Kurenai (2008)

I finally decided to watch the anime version over the weekend after reading the manga for so many years. I was a little disappointed with the tone the director decided to use for this anime adaptation. It's too seriously dark! It had its cute moments but not enough compared to the manga. Overall, this show left me slightly dissatisfied. I want a Kurenai anime reboot,
with these scenes intact! HHHNNNNNNNGGGGG!!

The fanservice is dialed down to almost nothing in this episode.

This show is actually really entertaining. The gun terminology and the
balloon contest
made for some fun moments,. This is a lot of fun and one of my favorite shows this season.

There are so many OVAs and Movies that I just want to be released in any format besides LaserDisc.
There is another thing worth noting about that type of releases, and that is those legendary LaserDisc sets (LD-BOX) that were launched mainly at the time of highest popularity for the format... like the beautiful Neon Genesis Evangelion Theatrical or Theatre BOX (新世紀エヴァンゲリオン劇場版BOX):

NEON GENESIS EVANGELION MOVIES, LASERDISC BOX JAPAN

PUSTAN.COM - Neon Genesis Evangelion LD's Laserdisc japan
http://www.pustan.com/ld/japan/nge.html

These even included differences never seen again on posterior releases (not even as extras), and of course also had exclusive illustrations for those big and gorgeous jackets (with designs of Norihiko Nezu's influence). As expected of an avid LD collector like Mr. Anno.

Wow its only 250 bucks on ebay too.
Not bad for a great collectors item. If I was into Laserdisc Id highly consider it.

The
CG heli chase continues and the gang is forced to make a run for it.

Backs to the wall, the team has to put their heads together to face the
aerial assault. And Rock puts his mind to work to come up with a plan.

That's a badass quickshot, props to the storyboard

The shot before
the antagonist gets a torpedo literally squished against his face before getting his shit wrecked is also pretty great.

I liked the action for the plan. But nothing stood out visually, sans the couple of shots near the end of the brief fight. The episode was important however to set a base for Rock's inevitable growing loyalty and attachment to the gang. And some of the facial expressions, notably the ones that host fangs bare, are just gold.

In a way, this show's introduction reminds me of Requiem from the Darkness where an ordinary guy ends up helping a group that has lived a great deal in a world the complete opposite of his. The "first job" scene was all the more well scripted for that reason. It's showing the assimilation of "Rock's" world with that of Revy, Benny and Dutch. There's also a short part with that one big wig's family and how they're disconnected because he's an "All business" man, but I don't care about him right now.

Overall, solid development episode, I look forward to more growth (and explosions obviously).

Kuroko's Basket 2

Second episode was mostly good visually, though I feel they cheapened out during the basketball play part, at least initially. Still I keep loving the way shadows look on the characters and the plot is moving fast enough, which means some games should be starting coming soon.

Oh I like it too, I thought that added to the visual style of the anime. Otherwise continuing interactions with Kuroko and Kagami are good - funny, and Im ready to see these games too.

I wish it was more than 26 ep.

Why would you want to own Twilight of the Cockroaches, though? Talking poo in HD?

Where else will I get my fix for metaphors about genocide represented by cockroaches with a mix of live action and 2D in HD?

How rare are those LDs? Surely you should be able to find them on YAJ..

I'm not sure. My main point was that I would like to see them re-released in some form or another.

Yeah, the Neon Genesis Evangelion Theatre BOX LD was one of those that I forgot to mention.

Call Me Tonight (OVA) also just came to mind.

This was quite the journey. Near the end of this season Yumi almost seemed like a completely different person. No more was she the timid girl who was scared to voice her own thoughts, or who would fret about how others felt about her. She had become the epitome of patience. This was wonderfully shown through her conflicts with Touko, who at every turn would shut Yumi out from her hidden emotions whenever she felt her defenses faltering.
Touko's refusal on accepting Yumi's rosary was the catalyst for this significant change
. Looking at how Yumi was like in the first season and comparing her to what she is now just shows how well they developed her character over the years.

It wasn't until this season that we saw a real solid relationship between Rei and Sachiko (friends of course). Rei coming to terms that she'll be losing Yoshino in more ways than one was a dilemma that Sachiko had already prepared herself for regarding Yumi. To have Sachiko comfort Rei, (who probably wouldn't have been as affectionate in the first season) just shows how far along Sachiko has changed as well, much if not all of it due to Yumi's influence.

I don't know why, but I've been holding my breath for Yoshino during the entire series.
I imagined they were going to pull a scenario where her operation truly didn't go as planned and at some point she would die. I'm so glad I was wrong.
Her playful attitude and dedication and love towards her cousin Rei made her my favorite character behind Sei (former Rosa Gigantea).

For those who have the time I would definitely, definitely, recommend this series. While this may not be yuri
save for Sei
there is so much subtext you can pass it off as such. The characters, the setting, the music; loved it all.

I am always wowed by the amazing artwork that can be found on the best LaserDisc sets. It's just so much more impressive than a nice BD box because there's so much room for the art.

while we're (sort of) on the subject of NGE, anyone want to explain to me just what the hell this is?

According to the video description, it's some aspiring filmmakers' demo to market themselves to movie execs. Not even a peep about the blatant Eva imagery.

Ah My Goddess TV S2 04
A drunk Belldandy means everyone else is happy.
That was a fun episode, with drunk Belldandy showering happiness for everyone in town and Keiichi taking all the bad luck. Still, extremely wacky with the side story of what Urd and Skuld does, so it was pretty good just for the comedy.
