Only having one letter on the folder is pretty bad, but do you guys have such short memory spans that you can't remember which platform of games goes in which folder just by what position they are in on the home screen?

This is why the symbol system is a generally good idea, even if it's not directly related to the contents of the folder. For like a week you'll probably just bumble around, checking the full names until you reach the one you're looking for, but after that you'll just know which is which.

It's not ideal, but I'm not really one to make a big stink about 3 steps forward, 1 step back. 2 steps forward is acceptable. Who knows, they might make up that extra step later.

Well, they work in that they are folders and you can put things in them, but the interface is so godawful and limited that it makes sorting and organizing the actual folders far too obtuse. One character labels is just total nonsense. I suppose in Japan it might not be bad since one character can be an entire word, but else where it is simply nowhere near enough detail. A series of useful icons (perhaps little pictures of various systems) and other icons would be very useful. There are a few already (starts, notes, etc) but there are not enough and most of them aren't really useful for naming folders. They're too abstract. Even the ability to color-code the folders would be a huge improvement.

Let's put it this way. When Apple put folders on the iPhone, if the folder names were limited to one character, they would have been laughed off the face of the earth. And the folders on 3DS seem pretty inspired by the iPhone, but Nintendo completely screwed the pooch on them. But this is Nintendo's M.O. They constantly half-ass the simple stuff and get away with it.

I dunno if it's "half-assed".
I don't see the problem all you people got. You can name the folders like you want. you can even give them long names. the real folder's name is displayed on the upper screen like it is with any other app/game on your 3DS. I don't see any writings on the video/music/etc apps, do you? I only see icons on the lowers screen and it's describtion on the upper screen.
keep in mind that the 3DSes lower screen is pretty low res. icons for the folders would have been great, I agree. maybe Nintendo will update them later, if we moan enough.

I think you're being a touch melodramatic.

Wants the largest console games publisher to avoid Nintendo's platforms.
I just noticed that when I exit any dsiware app the system warm-reboots, just like when exiting the System Settings app. Is that something that was introduced in fw 4.0.0 or was it there before? I have no recollections of that.

Just a touch.

It makes sense to only have one letter for the folder since you can change the size of the folders, something you can't do on iOS.
Exactly. You can make the icons on the 3DS so small that even if the 3DS had a Retina display like the iPhone, you wouldn't be able to see a full name at that size. People don't seem to understand this. The folders on the 3DS work great, the only thing they really need to add is the option to change the color of a folder.

Ideally the number of letters shown on the folder icons would scale with their size, but this is admittedly a lot to expect from Nintendo. :p

I do hope we get colour customizing though. That to me seems a far stranger omission than the letter thing.

Actually, there may not be enough space for a full name, but I think they should have let people use 3 characters instead of one.

I think going with one letter at any icon size was the best option for them. If you put even just a few more letters on the icon, even at its largest size, you'd have a string of text along the middle of the icon with two empty strips of blue at the top and bottom. I just can't imagine it looking anywhere as nice as a single large letter that fills the icon evenly. Besides, even if they did make it so that the larger your icons are, the more characters are displayed, there still has to be a limit. Let's say the limit is 5 characters at the largest size, you'll end up with folder icons with names like "Appli", "3D Cl", or "Game ". Not very appealing is you ask me.

Not if you did it *that* way, but it would certainly give people more flexibility in their naming choices, while still making it easy to differentiate between folders. There are a lot of things Nintendo could have done, but whatever! 'Sall good.

We got folders, guys. I happy.

But if you were to name your folders around a five character limit for the folder icons, then the full names for your folders are going to look stupid. I'd much rather like to name a folder "Game Boy Advance" and have the first letter on the icon than being forced to name a folder "GBA" so the abbreviated characters on the icon make sense and look nice even though the full title looks very short and empty.

That's what I meant by "a lot of things" -- we could've been given the options to customize the max number of letters to appear for each folder, or even the lettering on the icon separately from the folder's title itself. And I'm not a UI designer, I'm sure more qualified people could come up with better solutions. Like I said though, it doesn't really matter.

Yeah, I suppose you're right, though I think something like folder creation should be as simple as possible. Hell, there were a bunch of people posting here who couldn't even figure out how to create a folder at first, even though it's pretty obvious! I don't think they'd want to confuse people even more with too many options like that.

But either way, you're right, it doesn't really matter. We got folders, they work, yay!

Seriously? The iPhone of all thing. Not perhaps bog standard computer OS that we have been using for years?

It's not a memory span issue, it's a this-is-the-year-2012 issue. I could use up to 8 characters to name my "folders" in MS-DOS, and all 8 characters would be displayed.
Did you just compare a command line interface to a gui? Pretty sure if the 3DS was a command line and you typed "ls" the full title would appear just like when you select a folder and look at the top screen. Magical.

Yep, I did, just to bother you. I'm sure we could substitute Windows 3.1 in there so you feel better about my comparison. The point still remains that Nintendo can do better than a single letter representation of the folder's contents. Icons, preferably, but colors and/or a three-letter abbreviation (independent of the folder's full name) would have been a significant improvement over one single letter. Just doesn't strike me as a well thought-out implementation.

Why has Metroid, Super Mario Bros, and Zelda for NES different and awesome new icons?
It has like a TV and a NES model.
The rest of the nes have the old ones.

And I dont understand the complaints people are having with the icons, I think they work pretty well, and the whole name is in the top screen. Im using a symbol like the star, the music note, etc... and then the whole name that I can look in the top screen. For example, I have the white star for all the Retro Folders, but the three of them have the star symbol and then Retro NES, Retro GBA... And have them all in the same line in order of console launch.
There could be colour changes for the folders, because they are not many good symbols in the 3DS keyboard, but other than that, its pretty good.

Those games have been updated with the proper files.
The rest are still WIPs.

I think the whole 1 letter thing is a remnant of the Japanese version of this update. 1 letter of Kanji can tell you quite a bit more than 1 English character. I am kind of making this up though but it makes sense if that is the reason behind it. It's not ideal but it's not something to get upset over either.

Just updated and the folders are cool and all, but only allowing the first letter to display on the folder icon? Wouldn't 3 characters make more sense? Dammit Nintendo get your shit together!

Apple invented folders, and GUIs and everything that's used nowadays. Didn't you know?

Oh shit I totally forgot this. Upgrading now.

"the l and r buttons have to be held for a sec before they go to the camera."

That's fantastic!

All they need to add is more symbols in the next update that more accurately represent what the folders contain. A symbol for demos, videos, 3DSware, etc..

Inane feature I want most from a 3DS firmware update: an option to load DS/DSiWare/VC games in the original 1:1 resolution instead of being forced to hold select every time.

I mean it.

hmm, i wonder if taking the battery pack in and out would fix it....

Its like its in perpetual sleep mode/off. Fully charged and the notification/power light is just slowly blinking blue, yet it won't turn on fully.

Just keep pressing poweroff for 5-10 secs

These folders are so beautiful.

I love this.
No more clutter. No more crowding.

Seriously though, this is a great feature. Now Sony needs to do the same for the Vita.

Yeah, it took like a whole minute for me too for the 3DS to turn back on after the update. Scared the shit out of me.

The thing to remember is that this is Nintendo. Yes, it's one letter but with Nintendo we kinda have to allow them to take baby steps.
