Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

Map sizes have been built to accomodate average faster movement around area.
Since they're built for specific gametypes, does that mean obj style maps don't play slayer "well" and thus you won't see them in slayer playlists often (and vice versa)? Just wondering how it will effect players who stick to one style of playlists only having limited options for maps to play on.

Or... are there so many fantastic maps already that every player with every desire will be satisfied, even if they're only playing on a portion of the maps on the disc?

You can choose different starting weapons on spawn?

Not sure how I feel. On one hand it fixes people who want AR starts. On the other hand I feel the BR is going to be nerfed.

No, the BR works the way it should. I know what you mean, but Nerfed is totally the wrong descriptor. DMR and BR are actually subtly and importantly different. And that's objectively - there are going to be subjective player preferences in that too. I suspect that even for long range battles, some folks' playstle will have them preferring the BR, even though the DMR is "objectively" more accurate at longer distances.

Did I miss it or did you guys confirm bloom for it (dmr)?

What worries me, and David and Frankie both mentioned this, is that if I played solo and ended up with awful teammates, now they can press a and run straight to they're death even quicker. I mean sure I probably shouldn't play alone, but its not always practical to find people to play with. I suppose the idiots on the other team will do the same thing though so the stupidity will naturally balance itself out.

I don't think there is game mechanic that can stop player stupidity.

Unfortunately.

lol I thought of this immediately. Some scrub getting 20 deaths and ending the game before anything can happen

as long as you cant spawn with a shotgun or power weapons, I'm okay with choosing your weapon if it means I can always start with a dmr or BR

DMR 5 shot kill?

edit: Wait a second, DMR beats BR if both players are accurate and firing at max rate of fire at long range? But close range BR gets the advantage? Because of the bullet spread on the BR? Did I get all that right?

Why yes you can.

Also, ALL of the primary stuff is unlocked for System Link and Customs for tourneys. No need to grind, just load out.

Really loving the sound of Ordinance, should make the mad rush for weapons more exciting. Since it becomes a "mini-objective" for both teams in a slayer game to go for that Rocket Launcher. Many times the opposing team doesn't keep track of spawn times so we get it easily.

Now everyone knows and it's a tougher challenge to get those weapons everytime. Well done.

Still confused about how this power weapon random spawn thing will work. Hopefully one of you listening to the cast can shed some light.

As for picking BR/DMR on spawn I think that's great. A little bit of choice, and possibly a better rifle for certain maps or certain types of opponents who use w/e armor abilities.

Legendary Edition, day -1, must have early.

You can be killed by a spawning weapon? And does this mean all weapon spawns require an open sky? Because they ping down from space for some arbitrary, meaningless reason.

Notes from u4ix.

PTS
-Points
-Projectile Tracking System

Halo April Sparkcast
-Brad Welsch, lead multiplayer designer
-Kevin Franklin, lead competitive multiplayer designer

"Random Weapon Drops"
Tradition power weapons magically appeared ~90 seconds
H4
-Ground up new spawning system
-Context of Infinity, accessible to new and classic players
-Initial weapon drops at start of match, control openings, team game strategy
-Timers set for when they pop in, communicate to player, no need for stopwatch
-Each map/mode specific weapons and drops for different maps
-Weapons will make sense, sniper for bigger maps
-Random seems to lean towards different weapons themselves, not different times/areas
-Can see which weapons have dropped where, takes away knowledge advantage
-Information not distracting, subtle UI elements
-Drops from space into the map
-Drop ins can kill you
-Weapon indicators disappear, you'll know a player has them

Respawns
-Control timing
-Lots of debate about 4v4 or 5v5 experience
-Can customize loadout during play
-In premier slayer experience
-Can customize spawn system
-"Premier experience" particular play accounts on particular maps
-Ultimate experience in every mode
-Maps can support any gametype, but each map is tailored to a certain gametype

Customs/LAN
-Turn off instant spawns
-Will support unlocking of weapons and unlocking AAs for tournaments
-"Career" mode in the game for grinding, no Warrant Officer 3 (l0l)
-Tournaments!
-Choice, concept, give players choices, what loadouts are for
-Empowering individual play styles
-"Preferences" favorite weapons, starting weapon discussion
-Once you put in the work and effort to unlock that BR, then you can use it
-Base weapons balanced for no "god tier" weapons
-All about how you play, sneaky, distance, etc
-Why have the BR and DMR? Different purpose, subtle differences, mechanical
-Each have their own distinct role
-BR better for jumping and fanning up, DMR for lateral movement
-DMR set RoF, DMR fires at a slower rate, balanced against BR
-BR has recoil, 3 bullet more upwards, distance between bullets will spread out
-BR not as effective at longer ranges, BR will lose to DMR
-Outer range of encounter space, DMR built to win
-Closer, BR will win
-AR also a beast, each gun has effective range
-Not every weapon can go in loadouts

