. It's not like the news in the GI video was anything new. He was just saying what the article already said.

Also, now we can finally post this image as GI posted it on its site:

Halo4dmrenwraparound.jpg

Really liking the look of the new DMR

Also, in the gif with the AR, you can see that the player has 3 grenades. Could that be the new standard, or is it a certain perk./ability you can get? Of course it could also just be a gametype that allows players to have 3 grenades.

Didn't the GI cover story say 4 grenade types? Or did it say 4 grenades, as opposed to 2 max?
Just hoping 'nades are more like Halo 3's and no 'nade spamming.

EDIT 343i: DO NOT CHANGE THE GREEN TO BLUE ON DMR!

Honestly, I die a little inside every time I see CoD sales > Halo sales, or Live stats.
Can't fathom why CoD gets more players...I like the CoD motto of presentation> substance, but it makes the camapign a rent (can't rent games in France sadly) and the MP is so much more inferior.

That said, does a two weeks or month apart release change much?

Halo 4 is pretty much a test, it's been built around what the franchise does best, while keeping the momentum of FPS as they still try to get bigger and offer richer experiences.

You're right the games compete, and some people will have to choose.
But does MS really need to invest on big sci-fi authors and a complete studio if it is afraid of CoD?

Halo is the reason why I play on XBOX, I would go Steam otherwise.
I don't want to see them chicken out, I want them to prove my Halo love is justified.
There is no reason why they cannot build other fanboys like I, who, given the choice of halo vs cod, would laugh at the idea there was even a choice to be made.

Halo and CoD can hurt each other, or they simply can prove the gaming medium is so great that sometimes a 1st world problem like a game choice is justified by the sheer awesomeness of what is offered to us.
But in no way do I think shooting at arabs/soviets/cops etc... is better than shooting at purple aliens.
MS holds the moral path in promoting a fun, sci-fi IP over a glorified Rambo II game.

Where are the Reach sales? Reach sold 9millions copies with the same playbase like BLOPS.

Oh no, I meant to say that it looks like you can hold 3 grenades of a type like in this gif:

You can clearly see he has 3 frag grenades.

Yeah, i misread and then i noticed what you meant.
But are there more than 2 'nade types? I'd imagine there'd be at least 3, one for the new enemy... (Bring back spike 'nades, buffed).

EDIT i want DMR green HUD. Blue sucks, hard to see against sky.

According to VG Chartz:
Oh you mean that source for statistics that's banned and laughed at on GAF because of its inaccuracy, that VG Chartz?

That's a harsher tone that I'd like, I'm sorry. But seriously, don't ever cite VG Chartz as a source.

The discussion wasn't about what we prefer, it's about sales and release dates. MS want to keep Acti happy, they're the platform of choice for CoD and that makes a big difference in the West.
And a month changes a lot yes. The core base stays with both, but hype will get people who have already poured 30+ hours into the game that comes out first to pick up the other to play with friends.

I read an interesting idea on HBO: The EMP grenade.

Basically, it would work like the power drainer. It downs shields without killing anyone and it can also disable vehicles. The only differences from the power drainer would be that its area of effect is smaller and it doesn't last as long as the power drainer would.

Interesting picture. In this one, the grenade indicator is on the left rather than the right, what are the little shapes above the grenades? Crescent, diamond, etc.

Also take a look at dat armor ability cube icon. I wonder what AA that is?

The EMP 'nade has occured to me before as well.
And a Bubble Shield 'nade. Remember the CGI Halo 3 trailer where the bubble shield was revealed? Give us those as 'nades. Enemy has a rocket launcher? Throw a bubble on him and watch him blow up himself.

I would think a forerunner weapon could work like that.

I think Forerunner weaponry (if accessible) would go to the upper levels of refined and precision weapons (even big forerunner guns would somewhat feel powerfull yet restrained).

I think it has something to do with the age of the build. I think I prefer grenades on the left like in previous Halo games. I guess the diamond and the crescent are the other 2 grenade types.
