April 27, 2012 was Kirby's 20th Anniversary, that's right. 20 years since the release of Kirby's Dreamland for the Gameboy. For me personally, it was 20 years ago this summer since I and my brother rented it and played it for the Gameboy. The game was light, cartoony, and well...dreamy. Like no platformer we'd played before and the inhale 'n float mechanics were very innovative for the time. The graphics were lovely for an old B&W Gameboy game.

This thread is meant to discuss your favorite memories of the cutest, toughest 'lil platform hero ever in the lead up to the release.

What do you love most about Kirby?

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

What copy ability is your favorite?

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

While you're mulling that over, let's start off with some history (some of which you may not be aware of, via Wikipedia):

Kirby's father, Masahiro Sakurai

sakurai.jpg

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masahiro_Sakurai

Did you know?

-That Sakurai was only 19 years old when he created Kirby at HAL Laboratory?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirby_(character)

-That Kirby was originally a "blob placeholder" character named Popopo? His first depiction:

Popopo.jpg

Kirby was originally named Popopo, and his model was created as a blob placeholder sprite during the development of what would be the first Kirby game, originally titled 'Twinkle Popopo' instead of the current Hoshi no Kābī (translated as 'Kirby of the Stars').[3] After a while, creator Masahiro Sakurai started to prefer Kirby's placeholder design over the original concept.

-That Sakurai always intended Kirby be pink but Miyamoto wanted him to be yellow? The real root of the confusion:

As Kirby's first appearance was on the monochrome screen of the Game Boy, his "true" color could not be represented in-game. Sakurai intended Kirby to be pink. However, Shigeru Miyamoto had envisioned him as yellow. Because of this ambiguity, Nintendo of America was left with some confusion when the game was ported to the West. The American box art, cartridge label, instruction booklet, and even the television commercial for Kirby's Dream Land features Kirby entirely white in color. The Japanese box art, however, depicts Kirby as light red.

-That Kirby's name may possibly have a connection to a vacuum cleaner company and/or Nintendo's epic victory over Universal Studios regarding Donkey Kong?

One widespread view is that Kirby adopted his Western name from the Kirby Corporation, a vacuum cleaner manufacturer, leading to the belief the name is a play on Kirby's ability to inhale just about anything. The other possible explanation is that Kirby was named in honor of Nintendo's legal counsel, John Kirby of Latham & Watkins LLP, who represented them in the courtroom during a copyright infringement lawsuit over Donkey Kong filed by Universal Studios. However, Masahiro Sakurai has been quoted as saying he does not remember how Kirby got his name. (if either possible origin have even the slightest bit of truth, you can't blame him for not wanting to comment, especially regarding the Hoover corporation, plus preserving the magic of the character and all. :D )

Personality and abilities:

Abilities
Kirby's main attack is inhaling enemies (both his mouth and body expand to allow him to inhale things much larger than himself) and swallowing them. He can also attack others by spitting enemies out as star-projectiles. Certain enemies, when swallowed, grant Kirby new powers called Copy Abilities.

In Kirby's Dream Land, Kirby did not have Copy Abilities. He collected power ups, such as a mint leaf, which enabled him to shoot out endless air pellets for a limited amount of time, and curry and chicken(which makes a reappearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as Superspicy Curry), which let Kirby shoot out fireballs from his mouth until the item's effect wore off or he lost a life.

Kirby has a positive attitude, and helps to save Dream Land through the use of his unique powers. His age is never stated, although he is called a "little boy" in the manualfor Kirby's Dream Land, literally acts like a baby in the anime, and is referred to as being a "pretty jolly guy" in Kirby Super Star.[11] This, along with his high-pitched voice, suggests that Kirby is young.

Species

While Kirby is the one most often emphasized, he is not the only member of his kind. His similar kind is evidenced by similar looking characters seen in the ending of Kirby's Dream Land, the remake Spring Breeze in Kirby Super Star, and potentially Meta Knight along with the final boss of Kirby Super Star Ultra's Meta Knightmare Ultra, Galacta Knight, who appears to look nearly identical to Kirby. In Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, "Kirby's Return to Dream Land" and Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, different colored Kirbys appear as other players in multi-player games. In the case of the latter, they are the result of Kirby being divided into four by Dark Meta Knight. In general, members of the species all look similar, but sometimes have different colored skin, eyes, and feet. They are commonly referred to as Kirbys, just as 'Yoshi' in the Mario series is the name of both the species and character. As a name, however, 'Kirby' refers to only one character. Terms like creampuffs or puffballs are also used to describe the species, referring to their soft, round appearance.

