- Lastly, Eternal Darkness 2. If the rumours are true than Nintendo fans should be very excited. Unlike the other examples where the main excitement for driving a franchise forward has laid with sound or visuals. Eternal Darkness 2 could do something very very different. If the rumours of the return of the vitality sensor are true, than this could be a perfect fit for making technology that fans are sceptical about, be welcomed with open arms. Imagine a title where insanity effects become more and more intense as your heart rate is raised. This could provide an unparalleled horror experience. What is more important is that for it to work, the game would absolutely have to be scary. And so because of this, we may get one of the most expertly crafted horror titles ever made.
I've been away. Have there been new rumours on ED2?

I think that worrying about Pikmin 3 being an upscaled Wii game is just being cynical. The series was a graphical showpiece on the GameCube, so I'm sure it'll be that way for Wii U. It's a game that's meant to have realistic environments.

yeah but they were at the point where they were literally about to announce it for the Wii, which means they probably had a lot done. All I'm saying is expecting it to be a graphical show-piece ground up wii-u game is PROBABLY being way too optimistic. Like EatChildren said, it might be a Wii game with some graphical upgrades bolted on, but visible wii assets and all that still there.

It could go either way, but I don't think it's cynical to think this.

#14538: ShockingAlberto, "I do know that laid off employees from SK were asked to sign NDAs about the project they were working on prior to termination. It does not seem like SK's usual partners would be that paranoid."

That's really it. Oh, and a while back (from Wikipedia):
"In November 2011, Silicon Knights claimed they wanted to focus on one of their most requested titles for the next generation of consoles. This combined with the fact Nintendo had trademarked the title once again, spawned rumours that another Eternal Darkness game would be made as a launch title for the Wii U."

I'm sure they will continue to attempt to keep the casual market in their bag but capturing the core market is a whole other ball game. Lots of things need to happen, and they're all things Nintendo simply hasn't done at the level that they need to be done at to succeed in that area.

I was just saying that us here know what has to be done, the gaming media knows what has to be done considering the 500 articles about "What the Wii-U needs to do", and so on. So I was saying that it'll be interesting to see if Nintendo is truly clueless, or if they will hit all the notes. Notes being a full fledged online infrastructure that is easy to use and well implemented, courting third party developers at a high level, increasing output from their own studios in order to avoid any gaps of lacking content, and so on and so forth. Many a things need to be proven. E3 will be where we see whether or not they truly realize what they're getting themselves into by making the bold statements they have.

The basic questions I have right now have to do with how good third party support is and how much resources they're pouring into the OS. Their software targets are just way, way too broad for them to go it alone expansions or not. The OS they can get right provided they put enough resources into really, really polishing it before launch.

Third party support is the tough one. I'll be reasonably understanding if a few third party titles are late or missing for the first year but after that not so much. E3 will at least get us an idea on how much they're trying on that front. Right now it definitely feels like it's better though. THQ and Ubisoft are definitely all in this Fall.

The OS/online portion I'll get a pretty good feel for right at or close to launch.

Sure. As far as I'm aware it was targeting the Wii, and shifted to the Wii U. I suspect a significant amount of development has already been done on the game, and Nintendo is targeting the Wii U launch. Whether or not they'll meet it I have no idea. This is Nintendo. But I believe it to be their intentions.

Why wouldn't it be? Honestly. If people don't think Pikmin 3 will make launch, then under that logic they should assume that no Nintendo titles will make launch.

I can see Nintendo sitting on this game until Spring 2013, whether it's ready or not. Depending on how much 3rd party support is ready at launch, I just don't see the point Pikmin being there. I think Nintendo knows it needs Mario, the new "wii sports," and something else that appeases the "core." Pikmin 3, kinda niche/kinda obscure, would probably only get the attention of Nintendo's typical fans.

The only reason Nintendo would put Pikmin 3 at launch is if it relies heavily on Wii U features.

Well, with controlling Pikmin being pretty ideal for the Wii U pad controls, we can imagine it'll feature Wii U innovations.

Also, isn't the fact that they were going to show this in 2010 but 'the conference was too busy' an actual indication that they may have already changed direction with the IP at that point already? It could even be the case that they've had two and a half years of Wii U focused development.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.

That is kind of what I am thinking. We have no idea when they shifted over, but it could have been a long time ago. just because Nintendo confirmed they moved it over last year doesn't mean that is when they did it.

