The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

I decided to get just one console next generation (I got all 3 this generation, and regretted it), and yes, I'm 100% behind the Wii-U. Nintendo makes more exclusives that I enjoy than the other two consoles, chances are high most multiplat games will have the best controls on Wii-U between Wii Remote and the touchscreen, and it's a darn safe bet that all multiplatform games will be on Wii-U. And my PC can pick up the slack.

Oh, and the fact that it's coming out in just a few months is a big point in its favor, rather than waiting until at least 2013, if not 2014 for the competition.
oh my, someone's optimistic. One can hope.

Why would that be in question? The *sole* reason the Wii didn't get multiplat releases was because the graphics architecture was just too different. Regardless of its power, the Wii-U is getting a GPU that can handle standard pixel/fragment shaders and OpenGL, and will have standard middleware packages. Even in a very early dev kit developers were able to port their games to the Wii-U in a very short amount of time. Developers/publishers don't like throwing away money, so if they release a game for the other two consoles, they'll do it for Nintendo as well.

For reals though. Is everyone here 100% getting the WiiU at launch, or is there anyone waiting to be sold at E3? I want to say "hey I'm definitely day 1" but so far...this is where I'm at: I may or may not want Pikmin 3 right away, depending on how it has come together.

So that's only 1 game I'm not sure I want day 1 or not even if I were to buy the console. Don't get me wrong, Pikmin is good and it's something I want to play, but not enough to sell me on hardware.

But I guess if Nintendo reveals good launch games and a good launch window then I'll jump in. Multiplat games don't count as I can get them without buying the wiiU, but if I do own that then I'll buy multiplat games for it to show support of course.

I don't need E3 to sell me. I just need the money. :p

What's wrong with David Cage? He directed Heavy Rain, one of my favorite games of 2010, and made a lot better when they released the Move patch for it. I think he could do well at Nintendo, they are missing deep stories in their games.

so is david cage.

i don't hate david cage, but i do think he's a lazy thinker and an awful writer

developers/publishers are an enigma, that's why. Also "lol nintendo". The prosecution rests. I'm just not ready to believe that they'll all be completely open with the wiiU. When I see the Kojima's next big game (not the one he said already isn't coming to wiiU, the one after) and squares next mainline final fantasy title (not versus, the next one), then I'll believe it.

Like I said, those 2 devs + From Software are the only I care about. And even though it's only 3 devs I care about, I still don't have faith that they'll do it. And I realize there's no rational reason to think so. But since when did that matter in this industry :p

Wow. I just don't see how you can think that. At least the writing part. What are you evern comparing his writing to? I thought it was solid overall.

Half a gig of RAM (or less) reserved for the software layer of the system, huh... So, what kinds of "apps" do you guys see coming to the system?

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Can we make a non-lurker-visible IRC for E3?

Why?

----

Btw, I saw it mentioned on chat that 2Gigs of Ram was confirmed or semi-confirmed. Anyone know where this came from? (If legit.)

The stream's only an hour this year? Huh for some reason I thought it'd be 1.5 hours again.

I think it will end up only being 256MB max by the time Nintendo is done optimizing etc. They are always very cautious with this stuff to the point of overkill. For instance having a dual core in the 3DS and initially reserving one entire core to non game functions.

The only way they keep it more than 256MB is they have some crazy features all running at once. PS3 uses around 98MB as it is and everything seems to indicate Nintendo is going for a more robust OS but 512or would be insane

I'll be there on Day 1, pretty much guaranteed. All I need is for Miyamoto to come out on stage and say, "Hey! My games are gonna be here!" and I'm done for.

I love Launch Day..

Kojima doesn't make multiplatform games. And Final Fantasy is in the same boat as everyone else - there's no way any developer would ever throw away money on the table. If they are already releasing a game on two systems, the cost of releasing it on the third will be very, very small, and will get that many more users. Even if the Wii-U flops - look at the PS3 in its first couple years, it sold horribly, but it still got the ports.

And as I said, we already know the Wii-U is easy to port to, we've had more than one developer say so.

Yes. It does sound rather bloated to me. Then again, it's not like I know what they're planing for it or anything. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised to see the amount decrease after optimizations and whatnot, but that would still leave a large chunk (larger than what we're used to, anyway) dedicated to it.

I'm excited to see what will come of it. :)

I've just discovered that my hype for this system is directly proportional to the activity level in this thread. My hype has unexpectedly dropped pretty dramatically over the past day.

