Okay, look... Stop shitting all over the potential for a good Mickey Mouse platformer again. That's all I want. I've been wanting one for over a decade now!

*weeps*

Then talk to Disney and tell them to stop shitting up their Mickey games. No need to tangle up a great Mickey game in a Nintendo project.

You know, I was thinking, wouldn't it be cool if Nintendo let players record their own gameplay videos and share them? Like a crowd sourced version of NSMBWii's auto-play feature.

Think about it.

But... Nintendo seems to be one of the few developers that can make a really awesome platformer... I needs them.

Nah, I think this one is setting up to be the best. Again IMO.

Hype yourselves up all you want, you'll have to deal with it when the train derails. Personally, I got burned from last year. I didn't even sleep the night before, and yet the Wii U reveal was so pedestrian and lacking. The only thing that made up for it was the 3DS stuff, and even that was lacking in third-party stuff compared to the previous E3.

Could this "Ubisoft will announce their Wii U games at their own conference because Nintendo has too much stuff" apply to EA, too?

EDIT: Shut up, Anth0ny!

This one will have actual games though.

They were magnificent, no doubt.. but I do wonder sometimes.

The main thing about the TP reveal is that back then, those in attendance allowed themselves to audibly react to what they were seeing. Nowadays, the audience seems to be filled with joyless, desperate-to-be-professional, stiffs.

The audience reaction - that outpouring of emotion - will probably never be seen again. And I think that's a big part of what the TP reveal has going for it when people look back fondly at that special moment in time. We all cheered along with them. We all felt what we were hearing coming from that crowd.

before twilight princess was announced, and the wind waker 2 was the upcoming zelda for the gamecube, i had an idea for a zelda game that would be revealed using a combination of oot's art and tww's cel-shaded style. the trailer would be revealed at the very end of the conference, just as sort of a, hey, by the way, just one last thing sort of casual mention. it would start off pretty vague (i had charging fort wagner in mind), and then build to a point where you see characters that might look familiar, but maybe not, and finally a glimpse of ganondorf in his non-pig form, signifying this was actually some sort of zelda game. the crowd would go insane.

and then it basically happened, although some of the minor details were mixed around. it was really weird. i was in high school at the time, so i didn't find out about it until lunch, and i didn't see the video/reaction until after school, but i was surprised at how close it got to what i had in mind.

the game i had in mind was going to be an experimental one. it wouldn't star link, but maybe someone directly related to him. there would be a heavy emphasis on the sword fighting, and it would be a direct prequel to ocarina of time, as well as set up the zelda backstory (i was thinking the early half of the game could be the zelda 2 backstory, and the last half would be the unification war that could have resulted from it, leading into oot).

im curious, how long has versus been in development?
Iirc it was in pre-production limbo for a long time and the real development didn't start until 2009 or something. Which makes its 2006 reveal even more idiotic in retrospect.

I.. I love that button.

Ice.. man.. I thought I knew you!
*cries*

...

And Anihawk, I'd love a game about the Unification War. To see how Hyrule came to be one country would be fantastic. In fact, I'd love for them to begin filling-in more gaps in Hyrulean history will games of that type of setting.

You talking about the leaked specs that were just posted in the new topic?

I do wonder if Sony will shoot for the moon again.

The specs in that thread aren't shooting for the moon. They're more blowing a hole in the moon on their way to the other side of the Milky Way.

Hm, mix of cel-shade look, OoT prequel, heavy swordplay. Sounds exactly like Skyward Sword.

You are psychic, my friend.

iirc, that's one of the ways the hint system idea was originally described. I think that would be fantastic.

No.

Haven't we learned anything from FF Versus, The Last Guardian, etc.? Showing games too early isn't a good thing.

Yes.

It burned them with HAMMER (technically D:DoC was released), but if they want HYPE they should, I feel, be showing off as much as possible. There'll (eventually) be a Kirby, Mario, Pokemon, Zelda and so on on the system. Show something. Excite people. Nintendo is not above showing things 2+ years away from launch at initial blow-outs (Animal Crossing 3DS, for example).

It may be unrealistic to expect them to show something for every franchise they intend to release, maybe, but there's huge potential for fan boy hype when showing off their games in HD for the first time. The leap between the Wii and Wii U in terms of output may be one of the biggest jumps in game tech, ever. Don't squander that.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.

Yeah I saw that and it made me SMH at Nintendo's unwillingness to compete™.

Versus is a lovely example of how useless top down game production is.

Showing everything is a bit much, but making sure that they have really obscene trailers for at least one of the big franchises and some of the smaller ones would get people hyping over the other big franchises anyway. Let people's minds do some of the work.

LOL at that PS4 thread.
I wonder if there's anyone on the planet dumb enough to think that's real?

See my comments about creative bankruptcy and the goal being to extinguish and existing fanbase and design in order to establish something new. In cases like that they're not making 'Star Fox'. They're making a new franchise and shoehorning the Star Fox label into it at the expense of the existing fanbase. It simply doesn't need to be, and is not a requirement to revive either Star Fox nor warrant the associated gameplay changes.

Some people noticed Retro's drastic changes to Metroid with Metroid Prime, and how people feared it being a first person shooter, as an example of doing something drastic with a franchise that people initially see as horrible. What people forget is that Metroid Prime's greatest achievement wasn't that it was a good game by its own merits, or that it validated the design direction, that it was that it did both of these while still being distinctly Metroid in experience, design, and thematics. It was to Metroid as Mario 64 was to Mario, and Ocarina of Time was to Zelda: a magnificent 3D imagining of a previously 2D franchise.

