The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

I'm having the clear impression that the people most excited about this E3 are people that care about Nintendo. A lot of people aren't excited at all by E3 this year, I noticed.

Part of that is the other companies don't hold what they have so close to their vest and another part is LTTnongamesP.

I like watching the others launch new hardware, but purely for strategic and comedic purposes. :)

Otherwise, I'd be pumped for any E3 as long as new Nintendo games are being revealed. Seriously - this is as close as it gets to that magical Christmas-like feeling for this adult.

PS: anyone else completely avoiding the Gaming board over the next week?

i care about nintendo, but i expect this e3 to just be a bunch of third party multiplatform shit. games i can already play on multiple other systems aren't exciting.

here's hoping for good first party output and maybe some damn third party exclusives.
It's the same for everyone. Nothing beats the megatons, the swerves, the xclusivez.

I think Nintendo has to do a lot to mess up this year. But they are very capable of disappointing a lot of people. It will be fun to watch regardless

I think Sony will have a great show as well

only way Wii gets a mention is if they go back to sales charts

I could see them quickly noting some sales, cheaper games, A PRICE CUT!!!, and the Wii was so great, now let's forget about it outside of occasional sales reports to investors.

Just so you know.. MST3K pretty much defined my high school years. I get warm fuzzy feelings whenever I see allusions to it.

It would have mine as well had I known it existed. I found it just as the tv syndication was petering out to maybe an episode or two early saturday, well like around this time. One of these days I'll get back into it.

Sony could have nothing but The Last of Us and it would still be great. Throw in the other games we know about, the vita rescue mission, and these cloud rumors and things should be interesting. Looking forward to the 2 conferences.

$99 Wii? :)

all Wii Software downloadable on WiiU day 1 :p

Well we are in the 7th year of the 360, what is there to be that excited for? The 4th Halo game? Maybe there will a surprise announcement of the 4th Gear of War. No, it'll be kinect this dashboard that, and oh the 7th Call of Duty. Sony fans have Vita, well a few of them do, and a bunch of 3rd and 4th games. They both have a bunch of 4th, 5th, 6th multiplat sequels also. Maybe price cuts for systems they already own as well. I can see why they aren't all rushing to be the one to start the circle...

Well not all, but yeah pretty much. Maybe a new bundle.

yeah I see no reasons for Sony fans not to be Hyped... Vita will have some killer games no doubt its a must for Vita to survive

MS is kinda the wildcard here

Seriously I hope there's a good number of exclusives shown at Nintendo's conference.

The more 360/PS3 ports, the more dull the conference will be.

I only have 40 items to pick from, with 34 options still to fill in.

Give me some ideas, GAF!

Don't know about that. I mean, I have no idea if or how this could be efficiently accelerated beyond what Nvidia and AMD are already doing.

What about some type of modifications to the texture samplers? While trying to learn more about the original subjects of discussion I came across this document from 2008.

http://developer.amd.com/media/gpu_assets/Tatarchuk-Tessellation_GDC08.pdf

On page 19 there was a diagram for the vertex shade and the texture sampler stuck out to me.

A person who did a series on the graphics pipeline has one section dedicated to texture samplers.

http://fgiesen.wordpress.com/2011/07/04/a-trip-through-the-graphics-pipeline-2011-part-4/

With Larrabee texture samplers were the only fixed function units utilized.

http://www.streetdirectory.com/etoday/intels-larrabee-gpu-wufpuo.html

How it works

The key difference between Larrabee and all previous graphics chips is programmability. The latest DirectX 10 GPUs from AMD and NVIDIA may be much more flexible and programmable than their progenitors, but they retain a wide range of fixed function units for texture sampling, rasterization, geometry setup and more. Only the shader units are truly programmable and even those are much less flexible than a general purpose CPU.

A series of pipes

With Larrabee, the entire rendering pipeline is handled in software by a battery of small x86 cores. The only fixed function units are texture samplers, which Intel says allow for more efficient texture throughput and anisotropic filtering. In effect, therefore, the chip's entire computational resources can be used to attack the most complex task at any given moment in time. In systems with up to 32 cores, benchmarking shows performance increasing in approximately a linear fashion relative to the number of processing cores.

http://www.techarp.com/showarticle.aspx?artno=575&pgno=3

The Larrabee Texture Sampler

One of the fixed-function units in the Larrabee processor is a texture sampler. Like the texture unit in a graphics processor, it is capable of performing the usual texture operations, like texture decompression and anisotropic filtering. It communicates with the x86 processing cores via the L2 cache so data access is even faster.

Intel chose to use a fixed-function texture sampler because texture filtering requires specialized data access to unaligned 2x2 blocks of pixels. Texture filtering is also optimized for 8-bit colour values. Finally, the dedicated texture sampler can perform texture filtering 12X faster (40X faster if texture decompression is necessary) than the x86 core.