Nintendo should go ahead and hire Grant Kirkhope. Give him lots and lots of money.

And make him compose Donkey Kong 64 2!

That's the point I brought up a couple pages ago. Of course, it's meaningless if it's just going to inflate in about 7-9 days. Just hold it in.

AH! This is where the WiiU speculation thread went. And you thought you could hide it from me GAF.

Well too bad! Now then... Erm... Where are the leaks? Do we know Retro's game yet? (I know we don't, but goddamn that's driving me insane.)

On a side note, if Retro -were- working on a Dr. Mario MMO, what do you think it'd be like?

(Yes, I'm really asking that question, for shits and giggles.)

Haha. I think that happened with quite a few people. Since it was so close to E3 and one of the original intents was to make it to E3 since we would get real news then, it would have been nice to finish the last couple of weeks and then just kill off the speculation threads. Well, that was my original intent at least.

If Dr Mario were an MMO with character classes to choose from, would the classes be different medical specialties? Like, could Proctologist Dr Mario have different skills from Neurologist Dr Mario?

Happy blah blah Ace!

This last stretch to E3 is going to be unbearable, Im kinda hoping now we only get little leaks, I want all the big surprises at once, i want to see the net burn the gaf crash and the naysayers weeping in the streets......or something.

Probably comparing to other narrative forms that have been around since humans have had language.

And that's not the only criticism of the story out there, that's just one that I remember from when it came out. Also I am now reminded of IGN calling GTA4's story "Oscar worthy".

Well if it has a general purpose ARM CPU as mentioned a few times it opens the doors up for some multitasking, like play a game on one screen, run a web browser or Netflix or whatever on the other. There's a lot of possibilities...but I'm keeping my hopes in check cause I have limited faith in Nintendo when it comes to stuff like this.

Wasn't he also the old voice for Donkey Kong? Because I preferred the monkey-like noises from his older voice clips to the moronic durr hurrs his current VA puts out.

Heavy Rain kept me riveted like no other game, so I'd say its storytelling was handled well enough, even if there's a flat note here or there. I don't care that the game "lied" to me; the reveal was still one of the most memorable twists in gaming, making you rethink everything up to that point.

Really, Heavy Rain's only real failing is it's not nearly as magical on a second play-through. That's why Cage said he'd prefer people just stick with one play-through. It's truly a game that's driven a great deal by the mystery of whodunit and the borderline horror movie aspect that has you paranoid about all the possible suspects.

Love the game. First half of 2010 was just fantastic, with Bioshock 2, then Heavy Rain, then God of War III, then Super Mario Galaxy, and then Red Dead Redemption. Damn. Good times!

That was sheer excellence. Thank you for this.

YW. :) I have a capture of all four looking at the screen. My original plan was to rotate through them, but when the threads took off I stuck with the second one as people began to associate with it. I've had them for years and only used them on another board I used to post on.

Another favorite child show moment of mine belongs to the Wiggles.

How come we don't have a 3DS speculation thread for E3??? I know there is a thread of "what does this thing have", but we need a thread for E3.

Penis-man with delicious tangerine foreskin for me.
Tangerine foreskin? Heck yes, hahaha.. those are two words I'd never put together.

So.. for those of you who are still awake: what do you plan on playing through the rest of this Nintendo generation?

I'm wrapping-up Fragile Dreams tonight, and then it's no gaming until after E3, 'cause I'll be too antsy. Then, it'll be a few months of getting every shine in the Mario Galaxy games, and then I'll spend a month or two with one single Elder Scrolls character (probably a heavily-modded game of Oblivion).

But my problem will be that once we get close enough to launch, my attention span is going to pretty much die. So all gaming in this household will most likely die come around September, and I'll be on here hitting F5 every five seconds. Does anyone else have that problem?

I got nothing, literally. I'm using Wii U to make up a decade of gaming as best as possible.

I don't think every system needs its own thread. Wii U has one because it's a new system and there are a lot of unknowns.

You're going to remember the Wii U very fondly, in that case, as you'll most likely get to play the best of the best of the past decade.

Nintendo always seems to have a very slow period before the release of its next consoles, and I always use that year or so to go back and play my favorite games from recent years. So, in a weird paradoxical way, I remember those slow-release years as some of my favorite gaming years. It's also probably why I wrinkle my brow when folks complain that there's nothing to play; it leaves me wondering if replaying old games is something that many people don't do anymore.

No matter, you're in for some good times, indeed.