In the English manual of Kirby & the Amazing Mirror, the term Kirbys is used at points, to illustrate the feature of having four differently colored versions of Kirby active in the game simultaneously. Another common term is Dream Landers, a term used in the instruction manual for Kirby's Adventure. This term, however, also refers to anyone who lives in Dream Land, including characters like King Dedede. The biography of Kirby in Super Smash Bros. Brawl says Kirby is a citizen of Dream Land.

In the anime, Kirby has also been called a Star Warrior, along with Meta Knight and other characters that have appeared in the Kirby animated series. It's a common belief that this refers to their species, but this is untrue as there is another person referred to as a Star Warrior who looks nothing like them.

There are countless Kirby sequels and this has been both a boon and a bittersweet motivation for Sakurai to keep trying new ideas. One could theorize this road of experience may have been influential as to why Sakurai indicated recently that he personally has no plans for a sequel to Kid Icarus uprising at this time. The road to founding Sora:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masahiro_Sakurai

Sakurai resigned from his position at HAL Laboratory on August 5, 2003, leading many to believe that the Kirby and Super Smash Bros. series would cease to continue. Reasons for his departure are said to be because he was seeking more freedom and was not happy with the structure that was present at HAL Laboratory. Most of all, however, Sakurai grew tired of the sequelization of the industry and at HAL.

"It was tough for me to see that every time I made a new game, people automatically assumed that a sequel was coming," said Sakurai 21 days later, in an interview with Nintendo Dream, two weeks after his resignation from HAL Laboratory. "Even if it's a sequel (laughs), lots of people have to give their all to make a game, but some people think the sequel process happens naturally." His resignation came just days after an interview where he openly criticized the company for circumstances surrounding the development of the Nintendo GameCube racer Kirby Air Ride. He has publicly stated that he wishes HAL to continue working on the Kirby series. After he left HAL, Sakurai began working with Q Entertainment, along with Tetsuya Mizuguchi. This collaboration resulted in Meteos, a unique puzzle game for the Nintendo DS.

On September 30, 2005, Sakurai announced that he had formed his own company, Sora.

Well, those are some of the best bits I can dig up, enjoy the thread and discussing Kirby!

It's interesting hearing him whinge about "sequelitis" in HAL Laboratory, yet now - bar Kid Icarus, which you can tell he's had an absolute blast making - all he's making are sequels, sequels, sequels to Smash Bros. (two at a time!). He seemed annoyed last year when they prematurely announced SSB U/3D, though very confident when stating that there's no Kid Icarus sequel planned.

It would be a shame if continual Smash Bros. meant he left his company - unless he wanted to them - because, as Kid Icarus has proven, he is such a damn fine developer.

Now, the quiz ~

What do you love most about Kirby?
The general atmosphere and feeling of the games - Kirby is such a joy to control, there's a lot of freedom in your approach to levels, and the music is just wonderful.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

I've yet to play the two Wii adventures, but my favourite game in the series is definitely Kirby Super Star. There's just so much creativity and variety in the game, and it captures that Kirby feeling mentioned earlier so perfectly. Furthermore, the diversity in Kirby's abilities and their range of commands was just such a joy to explore - Ness' Yo-Yo was easily my favourite one, along with the Plasma.

Yo-yo_icon.png
<---- There aren't enough Mother references in games... (; _ ;)

My least favourite would have to be the first GB game, purely because it's so primitive and simple. I'd say the most underrated entry would have to be...well, I'm not so sure - I've never truly engaged in conversation with someone about the Kirby series?

Who is your favorite character or villian?

Dyna Blade <3

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet?
As an Australian, I've currently playing through my eShop release of Kirby's Dream Land 2 :p So there's not too much left, really!

