The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
A Dawn of War 2 style squad-based RTS/RPG game would work in the Metroid universe, as long as Samus isn't the protagonist. Then again, by that point it's barely a Metroid game.

I would absolutely love that. Relic + Nintendo would be incredible. Although, I'd be more than happy to just take a Relic RTS on a Nintendo console; there is no need for everything to shoehorn everything in to the same old IPs.

It was said above and pretty much ignored:

the misterious button just below de dpad on the DRC could activate the "portable mode" on the fly without using menus on the touchscreen. I would dig it if so.
That would be quite encouraging. To switch from one mode to the other so effortlessly? Beautiful.

So, the NFC sensor wont be able to actively sense while you're playing?

Damn that's...short sighted.

It's not a button. It's just a square that's painted-on, right on the spot where the NFC sensor is.

EDIT: I'm guessing that it will light up when it's being accessed.

Yeah but I thought you'd be able to use analogue sticks n' shit whilst using it, which would make games like ED2 waayyyyyyyyyy more interesting if it actively does it whilst you're playing, opposed to the player having to stop every now and then.

Mainline Final Fantasy being Nintendo-exclusive fits that definition, but what I keep hearing from fans is that the reputation has been tarnished somewhat over this last generation.

People can sit around saying that so and so franchise is tarnished and not relevant anymore, but all it would take is one good trailer and look, there goes the hype train. No one in their right mind would ignore something that looks good just because they didn't like the last few installments. They may carry a sense of skepticism, sure, but if the game was actually good and a lot more promising and launched to great reviews they'd be all over it in a heartbeat.

The rep has been tarnished by FFXIII and S-E in general, but show people something new that looks good and I can't imagine why anyone would frown upon it.

NFC = Near Field Communication = the thing that lets you scan in toys and credit cards like the Rayman Legends video

It's not a vitality sensor. Also, a vitality sensor needs to surround your finger so it can shoot a beam of light through it.

How would that work? A third hand attachment?

If there is an Eternal Darkness 2, I think it's likely it'll be one of those early games that use the WUC's features in unique and extraordinary ways.

It'll be pretty big, but* I'm just saying that it's not top tier megatonnage anymore, not like CoD exclusivity, for instance. A real megaton is something that you can't possibly see happening until it happens. Mainline Final Fantasy being Nintendo-exclusive fits that definition, but what I keep hearing from fans is that the reputation has been tarnished somewhat over this last generation.

But maybe I just read Forums too much and am not getting the full picture.

*proper backtracking here. ;)

"Top Tier megatonage" simply doesn't happen anymore, & I would have thought people would consider that LoZ reputation has been tarnshed in a similar way, but that doesn't mean that people aren't interested in seeing what the next one will be like.

Brands like FF only need one good game to bring it back to stardom. The only problem is whether that happens or not.

Indeed. My faith is at an admittedly all-time low, even despite enjoying XIII-2, BUT a different approach and different team could bring it around. Also the FF games are generally different from one another so I have no reason to expect FFXV to be like XIII or XIV.

Toriyama's writing is hurting it -- not that the FF games have ever had good writing with the sole exception of the more mature and grounded FFXII -- but from what I understand people are typically okay with batshit insane plots that make no sense as long as the plot is somewhat interesting and the game is good.

FFXIII had a horrible story, a horribly written story, and apart from the battle system it just wasn't very well-designed. Hence the hate. XIII-2 remedied things on a gameplay front but the writing and annoying style of XIII was still prevalent.

Ah, kind of like how Mario sales had gone down until Nintendo went "back to basics" with both NSMB and the more linear Galaxy games. What you say has truth to it.

I'm going to set a budget of $450 for my WiiU/software purchase at launch

I may have to spend even more if the software titles are all solid AAA

So you're getting the system and 1 maybe 2 games. I haven't decided on a budget for myself yet, will probably just start setting aside money now and we'll see. I ended up dropping way too much on the Wii and 360 launches, but I have a feeling I'll spend more here depending on launch day games.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
It makes perfect sense for that button to be the switch between TV and DRC screen.

Hey, I have an idea... What if it's for the TV's power? If myself and others are correct in predicting Nintendo will include universal remote functionality, it would make since that you'd want to have a dedicated power button for the TV for when you want to stop watching/playing on the tv but still want to use the wuc for the Internet, mini games, etc.

Uhh...It could be on the back for your index finger to rest on?

The nfc sensor and the vitality sensor are two different things.

I don't mean to be rude but I don't think you should be doing thread VII as you are very uninformed about the console upon looking at your posts.

FF XIII was my first FF, and really my first JRPG, and yeah....it definitely killed my interest. Boring plot, boring and annoying characters, nonsensical story, no real tension with all the silliness, and they expect you to read back stories for stuff, like in the Codex from Mass Effect, but they don't get you invested by giving you a baseline idea about what these groups are about, so there's no incentive at all to look any further.

The Nintendo Wii U Speculation Thread Pre-E3 Survey

1) So.. how much will the Wii U cost? $349.99

2) And when will the Wii U's Launch Day be? November 18th, 2012

3) Your #1 Desired Launch Day Game? Pikmin 3 and a strong 3rd party lineup

4) Any pleasant third-party surprises for the Wii U? Aliens time exclusive at launch and League of Legends at launch first console version

5) Any predictions of media criticisms for Nintendo's behaviour/substance during E3 Week? One of 2 things will happen. The media will be hyping it to all hell and it's Nintendo so it'll be covered by major non-gaming magazines too. Other thing is people will say why do we need this when we have ipads and Nintendo have lost their "casual" market with too much focusing on the core.