When I talk about rebooting a franchise, I'm talking about a tasteful reboot. Not turning it into something it's not. I don't think making Star Fox's world a little darker (like Majoras Mask/Twilight Princess dark) would hurt the franchise much. I think it would give Star Fox more of an edge that it needs.

The point is, Star Fox needs to evolve.

Mario, Zelda, and Metroid have all evolved successfully. Star Fox has not evolved successfully. And it's killing the franchise really hard.

Star Fox needs a "tasteful" reboot in the way Metroid Prime rebooted the Metroid franchises or Wind Waker rebooted Zelda after people were so use to the Ocarina of Time art style/vibe.

Star Fox needs a reboot that shocks gamers. A reboot that makes gamers go "Whoa...Did not expect this.." Something that stirs up debate. There's this perception that because Metroid: Other M wasn't the greatest game ever, that Nintendo should never experiment with their franchises again. And I find that to be super lame.

It's no wonder that Zelda has grown to be stale because gamers won't allow Nintendo to go beyond the Ocarina of Time formula that Nintendo has been using for 3D Zeldas since Ocarina of Time.

Gamers criticized Nintendo for making Zelda: Wind Waker cel shaded before it released in stores.

Gamers criticized Nintendo for making Metroid first person perspective before it released in stores.

Nintendo was right for doing those super risky decisions. Gamers were wrong.

I was around during Spaceworld 2000. I remember the chaos. I remember gamers calling Nintendo a bunch of idiots who are destroying all of their franchises. Honestly gamers don't always know what is good for them. And quite honestly, I'm tired of people using Metroid Other M and Star Fox Adventures as examples of why Nintendo shouldn't experiment with their franchises.

When crazy risky experiments work, you get Metroid Prime and Zelda: Wind Waker.

When crazy risky experiments don't work, you get Metroid Other M and Star Fox Adventures.

And the risky experiments that didn't work weren't even bad games. Just mediocre games.

Maybe a Star Fox x Metroid mashup is the wrong way to go, but something definately needs to change with Star Fox. And I'm sure you'll be hearing cries of Zelda becoming stale. You already hear people calling the franchise stale after Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword.

the weird part is i wanted it to lead into a oot remake and an oot remake came out in the same year as the oot prequel

oh, and the 'experimental' game would have voice acting. because link wasn't the star, so it would be okay.

that part didn't happen.

Bah, 'yer all a buncha young'uns. When I was 4 my dad bought one of these, and I played the heck out of it:

telstar+arcade+1.jpeg

Then when I was 7 or 8 we got an Atari 2600 and I REALLY played the heck out of that.

Then I think I was 12ish when we got an NES.

I like you. This was also my first video game system, too. Probably defined how I enjoy video games.

I don't think anthropomorphic animals and humans can ever co-exist

What if they're anthropomorphic humans?

Of course, that's a guarantee

Ye gods, this thread is fast today. And I'm gonna be away until Tuesday, crazy camping and all. It's gonna take until E3 to read what I missed probably!

Your suggestion isn't evolving Star Fox, it's changing Star Fox. It's looking at the franchise and saying "what should we take away", and then turning it into something else.

Metroid, Zelda and Mario did not evolve by doing this. They took their foundations and grew them. They played with existing ideas, themes and design to create fresh iterations.

Something does need to be done with Star Fox, but if doing that involves rebooting the series as a grim, serious overhaul then you might as well build a new serious flight sim franchise entirely. Doing this does not evolve Star Fox. It simply takes a title and stick it on something that's completely new.

What is top-down game production again?

Need a memory refresher, but a search on Google only gives me shmups. :p

A problem with a lot of outdated Japanese development policy, where the bosses high up in the company are calling all the shots, and 'low level' employees are restricted to doing exactly what they're told. Something not working with the game? Bugs? Design problems? Not playing well? The solution has to come down from above, rather than those working on the game quickly collaborating and coming to a solution of their own. It makes for incredibly slow, stupid development, especially on massive projects like Versus.

So basically Super Smash Bros Brawl.

Nah, Smash handled it poorly. It created its boring own universe where the characters exist as trophies and any allusions to the franchises the characters represented were extremely loose. I'd like to see an RPG with a competent writer.

I posted earlier: I can hear certain groups of gamers and journalists calling that device a "gimmick" already. Ha. Ha. Ha.

They shouldn't set hype to unrealistic heights by showing games that are actually never coming out. There are a ton of prototypes and games in production at Nintendo that never see actual release for some reason or another. Showing them to the public would sure be good in a short run but after a year two people would start to wonder where the hell those games are.

I'm all for a big show and spectacle but it shouldn't be created by showing things that are potentially 3-4 years from actual release and haven't been green-lighted for full production.

Don't worry. I'll be sure to make everyone not post 'till you come back home. And when you come back, we'll all be inside your house, and it will be a surprise party...just act surprised, their putting a lot of work into it.

Where's the love for the larger buttons? Best thing I've heard all day after those awesome PS4 specs!
Not sure I trust that the images were drawn to scale - even though you would imagine patents to be very technically exact, they still do this kind of thing:

Give the game to Treasure and tell them to make it hard without making it gritty or overly serious.

Capcom's Mickey games were the last great ones. I'm sure that if Capcom ever actually had the desire to make a plat former again, they could probably do it.

Ok, so why not show something from everything you have for the next 1-1.5 years? I'm not saying show something from every prototype ever!