I'd really like for them to get transferable, single-account Virtual Console games running on both 3DS and Wii U. I want to buy Kirby's Dream Land 3, play it on my Wii U, move it to my 3DS and play it on the go with the same save file. I want full SNES & N64 emulation on my 3DS and the ability to "transfar" VC games please!

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

I'd like to see a really limited run to make it a true collector's item (though one that covers their costs) and for it to include a proper art book (one as comprehensive as Hyrule Historia, for example), a 20th anniversary Kirby figurine (make it a Nendoroid/Figma/Revoltech please!) and Wii U eShop codes for Super Star, Dream Land 3, Kirby 64, plus Air Ride, Epic Yarn & the recent Wii adventure in HD on disc, along with 3DS eShop codes for Adventure 3D, Dream Land, Dream Land 2, those spinoffs like Block Ball and a cart with Canvas Curse, Squeak Squad & Mass Attack <3

I know I say codes, but quite frankly I don't want to have to stick a cart in to play a GB game :/

We all know it's going to be dodgy like the Mario/Dragon Quest compilations though :p

Yeah, I think Smash U premature announcement might possibly have had a bit of an impact on his insistance on no Uprising sequel plans.

It would be a shame if continual Smash Bros. meant he left his company - unless he wanted to them - because, as Kid Icarus has proven, he is such a damn fine developer.

This. Hopefully Smash "sequelitis" won't burn him out again like with what happened at HAL.

I actually want Dreamland 2 the most myself, you guys are really lucky to have it on your eshop already. Last time I played it was renting it along with a Super Gameboy waaaay back in 1994.

Well, he was visiting Platinumgames recently. People dreamed about a Sora x Platinum collaboration, but could he have been scouting for employment opportunities?

Just be prepared to play a black & white version of the game. Typical Nintendo not adding colour options :(

Ah, Kirby's Dreamland... I remember playing that for the first time. So adorable. And the music! Made me really happy. After that... I didn't play a lot of Kirby games anymore. The traditional suck-and-shoot gameplay along with the carefree nature became a bit dull... My favourite games in the series are the ones that aren't traditional Kirby titles, but ones which are totally different. Power Paintbrush/Canvas Curse was one of the first DS game that demonstrated the potential of touchscreen controls and I loved it. Very unique and the levels are a bit more challenging compared to other Kirby offerings.

My favourite however might be Epic Yarn. First trailer sold me on the concept and when I started playing... I've never said "aaah that's cute!" that many times during a game.

What do you love most about Kirby?

Adorable, kicks ass, and eats a lot. He's a very charismatic character with such a simple design.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Favorite has to be Amazing Mirror, least favorite was Epic Yarn, and underrated goes to Canvas Curse. That game was stellar.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

Meta Knight for being basically the Batman of the Kirby series.

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)

Honestly anything.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

Mass Attack has these amazing minigames, I want a ton of those + option for multiplayer. That'd be amazing, I always go back to those games.

I'M GONNA NEED A MONSTA TO CLOBBA DAT DER KIRBEH!

I LOVE Kirby! :D

First knew this sucker in Smash 64, ever since (and jokingly) day 1 I always saw him as a sister IP to Pokemon. I mean just have him suck up Jigglypuff or Pikachu when yellow! :D

Then I got Kirby 64 as my first one, which I still adore today and have it on the VC.

Then I got Air Ride and love this to BITS, I was so excited for "Kirby Adventure"/Lirby Wii and then it never came out. :'(

But it basically evolved to Return to Dreamland, and I also love it! It's like 64 2, but without ability mixing and the slight angle change, and the shards are replaced by the cogs.

I also rented Epic Yarn and adore what Good Feel has created, I want to see them take on Yoshi's Island visually with EAD doing the gameplay and music. AND to make a Geomon for Wii U (GF is basically the old Geomon team). just imagine what they can do with a Japanese painted-style game for Geomon, like the DS game box.

So excited for whatever comes to Wii U. I'd kill for Air Ride 2!

Also I tried Canvas Curse, it was fun when I rented it. :)

And I have Dreamland 1 on the 3DS VC via Club Nintendo, it's a nice little thing. :)

To finish off; Kirby, you fucking suck, and we wouldn't want you any other way! XD

What do you love most about Kirby?

The copy powers and his adorable style

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Super Star is my favorite, Amazing Mirror is my least favorite, Canvas Curse and Dreamcourse are my two underrated gems.