Sometimes launch is the best time for niche games. Only reason why Red Steel sold well.

No. I refuse to believe that. Pikmin isn't a game about art direction, so that just doesn't make any sense. It'll just end up looking ugly if they do that. I only see thaem doing that if Wii U actually is significantly weaker than current consoles.

Considering Miyamoto specifically brought up the visuals as a reason to transfer the game over to Wii U, I'd say that's confirmation enough that it's a focus...

Thanks. I hope this turns out to be true. ED was one of my fav Gamecube games ever.

This too. It seems like the main reasoning behind the move was HD.

I personally believe the decision to move it was made way back in 2010.

Nothing gives me chills more than the reveal of Twilight Princess just as people started to leave. That's gaming magic right there.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Boyynv4FgaQ

Fucking chills.

Oh but hell yes.

Now, I'd like to see a conference with two or three of those "SURPRISE!" moments. It could come from a surprise game announcement, be it from a third party or from a first party revival. It could be from a surprise controller feature like haptics. {*pauses, waiting for GameplayWhore to finish creaming himself at the mention of the H-word*} It could be a surprise guest appearance from the celebrity developer, like Mark Rein.

So many possibilities this time around, especially with Nintendo being so tight-lipped. In one seventy-five-minute period, they could squash any Sony/Microsoft E3 discussion like a bug.. if they bring the goods.

True, but you also need an idea that people finds very interesting. Red Steel had the swordfighting thing (even if it wasnt 1:1 movement), and i think it was the first FPS game for the Wii, which was interesting enough with the point-and-shoot controls.

I wrote a piece today on most of what we know. You can read it here.

I could see this as well, but I also think Nintendo will try their hardest to avoid mistakes with the 3DS, which was giving third parties too much freedom and not pushing any big titles of their own. They might, for example, launch with Mario and that's it. Coupled with third party ports that would be sufficient. But I wouldn't be surprised if they did plan for Pikmin 3 at launch, to cater to that demographic, which is still fairly niche.

EDIT: Bought to my attention by another, and probably already posted here, but the Eternal Darkness trademark was renewed as early as January this year. See here.

Hey EC pretty good article but I don't know how time works in Australia but isn't E3 in like...just over a month. You wrote a couple months at the bottom :p

can Zelda HD get this kind of reaction at next year's E3?

I just don't see which IP will be that much hype...

also was sup with that crowd during TP I thought most of those were professional journos

Thread continues to move at light speed. wsippel's info about the upgraded tablet signal possibly being strong enough to take it between floors, Craig Harris saying they 'wouldn't put Aliens CM on a console inferior to PS3/360,' and rumored Streetpass card are all awesome and encouraging bits.

I just wanted to note how profoundly disturbing it is that Crash has fleshy pink lips in this cover art. *shudder*

Yeah. I always want to think of that moment as the epitome of hype but it always comes back to being just a total embarrassment.

Art direction is not something you use when you can't count on power even if looking at majority of games, it seems like it.
And pikmin has a certainly a stronger art direction than a lot of games.
That doesn't go against the need of power to make it shine.

Assuming that it stays accessible. NeoGAF is pretty stoutly-built, but a Nintendo console reveal conference can take-down the moon. :)

but thats not the first time we have seen the WiiU

so it should be okay since we are all expecting it... also MS and SONY will go first on Monday making it much easier on the servers

Last year was fine but it necessitated the removal of animated avatars =(

Didn't It go down for about 45 minutes when Rayman leaked or was that just me?

GAF is in for it at this E3 if that's the case.
I wasn't able to pay full attention to GAF that morning.. was the downtime ever attributed to one cause? Rayman was the most obvious culprit, but I don't remember seeing any confirmation..

And even i am moderately surprised
You dont know japanese?

Yes, but not to the extent i'd be considered for a position that would need me to be , at least, absolutely 100% fluent.

Anyways, it's by the by, my wife is qualified for this though - but chances of her leaving her current job are zero ... unless!

We're actually a month behind.

Thanks :p.

One thing I didn't see mentioned in there was that SK and Crystal Dynamics went to court over the Legacy of Kain franchise. That would be a pretty large factor in them not being involved with any sort of reboot.

I didn't want to take up much more space in my article, but yeah, this is one of the big reasons I don't think they're working on Legacy of Kain. I doubt Square-Enix would reach out to Silicon Knights, not when Crystal Dynamics should be capable of doing it themselves, and SE already has a ton of contacts to help out where necessary.
