Free 7GB Cloud Storage - Microsoft SkyDrive

So now I have:

25 gig on Dropbox (thanks to referrals and promotions)
25 gig on Skydrive
50 gig on box.net
8.7 gigs on SugarSync (pfft)

Out of all of these, I only use about 1 gig on dropbox (but I'm a really light cloud user. I really should back up more stuff on the cloud).

I wonder how much space will Google Cloud Service provide.

I really do like the box.net dav support, even though I've never actually used it. It's mounted on my Linux box, but I'm too lazy to create the backup scripts I to backup stuff to there...

There is a two step authentication process for PC file fetching.

You have to download the SkyDrive app off the marketplace to enable this. Doesn't come preloaded. So if you dont want it, you wont have it.

I just tested this out on my computer and when you install the Skydrive app it asks if you want this enabled or not. If you enable it you can only access that computer's files through the skydrive website. When click on the computer with it enabled the website says it doesn't recognize your browser and emails you a code to input before you can access the files. So essentially it's a two factor authentication. I still am curious how secure it is outside of the browser.

Perfect. Thank you guys for the info :)

Sugarsync its actually most useful. It let you auto sync on your smartphone. The only reason I haven't to it is that I am waiting for google drive.

If I ever need to send something to my phone, I send it to dropbox and open dropbox on the phone to get it.

SugarSync does what? Automatically downloads it to my phone?

dropbox and skydrive sync with your phone too.
I love the office/one note integreation on my WP7 and my PC.

Hmm, I guess I used SkyDrive before since I got offered to upgrade from 7gb to 25gb. I am using Windows 8 on another system so maybe that's why.

It does everything except undelete. Right click -> share and Right click -> version history.
"Share" isn't a public link. I mean a direct link to a file that you can instantly download from your browser. I don't want to go through any web interface.

I'm also not seeing any version history for an image I just updated.

I went to my computer's Dropbox folder -> Public -> Right-click -> Copy public link on a random file in there.

Can this be done with SkyDrive?

Yeah those are more specific things. Share goes through the interface, open office docs in a web app (which I find kinda nice), media formats are previewed and all others are viewed in Skydrive's list view. It's a personal thing and I wouldn't argue not having a preview is a feature.

History is a diff of doc files. Binary files don't diff well (pretty much has to be a total copy). Which is why images don't have history. It's nice Dropbox does it.

It doesn't look like you can. It doesn't have anything like the dropbox sub-menu.

Nope.

You can only get to the "share" option from their web interface. And even then, the link they give you to "share" isn't a direct link to the file.

Yeah, that's why I really like Dropbox. They basically give you 30 day snapshots for every file, not just Office documents. It's how they're able to offer undeleting of files too.

I've installed this, but it doesn't seem to be syncing..none of my exisiting files i have in skydrive show up in windows explorer, nor are any files I drag over to explorer being uploaded online.

If I sync a "comic" folder with sugersync on my PC, any new comic will be automatically downloaded to the Android "comic" folder. If I finish a comic, I just need to delete it on my phone, it will automatically delete it off my PC folder too.

Do you have any security software that may be blocking its internet connection?

A direct link is offered in the SkyDrive REST interface. Although it is not persistent. So I am assuming permanent direct download links are currently not supported for handing out.

At least give MS a chance to catch up to Dropbox, they only just officially launched.

MS has had Skydrive for years. Older than the iPhone itself in fact. The question is why do you still give it a chance after numerous failures.

I'm pretty sure Skydrive didn't have an App like Dropbox. It was like Google Docs where it was a file depository. There was no synching.

I won't. I just rather have 25 gigs linked to Windows 8 when that comes out as opposed to 5, or 7 as it was the case.

Hmm, well it's definitely not that.

When it first asked you to log in to your account did it pop up with any errors? If it didn't then it seems to be able to connect. Which would point to there being another problem.
I know it might sound stupid, but a problem like this is quite often resolved by restarting your computer.

Well now that MS actually have an app out, I doubt they're just going to sit back. I'm sure they'll catch up soon enough.

Yes it didn't error out during the initial install and gave an error message. I've restarted...uninstalled and removed registry settings and re-installed....no luck.

I'll just wait for another release.

Oh, so only existing users have the choice of keeping 25 gigs for free, while new users only get 7 gig?

Interesting. Good thing I probably made an account sometime in the past, because I got the option to keep using 25 gigs.

Edit: It's also JUST LIKE DropBox? It creates a folder on my computer (let's say on drive C) and everything I drop in there will physically use space on my disk and be uploaded/synced on SkyDrive cloud space? At least DropBox allows me to change the location of that folder...

Why can't they make these applications backup a folder on the cloud without copying it locally to a arbitrary folder on my desktop, like SugarSync does? For example, all my pictures are on my D drive. I don't want to copy them to the SkyDrive folder on C to have them synced to the cloud, I want the application to allow me to chose a folder and keep tabs in that folder, wherever it may be on the system...

I got the option to upgrade to 25GB free. But I don't think I'll be using this anyway.

More free cloud storage is always nice to have, imho. The problem is I got hooked on how Dropbox handles syncing, so providers that depend on a separate file manager app or a web interface to download and upload files are really annoying to me. I have 9.5GB on Dropbox, Skydrive gives me 7GB, and Google's drive thing is rumoured to offer 5GB. That's a lot of piece of mind to have when good hard drives turn bad (which has happened to me way too often).

Damn, I'm glad I've been on SkyDrive for a while. 25GB free upgrade is nice. iOS app also works really well.

I already sort of use SkyDrive because I'm using Windows Live Sync (or Live Mesh...or whatever this damn service is called now). I've always found it more useful than Dropbox because you don't have to have a specific folder, you can select any folder and it will automatically sync to the cloud and other devices.

Mesh is going away and will be replaced with this.

Hmm you can select random folders?

Guess I'll check it out. I hate having to make a stupid MS account though.

edit: only 7gb? Fuck. Ah well

I think a big part of skydrive and gdrives allure will be the paid tiers.... unlike dropbox skydrive is pretty reasonable for the extra space and gdrive will also probably be the same.

I for one am going to jump on the 100 gig package and upload video I want to save long term there..... for $50 a year I can handle that (at dropbox that would have cost $200). I expect most people who actually use skydrive/gdrive alot will opt for the paid plans because of the relative cost where people have gone nuts on the dropbox referral because their paid plans are not priced competitively anymore.