Who is your favorite character or villain?

Meta Knight for both

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)

Dreamland 2 for me as well

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

A making/history of Kirby with Sakurai as our host.

Love this series, one of my favorites. My sister and I played the crap out of Super Star as kids and my friends and I constantly pull out Return to Dreamland for 4 player mayhem

What do you love most about Kirby?

The series? The pure platforming bliss while a cheery tune plays in the background. The character? He's so adorable.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Favorite would be Air Ride (Super Star Ultra as far as the platformers go), least favorite probably Squeak Squad, and underrated Dream Land 2.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

Zero.

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet?

I'd like to see Toy Box both localized and given an eShop release.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

A gigantic minigame compilation.

What do you love most about Kirby?
The games or the blob itself? well i'll answer both.
For the most part the games work as a sort of comfort food for me, they're consistently good and sometimes they're even great, while the games never quite crack my all time favourites they are good fun and that's what I like the most about the games. And the music gives off vibes of joy.
As for Kirby himself, actually i'm not that fond of the character, I do like the kirby hats and Yellow or Emerald Kirby is the colour of choice. Props also to the suicidal suplex moves in smash bros.
Animal Kirby is my favourite ability off the top of my head, pretty much the best part of Squeak Squad/Mouse Attack.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?
Canvas Curse (or Power Paintbrush) and Epic Yarn fight for the top spot, Canvas Curse is a great fresh take on platforming and a very good example of touch control, Epic Yarn is an enjoyable experience from start to finish.
Least Favourite, actually i'm not too big on Mass Attack, i've yet to finish it, stages are long and the gameplay can drag. I usually prefer the different approaches to Kirby but this one isn't clicking with me.
Underrated award goes to 64, playing around with powers reaches its zenith in this entry.
For traditional entries Adventure/Nightmare in Dreamland and Adventure Wii are probably the best.

Who is your favorite character or villain?
Dedede all the way
As an aside Meta Knight is a character I feel I should really like as he has various bits of design that I love (Mask, Cape, Bat wings!) but he just doesn't reach he heights i'd expect, maybe it's too much of a good thing.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?
It turns into my long awaited Donkey Kong anniversary disc that doesn't exist because Nintendo are gits.....
Okay serious answer: I expect console only games so, Adventure, 64, Dreamland 3 and Superstar. That would be fine for me, but since i've never played air ride i'd like to see that as well but I consider it a longshot.
As for extras, art, music and all that stuff, give it to me! How about a CD of remixes by the series composers?

And finally BUTTER BUILDING!

Best Kirby game is Wii's Return to Dreamland. It's not Superstar. Quality > quantity.

RtD has the best level design of the series. The game deals excellently with Kirby's potential ability to just fly over the levels. It really balances Kirby's "invincible" abilities well and adds a nice challenge for a Kirby game.

I'd just like to say that the 3D Classics version of Kirby's Adventure looks really, really good. The eShop trailer absolutely does not do it justice.

So many good memories of playing Super Star. Bio Spark, Plasma Wisp and Knuckle Joe, all day.

As for the collection?

The only thing I could really ask for is if the on disc version of Super Star is just the upgraded DS version with all the nice extras (sans the need for a second screen, obviously). But I sincerely doubt Ninty/Hal would do anything of sort.

We did a drawing a day for Kirby's 20th over on 4 color rebellion. It was a blast. Our friends like Gabe Swarr, Mare Odomo, Rey Ortega, Kyatt Suai, Michelle Coffee, Nate Carle and even myself all did drawings of our favorite pink puffball. I think they turned out great.

Check it out here and let us know what you think.

Kirby's not really a platforming series. You can infinitely fly most of the time. What kinda platforming is that??

Also, are there any links to Brawl in the Family here? I think there should be.

What do you love most about Kirby?

He's the puffball version of a Jack of All Trades. He can do anything, anywhere.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

My favorite in the series is Super Star (ultra version as well). The game had an almost endless replay value. I think Kirby Air Ride was a game that was unfairly narked on because it was "too easy". I still play it to this day. My least favorite has to be Squeak Squad. It was alright at heart, but something felt off about it to me. I think it focused too much on the treasure hunting part. Kinda short too.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

The bandana wearing Waddle-Doo is boss.

