Halo |OT3| Remember Reach?

Yea I also get annoyed when the Art and Storytelling features are too heavily weighted. I mean I know the artists want to push the boundaries of their Halo games and make amazing scenes. Thats great cause I play through the campaign a couple times, and a lot of people buy the game play through it once or twice and never even go into MP.

Really though I feel the gameplay suffers sometimes because of all these artistic "thats so cool!" design decisions and it gets a little annoying when most of the diehard fans really just go straight to MP over and over and just want a real solid game that just works.

I think the fact that they said the maps are being purpose built for competitive play points to a high likeliness that they are being designed for replay-ability.
They are not limited to the scope of the campaign as Reach was.

A fair assumption, however the map with the mech screams the opposite to me, at least from my very distant vantage point. Doesn't mean I'm right, just that I'm curious. I suppose I definitely think there's a balance between Forge World and supremely detailed play spaces.

Beneath the facetious remarks there's a genuine point, at least for me and perhaps a few other competitive players about how the maps will hold up after 200 matches, and whether this is a consideration for the artists.

I may sound naive asking that, and perhaps that's just because 343i as yet haven't shipped a Halo game that I can use as a barometer, but it's something that's as important to me as, for example, Firefight is to someone else.

I ain't planning on leaving the Infinity often.

At least wait until we've seen some gameplay on the maps before hating. We've only seen snippets of them and like 20 seconds total of gameplay.

What? My response was to

"Thank god. Let's hope no zero g for all maps"

where's the confirmation of no low grav sections in H4 MP?

Don't worry, it was meant with hugs. Anyway, Robots are better than low-G. Maps are designed for gameplay first, art considerations happen after the baseline purpose and flow of the map is established.

Most of our MP spaces are gray blocks (don't you DARE say anything about Forge) and grassy floors until well into development. The Mech, jokes aside, is above your line of sight.

Could you give some examples? I am not sure if I grasp what you are saying fully. To me, for example, Powerhouse is a good map. Plays well enough and fun can be had there. However, there are just bits of the map that are pure fluff. Rock garden is this weird bit of the map for me because it feels like it shouldn't be as 'deep' an area as it is. There are trees there, much like those in Boardwalk, whose sole function is seemingly to obstruct player's vision in some way.

I'd much prefer function over form when it comes to MP maps. Condemned does this right I feel. The easthetics change and there is a lot there visually, but the visuals never obstruct gameplay, or so it feels that way to me.

Is that a good stab at what you were saying?

I personally think that it's a good think. I think the DMR in Reach kills too quickly. With Reach's slow ass movement speed in there, it makes it nearly impossible to get behind cover when being shot.

I assume Reach is your first Halo? The BR and particularly the CE magnum killed a player a lot faster than the DMR for all intents and purposes. You didn't have sprint then either.

I don't care that Wraparound (or "Nimbus" [my suggestion that totally better get put in, haha]) is gray, it looks great. The columns look very nice, and the lighting is intense.

Downloading and installing the newest gfwl client/update package remedied that for me.
Oh, sweet! Can you link me? If it's through the game itself, I can't do it. Stupid thing won't even start up :/

I'm not really comparing games. Even taking Reach and setting it apart from the other Halo games, I think the DMR kills too quickly, made worse by the 3x scope which makes it basically a mini-sniper with very comparable accuracy and faster fire rate.

I bet no one here agrees with me, but I like Reach's kill times. Aside from the movement speed, which I still don't particularly loathe (my problem lies with the inertia), I like Reach's overall game speed. Slow and methodical wins it for me.

Although Halo 3 is still my favorite Halo.

Yea like you know Ok so theres like a painting you can look at it and you can enjoy that. That would be like traditional art. Then you have your grandpa who used to tell you really long stories that you hated and didn't appreciate when you were young. Then theres baseball that you were forced to play as a kid and just lost on purpose so you could get your snowcone and go back home.

Theres like ART, STORYTELLING and some PHYSICAL INTERACTION all in a video game. The only problem is with a game you don't really stare at it like a piece of art, but the artists do. You don't really sit there and listen to it but the game directors need to put all these levels and images together and tell a story. You do interact a lot with it though, like when I play I don't just walk somewhere stare at the images for awhile and move to the next part of the map. If I wanted to do that I would just go drive somewhere and look at stuff.

I do PLAY the game though and I want that part emphasized. What it looks like is almost irrelevant. H2 maps were terribly graphically inferior to H3, Reach, and H4 but we still think H2's maps were great. Thats because playability is the most important thing. How the game works.

All these "OH SHIT THATS COOL" decisions (Zero G isn't even cool Unreal Tournament and Quake did it way better) are just fluff in a game and often times at the expense of the Interactive part.

I dunno I'm rambling.

Weekly is 9 missions on heroic.
Hmmm... Perfect excuse for a long overdue replay of the campaign. I might bite on this one.

I'll never understand the idea of powering through challenges, only to get the next level of Cr to buy some kneepads. But hey, whatever floats your boat. Many people don't see the allure of achievements either.

Challenges do tend to keep me going when I'm thinking of calling it a night though. I only need to kill 3 more elites in Firefight? OK, I guess I have time for one more match...

Haha, you planning on speedrunning Nightfall 9 times?

'cause I sure as hell am. 15k away from hero

I'm going to do a Campaign run, it's been a while since I did one; I think the last was for the same weekly. My last, super-methodical Heroic solo run took 4.5 hours all told, which isn't all that much time spread over the course of the week; I'm just going to do a mission or two each night as a chaser to matchmaking. I'm hoping there's a fair number of Campaign challenges this week to stack on'em.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone would join me in a Halo 1 Legendary playthrough. I don't think I could handle it solo.

It's not that hard on Legendary. I've finished every level in CEA on Legendary besides Halo and Keyes so far and they've all been pretty easy. Although, none of the Halos are that hard on Legendary besides 2.

That's what I do when this challenge comes up.

Dude. Even that's not necessary.. only have to do it once.

*ducks*

WHO THREW THAT?!

I'm just learnin' him some. Not recommending.

Explain.

I may play through some of the good levels for the heck of it. Wish it was heroic or higher, I have yet to do a legendary run.

Suggestion for a weekly, beat the game on legendary, worth a loooooot of points. 100k?

This weekly comes just a week after completing my last Reach playthrough, of course.

Dang, I could have used the credits, a whole 1.2% towards my next rank.

:|

It is really interesting seeing this same challenge ramp up the payout every time it shows up. Reach launch week was just 5000, which I remember thinking was a ton at the time.

Not that difficult to do. With all skulls on is a different story

I consider Reach's campaign to be among the best in the series.
(I'm serious)

Also realized my opinions differ from HaloGAF's quite often.

I'd be down to play some missions. Silent Cartographer, AotCR, The Library, and Two Betrayals. Hit me up some time.

smh @ Fracas. :p

I completely agree. Having played Anniversary recently, i noticed how some levels in CE were more frustrating then i remembered. Most of them involve the flood too. You just have to back up too often, then you start walking forward and there they are again at the same place, wave 2. So you start going backwards again. I don't remember there being that many waves of flood at one place in so many spots in the game.

...........Why would you put The Fucking Library above, oh, every other unmentioned mission in the game not named 343 Guilty Spark?