Oh and maybe Nintendo came up with some kind of hybrid ray-tracer/rasterizer for the GPU. :p

*paging AlStrong, blu, and Thraktor to chime in also* :)

Yeah but it had a bad start. The basis is still a port.

I think with how early it was in development and with my definition of what a port is, I can't call it a port. I don't consider changing/shifting the development platform a port. They never came close to releasing KF for PS360 let alone actually releasing it.

What do you think to the 6770 rumors bg ?, now that would be a beast of a console with 2GB's of Ram and a decent CPU.

Not much has been said about the CPU, will it just be a faster 360 like tri core CPU i take it ?.

Getting really excited now it's getting closer !.

We have a lot to look forward to before next Tue aswell.

The fourth Game Trailers preview is on Sun (third parties) then the pre E3 Game Trailers show with exclusive content ect is a week today, then we have a weekend of possible leaks and then Sony / MS on Mon :).

Altho i have been looking forward to this 'rereveal' all year I have only been posting here for a couple of months and the weeks have dragged so i can only imagine what you guys are feeling that have been posting / waiting since last E3 !.

Well done for sticking in there and i hope Wii U is everything you hope it is and more.

As mentioned multiple times that rumor was fake as it was all over the place. At the same time that GPU combined with what Nintendo seems to be adding would put Wii U almost, if not completely, on par with the other next gen consoles. There hasn't been anything to indicate that as being true. Also nothing I've seen mentioned suggests that the CPU is just a "souped up" Xenon.

For me the WUSTs have helped make the time pass by rather quickly. I expected the thread just to be a "garbage disposal" for vague news bits, but it grew well beyond what I expected.

Some of those I've already got; I've added a list of the item pool below the grid.

People are leading you to believe that third partys will be a focus of the show but they won't be the star of it, never are.

I understand that Nintendo will be the star of their own conference. And I'm happy with that.

But if Nintendo wants to get Xbox/Playstation fans to rally around a Nintendo system, they need a few big third party exclusives. Otherwise the Wii U will just become a console that only Nintendo fans buy for Nintendo franchises.

And personally, I don't think Nintendo wants that. They don't want to go from Wii levels of marketshare, and shrink back down to GameCube levels of marketshare.

Oh man guys,

just 10 days. Hype is starting to build :)

I still remember the day when we celebrated: "Less than 100 days! WOO! Just double digits from now on!"

Yeah, not sure, I think there'll be a few third party exclusives but not sure their overall impact.

I bet Nintendo finally brings back StarTropics.

:(

I will cry and squeal like a little girl if they ever do that.

Which is a reminder.. I need to have the curtains drawn when I go to watch this conference. I don't want folks peeping in, seeing me weep if anything ultra-happy happens.

Nintendo fans: "THIS WEEK ROCKS! I love it! This is going to be SOOO GOOOOD!"
Gaming media: "Meh. Not too bad. For now. Not that big a jump. The controller is so-so. And just wait until the others launch."

maybe everyone will wind up loving it. people loved the dreamcast when sega was about to go third party too.

I would verify it if it came out. Not sure when it might come out. It wouldn't necessarily have to come out at or right after E3.

if you PM me the secret I promise not to tell anyone and also wear one of your penis headed furry friends as an avatar I see they come in different colors so you can choose the color... deal?

Hey, any 3DS Big game rumors or partnerships that might be revealed at press conference?

Just 10 days left yet it feels like it's going to go by slowly. Well, at least we will start hearing some yummy news beforehand.

fine then, did not want to be a furry penis head anyway :)

Tell me your secrets bg, I'll probably be banned before I could tell anyone anyway.

I have faith in you that you'll survive. :p

Define people. I knew and was around a fair number of gamers at the time and the sole positive thing I ever heard about the Dreamcast was some guy saying the NFL game he was playing at the EB Games kiosk looked better than the N64 NFL games.

Also, much much less anectdotal, sales.

I have some plans for this week. Lots of overtime, lots of call, Spring cleaning, running errands around town so that they aren't hanging over me during E3, a major grocery shopping trip for all sorts of junk foods, the breaking-in of a new TV (plasma IR reduction protocol), etc etc.
By the time E3 arrives, my house will be super-clean, my fridge stocked full, my bills and business all tended-to, and my family/friends/workplace aware that they probably shouldn't be calling on me that week.

But some time ago, GameplayWhore and I discussed the idea of a marathon for next weekend. A marathon viewing session, with all of us Speculation Thread regulars present, for the Saturday night before E3, probably starting sometime around 8PM, CST. I'm currently in the process of obtaining every Nintendo E3 conference video from 2006 through 2011 so that we can watch them all on that evening. It'd be a great time to reflect on where we've been, and where we're going. This has been a shocking and fascinating past 6 years, and I hope that the next 6 can bring the same kind of awe-inspiring, memorable moments.

I've never done this kind of broadcast before, so I'll be tinkering with Justin.tv's "broadcast from desktop" procedure over the next week. This'll be a learning experience for me, but so far it seems like it should be doable. :)