Which is your favorite game in the series?
See above

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)

Same

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

HD? Multiple characters? The awesome amount of "Vault" content that Sonic Mega Collection had?

Oh yeah, forgot to fill in the poll.

What do you love most about Kirby?

He sucks and blows

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Favorite: Kirby's Super Star
Least Favorite: Kirby's Dreamland 2
Most Underrated: Kirby's Dreamland 3

Who is your favorite character or villain?

Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright

Which is your favorite game in the series?

Isn't that basically the same as question 2?

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet?

The SNES version of Kirby's Star Stacker. It's the only one I can think of really, and it's a rare game.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

Every single Kirby game, or at least the none DS Kirbys due to the touch screen.

Furthermore, the diversity in Kirby's abilities and their range of commands was just such a joy to explore - Ness' Yo-Yo was easily my favourite one, along with the Plasma.

Yo-yo_icon.png
<---- There aren't enough Mother references in games... (; _ ;)

How do we know that's a Ness reference and not a Star Tropics reference? I mean, Mike's main weapon IS a Yoyo, while Ness has a Yoyo once or twice in the game.

That avatar is great. If I was a bigger Kirby fan I would totally steal it. Sadly, I've only played maybe half of the Kirby games. I always enjoyed them, but I've never really been a die-hard fan. Played the hell out of the one on the SNES with all the different modes and whatnot on the main menu.

He is adorable while killing enemies in one swallow. The man's a true champ!

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Kirby Super Star for the SNES is awesome. I could play that game for months on end and never complain about "repetitiveness". The colors, the music and simple platforming make for an enjoyable experience. Don't get me wrong, I love my complex/difficult platforming as well, but Kirby's laid back style in Super Star (and in the series in general) takes the cake for me. It does have slow-down, however. This is fixed in Super Star Ultra, but while it is also very good, it can never take my heart like its SNES father did.

My least favorite is the puzzle game, Kirby Avalanche. It's a really boring title, just a spin-off, but even so.

Most underrated probably has to go to Kirby and the Amazing Mirror. I feel like no one talks about that game anymore. When I first played it, I couldn't put it down, got everything in it. I only played with one other person, but it was all I needed! Fun title.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

Hero (besides Kirby): Ricky

Villain: Marx

Which is your favorite game in the series?

Again, Kirby Super Star

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet?

Kirby's Dream Land 2, for the simple reason that I haven't played it yet.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

I would like better menu presentation also extras, extras, EXTRAS! Sound effects, music, concept art, small figure, giant figure, hoodie! Give me it all!

Kirbys Adventure is king. All the other traditional Kirbys felt like inferior copies that were just missing... something.
Epic Yarn and Mass Attack were amazing, I didn't quite feel the first experimental game on DS with the line drawing.

Best part about any Kirby game really is the constant fan service, despite always aiming for younger audiences, there's always well made references to past entries.

Firstly: StarTropics? Cow Mengde pls, that IP was dead. They didn't even release the sequel in Japan.

Secondly: HAL Laboratory also assisted in Earthbound's development.

Thirdly: The icon resembles both Ness' cap and the Earthbound File Select screen. Mike doesn't even wear a cap :/

To top this all off, I just found out that when Kirby inhales Ness on SSB, he wears his cap backwards ala the yo-yo ability! <3 Easter Eggs

Ah, Kirby. One of Nintendo's most elite--but misused--series. I really want to see Sakurai return to create another epic Kirby game that would surpass his magnum opus (Kirby Super Star), but the Smash series basically took KSS and evolved on it.

Survey says:

What do you love most about Kirby?
Its rich history. The games have been [mostly] rock-solid since the very first title. From the animal companions to the copy abilities; from the enemy and boss designs to the level artwork; from the music to the game mechanics; Kirby is an incredibly varied franchise.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?
Kirby Super Star is a timeless gem. There was so much content packed into that game for its time... amazing. Also, it was a direct precursor to the Super Smash Brothers franchise. Don't believe me? Check out how the movesets are. "B" plus a directional input for special attacks? Exact same motion inputs as in KSS. Countless goodies and fanservice items hidden in the level? That was in KSS too, most notably in the phenomenal "Great Cave Offensive." KSS had so many games, but what was most remarkable was how different each game was. You had the traditional Kirby game in "Spring Breeze;" to the quirky "Gourmet Race;" to the dramatic, timed, and rather dark "Revenge of Meta Knight;" to the QTE subgames in "Megaton Punch" and "Samurai Kirby;" and two lengthy epics in "Milky Way Wishes" and "The Great Cave Offensive."
In case you can't tell, I cannot sing the praises of Kirby Super Star enough.

