GAF, I need some real Horror movies

Recently I find myself enjoying watching scary movies late at night with the lights off and everything. and then still feeling scared or creeped out when i go to bed. make me scared of the dark again, etc.

No slasher or gore fests like Saw, that is hardly horror. And no thrillers either where there is a man hunting down bunch of people. I want to watch movies that will actually scare me and have a lingering effect after its over.

I've enjoyed:

The Ring

Paranormal Activity 1-3

Dark Water (japanese ver) - not the scariest but still enjoyable enough with great moments

Noroi: The Curse (japanese) - again not very scary overall but good parts for sure

I've seen [REC] movies, but only the first one is passable as horror. Can't watch Grudge because one of those parody movies ruined it for me lol.

Japanese horror is welcome.

When I was 10 or so my family and I moved into a new apartment. We had been there for probably two or three months when this happened.

My dad always had friends over to "bullshit" in the front yard area. This would mainly be drinking beer and talking about guy stuff.

Anyways, they would do this until the early hours of the morning, usually my dad would pass out on the couch and I would have to wake him up to go to bed in the morning.

I woke up in the middle of the night needing to pee, I could hear my father talking in the front yard with other unfamiliar voices. There was a nightlight that illuminated the hallway into the living room including the couch, I noticed that it looked like someone was sleeping where my dad usually does, with a foot hanging off the arm because the person being too large to fit all on the couch. Of course I investigate.

The shoe was foreign to me, it was all that I could make out at the moment. I still remember the smell of smoke, something that I was used to with smoking parents but it was harsher. As I approach the figure I say "Hello" to try and greet him. The man whom I had never met before, I can tell that by now, lays silent. I then ask "Who are you?". The figure sits up, looks at me but says nothing still. I then ask him, "What are you doing?"

"I'm waiting." he says. This startled me a little, I half expected him to be mute. I asked "For who?". That's when he told me "The Devils has his favorites. Now, got to sleep, child."

I was a little confused, so I went to sleep without finishing my bathroom visit. The whole conversation left me a little rattled. I asked my dad who was sleeping on the couch the next day but he claims that no one was in the apartment. Now keep in mind, my dad could have been fucking with me, I wouldn't put it past him to tell me that no one was sleeping on the couch when he knew better.

That's my story. I hope it's better than your movie.

I always recommend Reincarnation/Rinne in these threads. Doesn't seem like much of GAF's seen this movie. Easily my favorite asian horror film.

I thought he didn't want a slasher film? Severance and Tucker/Dale are pretty slasher in nature.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil is awesome though. Hoping the sequel 'Tucker and Dale go to Yale' happens soon/

Inspired Silent Hill. (the first game.)

very psychological horror, not a gore fest.

edit: yeah, and +1 to The Thing (1982). Movie is freaking amazing.

Yeah, you're right. I was going to recommend only Haute Tension but it made me remember the other 3.

I haven't seen it yet, but I heard good things about À l'intérieur too.

I'll just assume you haven't seen:

The next one involves a creepy child, but I thought had a very satisfying story (Warning, has subtitles because it's in Spanish):

My last suggestion isn't really a "slasher" movie but does involve two people terrorizing a family. I really, really hate movies like Hostel, so it's not like that. You have to keep in mind while watching that the Director is using it as a commentary on audiences liking violence (It's his reaction to people liking Saw for some reason).

EDIT:
Holy fuck, how could I forget Event Horizon. Pause at the right moment and have nightmares for days.