6) What'll be your preferred food & drink of choice during the Nintendo Conference? Monster Energy and Doritos

7) How long will the Nintendo Conference go on, and what'll be the breakdown on time spent between Wii U amd 3DS? 1 hour 40 minutes, I'd say 70% on WiiU

8) Predict: rate the Wii U Launch lineup from 1 (worst) to 10 (best). 8

9) Predict: any final hardware revelations? Just a re-design on the system to show the difference between the Wii and WiiU

10) Predict: any super-special applications that Nintendo's gonna spring on us? Huge focus on f2p games and social, hence my guess on league of legends, maybe a different dota game, but ya.

11) Predict: With BP now gone, who's the Nintendo fan most likely to be banned from NeoGAF during E3 Week? AceBandage

12) Wild-card prediction: anything else? Gamecube HD games announced.

Get FF3 on virtual console and play it, trust me.

It's not really complicated. People simply want some of their favorite franchises to be good again. It's happened to Sonic, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, Castlevania (my personal opinion on Silent Hill and Castlevania differs, but I'm just one nerd). But again, show people a new installment of anything that looks like its back to understanding what made the series good in the first place and that alone would raise hype, and at the very least, awareness.

Despite some people disliking FFXII and a lot of people hating XIII, just theoretically speaking here obviously but if they were to show an exclusive for WiiU and it brought back that majestic, elegant and wondrous mood synonymous of FF from yesteryear I imagine the E3 conference building would quite literally burn to the ground.

Damn. This is borderline depressing. Not toward you, but just your circumstance there. It would be like being told that the Silent Hill games are incredibly scary and your first one is Shattered Memories.

To be fair, he still has 384 pages to learn about the console (Or 1.5 weeks ;) )

I have a Wii in the house, but it is a friend's console, but I may be able to swing that. If not I'll pick it up whenever the Wii U hits a dry spell.

Hahaha, yeah, I've heard that quite a few times. Seems I chose the absolute worst FF to jump in on.

Bar none. Out of the thirteen "main" installments, XIII is by far the worst one IMO. I feel that at least 7 or 8 of them are great, in some cases even amazing games, and then you have some mediocre to really good ones...

And then you have XIII.

Play Xenoblade & Chrono Trigger, I don't really like JRPG's but those 2 are pretty amazing(from what I have played so far).

Universal remote functionality would be pretty cool(especially if you can set up macros).

Was just skimming Linkedin again, looking for some new stuff, but what I found isn't really worth mentioning - a couple of shovelware devs like Torus, Sproing and some Mexican studio are now on board, but who cares? Anyway, I found one of the very best resumes ever: "Currently working on an unannounced game on an undisclosed platform for a studio I'm not allowed to name". :D

Sadly ya, FF has been downhill for quite awhile, but god damn the old days were so great. FF1-10 you can't go wrong (I'm not a huge 12 fan,but a lot of people are, not a bad game just not my thing).

There was another thread about JRPG's, and somebody suggested I check out IX as a starting game.

They gotta play it safe and not reveal all their shovelware at once. They don't want another B00SH incident. :p

In case you haven't noticed, I believe 75% of the users in this thread named you as the most likely to get banned during e3.

Hey ! IDEA TIME !

A NFC-Reader app for Wii U !

You'll put a NFC tagged dog found in the streets on the padlet, and it would give you its name, owner's location, etc !

I thought this was a genius idea because of how many dogs have these chips. On the microchip implant wiki it says that there is different types of chips, some with encryption. So i'm guessing there would be a compatibility issue there

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Why would you hope they don't moneyhat R*? Nintendo have done it in the past for important games & its probably the biggest 3rd party title to be in danger of not being for Wii U ( Given that AC3 is confirmed & Cod is highly likely as well as the EA Sports titles).

If you want something from Rockstar that Rockstar has no intention of offering, or attempt to secure exclusivity of any kind, the price you pay is high. Too high, in my opinion. Microsoft spent a completely absurd amount of money just to have timed exclusivity of two expansion packs.

Every cent Nintendo would spend getting anything from Rockstar I'd rather see spent on creating new games internally, or reaching out to independent devs to fund new projects. GTA V would be nice for Nintendo, but I'm not interested in Nintendo obtaining the best market position or playing the sales game. I'm interested in them making good games that I love to play. The reason I buy their consoles. And Rockstar don't fit anywhere in that vision.

There was another thread about JRPG's, and somebody suggested I check out IX as a starting game.

IX retains a lot of the old school elements/charm that people like about the franchise. Unfortunately it is plagued with a battle system that moves about as fast as a fly stuck in dried glue. Many, though, would argue that the art direction, music, characters and just overall atmosphere far outweigh some of the few shortcomings.

Just bringing that up because of how much more quick and smooth RPG battle systems are now in comparison. I love IX but every time I try to replay it the slowness of the battle system is an admitted hamper on my enjoyment.

"Sorry, you said you were working on a game. I'm afraid that's simply too much information to let out there on the internet. Go clean out your desk."

EDIT: almost as good as "New [REDACTED] and [OMITTED] for [CENSORED]"
