Since one of the best SMT spinoffs ever is getting a 3DS port, figured we could use a more comprehensive thread, offer to YHVH as sacrifice if old.

So why is Soul Hackers so awesome?

amamicity.png

Amami City, 1997. A coastal city designed to be a technological paradise and testing ground for a virtual reality world, Paradigm-X. This was made possible by funding from the Algon Software Corporation, the developers of Paradigm-X. The city provides citizens with free computer and internet access: via terminals situated all over the city, allowing users unlimited access to Paradigm X's network at will.

It is here that a young group of hackers called the Spookies discover that Paradigm X has darker intentions than just luring people into cheap monthly wifi services: they traffic in human souls.

Worse, they consort with devil summoners, and as any demon tamer can tell you, only a devil summoner can stop another devil summoner.

Amami City is about to e-x-p-l-o-d-e.

The 3DS version is a port of the PS1 update to the Saturn classic, which added new dungeons and events to an already substantial title. R&D1 at their A-Game.

For whatever reason, it never came out here.

Second time's the charm.

Observation: Music samples, does NOT sound revised. Sounds just like the original.
Comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHnI6e6l3bE (Hotel Gouma-Den, Victor's boat mansion.)

You can also hear voice acting samples there, at least for everyone's favorite servant girl.

Also, Spookies Logo Gift For You!

Also, here's some screens from the other thread c/o Turnip:

In closing, some of my favorite Soul Hackers music.
Spookies
Town Map
Normal Battle
Algon Headquarters

Do not let Atlus USA miss their second chance.

This game does not deserve to get passed up again.

I really like the vibe this game has. Very moody. Or at least, these shots remind me of why I'm interested in this game... apart from my being an SMT whore.

Also, Soul Hackers has my favorite of Victor's designs.

Hope the resign doesn't botch it, if he gets one.

Also, some videos I did if you'd like to see SH in action:

Dr. Victor
Fusion

Most non-spoilery gameplay vid I could find:

Associated vids tend to have spoilers, fair warning.

3DS is finally getting the games.

still not digging the anime.

This game is the reason I now own a 3DS.

Digging into the JP site now, there's samples for Spooky, Six, and Hitomi & Nemissa.

The character page is a map of the Gouma-Den; classy.

Lots of space for a Victor section!

So what's the gimmick of this game? How is it different from the mainline SMT games or Persona?

-Full-on modern-futuristic cyberpunk setting.
Hacking, computers, power plants, warehouses, cybernetic corporate HQs, gang warfare, it's all there.
-The demons in battle are animated like in Strange Journey.
Spell animations are done as overlayed 3D animations. Should look hot on the 3DS.
-Amazing dungeon draw distance.
3-27.png

Some of the best looking dungeons they've ever done.
-Gameplay is fast, fluid, and potentially brutal. Main character dies, it's over.
-Demon conversation! Also has L/N/C demon alignment, but not determined by main's alignment. L and C can't be in the same team.
-Amazing story, full of wild twists and turns, and Vision Quests where you possess the bodies of devil summoners from the past.

Yeah, this is unquestionably a day 1 purchase for me. I always thought Soul Hackers had the coolest setting.

So a North American release hasn't been confirmed? I'd totally get this.

That's one of those 'I'm sure you'll know' developments.

The JP site has English text and copyrights, which gives me faith. Heck, we got Innocent Sin on a dead system. The 3DS is on fire right now.

I'd say it's just a question of when.

I wonder if Atlus USA is willing to go all out with full voice on this like they did for Overclocked.

Put that Demon's Souls cash to work!

I just recently started playing SMT: Devil Survivor Overclocked, so I'll get this as well if it hits North America.

Love the character designs, but I still haven't recovered from the 70-hour kick in the balls that was Strange Journey.

Soul Hackers' dungeons aren't nearly as brutal, they're a lot more linear.

There are two hellish ones in particular, though...

So, it's mostly about the setting.

I will get it if this comes over, I have a thing for SMT games... even if I don't play them [all], I get them. It's odd.

I am thrilled to see a great game come to the 3DS.

Huh, so its not like the Devil Summoner series on DS? I'm trying to finish overclocked and couldn't wait and already started Devil Summoner 2 and i'm loving those games.

There are no Devil Summoner games on DS. That's Devil SURVIVOR. Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is a first person, turn based RPG. Devil Survivor is a turn based SRPG.

That's Devil Survivor, not Summoner.

Shit I keep doing that, sorry. So soul hackers is like Wizardry then? sounds interesting, i'd like another Survivor game with new demons but this does look interesting. Hope it gets localized, Atlus has been pretty good about that.

This is the only reason that is going to get me to buy a 3DS soon. I've been wanting to play this ever since I discovered the existence of SMT series.

-That game's being localized, this isn't yet. Hype builder for localization drive.

-I'm doing the OT.

-No new info. When the US site goes live(*tap tap tap*), I'll make a thread for it and try to make it hype.
Right, you should be building hype for games people can actually play soon.

Find me some new news to post and I will. I don't want to just randomly throw together a thread for hype sake. I need a catalyst.

The OP's gonna be ridiculously comprehensive, too.

I've been wanting to play this since I knew enough about the SMT games to look them up on the internet. Looks like a standout entry.

You're far from the only one so don't feel too bad about it. I'm kinda hoping Atlus puts an emphasis on Soul Hackers for the west to avoid confusion, especially since the first game wasn't released here either.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy. Can't wait. Maybe Atlus will announce NA localization at E3 like they did last year with Devil Summoner 2.
This is not Devil Survivor.

Considering how different the game is even from the other Devil Summoner games (that we did get) Atlus should probably just call it Shin Megami Tensei: Soul Hackers.