AAs balanced
-Learned lessons for Reach
-How they're implemented in 4
-Similar, but different
-Changed because everyone has sprint
-Sprint by far most popular AA in Reach
-More interesting combinations
-Can't use sprint to flee combat
-Levels designed for faster mobility
-Sprint meter
-Slow down mechanic if getting shot, can't run up and double melee
-Can't run away as fast
-Base movement isn't slow, jumping higher, running/walking faster in H4 than Reach
-Looked at Halo 1 for specific weapons
-Looked at Halo 3 for movement benchmarks

Forerunner Vision
-Visor mode from ODST, situational awareness
-More like Sonar, won't go forever, specific distance, delay on knowledge
-Players within range of vision can hear you using it
-Counter each other, some can be used to counter (Rock, Paper, Scissors)
-More tradeoffs and the way they interact with each other
-Armor Lock didn't make the cut, ruined the flow and balance
-Every armor ability from Reach has been altered and changed in some way

-Assault Carbine, renamed
-Love using the gun
-Sound is terrifying
-Style has been in the game before
-Shield mangle, not head mangler
-Feels like a finisher, not a depleter

Can unlock items for competitive in Spartan Ops
-Take your character from PvP games is meaningful going into Spartan Ops
-Building a character you feel attached to
-Planning, being strategic in Spartan Ops

Small number of players given the chance to play the game
-Willy Wonka style

Hopefully being able to spawn with a DMR won't screw up BTB like it did in Reach.

How long is the Sparkast? My commute home is 45 minutes...

They describe the assault carbine being a shield mangler, not a head mangler, and that we've seen this type of gun before. Pretty heavily hints at the ODST SMG, I'd say.

Just about that long.

Interesting to see that you slow down while sprint and taking fire. Will it slow down my long sprint jumps if I'm shot in Mid-Air?

So my bet is at E3 or after E3 is when we'll get the pre order goodies tossed out and the different editions of the game.

343, my moneys, take all of it.

As a more casual competitive player, the weapon drop announcement should make things better for me. I always ask myself "is it 8:45 or 9:45 that rockets respawn?" I either show up 45 seconds early and just sit there or show up too late. It's just not something I want to think about as a more casual player.

I'm expecting some really exciting firefights over rockets now that every player knows that they are spawning.

So many good things in that podcast.

Hopefully will go into more details about unlocking soon, while I know you can do your unlocks in 'Spartan Ops', it shouldn't take long to unlock the BR/DMR, right?

I'll probably be playing the crap out of them myself, but I imagine some people will just want their BR unlocked for competitive as quickly as possible. Any time spent without being able to start with it will be perceived as a slight.

Also, stopping power against sprinting opponents, sogood.gif

What Halo 3 movement are you talking about? Default or MLG Halo 3 movement? Default was slow.

Also, what happens to pro players who get their accounts "hacked?" They would have to grind out games in order to be able to use BR (something that could be used for tournaments).

Edit: Finally, what about strafing? I want strafing to be responsive and not decelerate every time I change direction.

Double edit: I still don't understand the reasoning behind catering towards newer players. How does timed weapon drops affect less skilled players? They get matched up with other players around their skill level that also do not know timings of power weapons. Mechanics that benefit skilled players don't effect the new players if true skill does it's job.

I can't WAIT for someone to get a weapon crate dropped from the Infinity to drop on some dumb ass. Hilarious times. :D

I'm still not sold on forerunner vision.

The way Frankie described it in the podcast made it seem like it was designed for players that aren't as good as the top level players, so they put this ability in.

Well if it's made for players that aren't good, then what do they think is gonna happen when someone who is good gets a hold of it?

The sonar sweep does make it better and not as overpowered than if you were able to see someone the second you press the button, but I still don't like the fact that someone will be able to see me through a wall like this.

I'll wait til I actually see it in action though before making any more judgments, but that's just the way I see it so far.