As for the most underrated game...? Probably Kirby's Dream Land 2. KDL1 gets credit for starting it; KDL3 gets credit for its art; KSS gets credit for being life-changingly good; etc. KDL2 was a very great platformer, and it introduced the animal helpers (the three in the game were good ways of changing the game's pacing, rather than being Kirby's Shitty Friends).

Who is your favorite charcater or villain?
Meta Knight

Just look at how badass he used to be. Now he's a soft anti-hero... totally ruined his character. :\ He needs to become an evil villain again.

I'm going to cheat here and add:

Favorite Boss
The incredible Mr. Shine and Mr. Bright
The fact I was fighting the fucking sun and moon blew my mind when I was a lad, and they were hard as balls. Plus, look at their attacks--the way they work in tandem is awesome. That boss battle was Sakurai at his best.

Which is your favorite game in the series?
Kirby Super Star

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet?
I'll echo your choice of Kirby's Dream Land 2.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?
My dream? A tin containing:

- Concept art collected from the very beginning mockups of Kirby, up to today. Compile an entire artbook of it.

- An audio CD containing various (famous) composers' takes on classic (and contemporary) Kirby soundtracks.

and

- A KSS-like collection of titles. Include Kirby's Dream Land 1 through 3, all remastered in beautiful 2d graphics for the first two titles. Include KSS. Include Kirby's Air Ride on a separate disc; on that disc, include Kirby's Canvas Curse.

That is an anniversary edition done right.

What do you love most about Kirby?
The light-hearted nature of the series with the bright colors and friendly look of the setting. Save the creatures trying to kill you.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?
Favorite: Super Star. I don't care much for The Great Cave Adventure, but I did have fun with the rest.
Least favorite: The Amazing Mirror. It tried to be Metroidvania and failed. Mostly because of the shoddy map system.
Underrated: Hard to say because I don't know the consensus on most games. I would have to say Nightmare in Dreamland though. Yes, it was just an easier remake of Kirby's Adventure, but Adventure is a good game, and the graphics got a nice tune-up

Who is your favorite character or villain?
Meta Knight. So mysterious, and carries a sword, my favorite of the Kirby abilities. Also, his ship is named the Halberd, my favorite melee weapon.

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet?
I don't know. I've played all the major ones I know of. I don't know what's good on the Game Boy.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?
Ever single Kirby game up to Kirby's Air Ride. Yes, even Tilt N' Tumble.

Nice thread; 'been thinking of getting Kirby's Dreamland 3 on VC.

And bahahaha! Mr. Iwata's Kirby doodle on the OP is awesome.

What do you love most about Kirby?
The character and the music. Also, since I never had a NES but I had a GB, Kirby IS Nintendo to me, moreso than Mario or Zelda.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?
A toss-up between the original GB game and Canvas Curse. I'm one of the few who probably loves Epic Yarn too.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?
Kirby, obviously!

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)
Maybe more of the GBA ones?

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

Honestly, I figure they're going to put no work into this. I'm glad they acknowledge the franchise exists, since it's like the red-headed stepchild of the Nintendo stable. Even moreso than Metroid!

OK, time to answer my own questions (and I edited the OP quiz taking out the redundant extra "What is your favorite game in the series?" which I accidentally repeated twice);

What do you love most about Kirby?

He's cute, lovable, kind, powerful and is super tough and fights for good without being mean, no easy feat! He has so many abilities, he's like a living Swiss army knife.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

Favorite: Kirby's Adventure (probably the last great, blockbuster NES game), it's like the SMB 3 of the series. Takes everything from before distilled into pure awesome and then brilliantly expanded. Best use of ability copy in my opinion. Lazer and sword are my faves.

Least favorite: Mass Attack. Now before ya jump on me, that's just because it's taking a little getting used to.

Underrated: Kirby's Canvas Curse. Long before IOS and long after IOS, this is one of, if not THE best touch platformer and the first true killer app for the DS. I'm also not exaggerating when I say the levels and backgrounds feature some of the best hand drawn visuals since Yoshi's Island.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

King DeDeDe because he's more of a funny jerk than a villian and he will join Kirby to fight for Dreamland when the chips are down.

I also thought the appearance of Lolo and Lala as bosses in the first Dreamland was pretty deliciously twisted.

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)

Again, Kirby's Dreamland 2. But maybe I should just get a SuperGameboy and a used copy of the game so I can enjoy the added color and cool borders.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

Lots of concept art in a REAL art book, REAL interviews that are in depth and way beyond simple, odd blurbs like "I love Super Mario World! I want to ride a dinosaur!" or "When we were making Mario Sunshine it was like we were having a party!" (actual paraphrased quotes from the All Stars booklet), lots of games, not just plenty of 8 and 16-bit entries but also games such as Kirby 64, Air Ride, Kirby Blockball, ect. Also give us an archive of TV commercials from both the U.S. and Japan and maybe throw in a few episodes of Right Back at Ya. Make this an anniversary release worthy of a deluxe Criterion DVD.

I played the original games on GB and NES, but Super Star is the definitive Kirby game for me. Some of the one-off titles like Canvas Curse or Epic Yarn are pretty good, too. Actually, just about all Kirby games are pretty good. It's just a nice, low-key sort of franchise that's easy to like. Even the games I didn't particularly enjoy, like Amazing Mirror or Mass Attack, are just sort of inoffensive. Kirby makes me feel mellow, man.

Seconded. Also, I love the Butter Building arrangement in Smash Bros Brawl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AThGueayrJg

What do you love most about Kirby?

I enjoy the "kitchen sink" approach evident in all areas of the games, from visuals to music to variety; they're never afraid to try something different or include something that might seem incongruous at first glance, and they almost always pull it off.

Which game in the series is your favorite, your least favorite or which one do you think is underrated?

My favourite would have to be the latest one, Return to Dreamland. It took everything I liked about Super Star and cranked it up a notch. I have no idea why it took them eleven friggin' years to make, but whatever. I also have a lot of respect for Canvas Curse; it's the first game that really sold the unique features of the DS, and it really changed my preconceptions of how a platformer should behave.

My least favourite would be any one of the spinoff games for the original Game Boy; they're boring, lazy reskins, or both.

I think Kirby's Air Ride is definitely underrated; when it came out it was written off by a lot of people as being "dumbed down" because it didn't control like Mario Kart or whatever, which is completely ridiculous.

Who is your favorite charcater or villian?

I have no idea... Heavy Lobster, I guess? Magolor's pretty swag, too. All the eldritch-y bosses are pretty neat.

Which title would you like most to see ported to the Eshop/VC that we haven't gotten yet? (me: Kirby's Dreamland 2)

I'd like to see Kirby Tilt'n'Tumble released for the 3DS VC with gyro control. I'm sure it'd still play like arse, but I'd love for Nintendo to make the effort.

What do you hope to see on the the Anniversary compilation that would make it a huge improvement over the mediocrity of the Mario All Stars disc?

I honestly wonder what the collection will include. I mean, if they add too many Game Boy games they run the risk of cannibalising 3DS VC sales, and if they add too many SNES games then they're not gonna be particularly friendly to people without Classic Controllers. You'd imagine that there probably won't be a whole lot of games on the disk, so will they stick with the traditional platform games and ignore the spinoffs, or will they include a mix of traditional games and spinoffs and risk leaving off "essential" games?

If I wanted to be completely unrealistic, I'd ask for every damn game, complete with filter options, savestates, fastforward/throttle, replay saving/sharing, online and/or split-screen link cable multiplayer where relevant, sound tests for every game, every episode of the Kirby cartoon, and a pink case with a pink Classic Controller.

If I wanted to be realistic, the best case scenario would include the three Dream Land games, Adventure and Super Star, with support for all the various control schemes/controllers... that's about as much as I dare expect. I guess it might come with a soundtrack CD, too.
