The Wii U Speculation Thread VI: The Undiscovered Country

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
I was bored so I made this close-up shot image of the Wii U Sync button...

While the news that Unreal Engine 4 is unlikely for WiiU is disappointing and might be a bit worrying for the prospect of third party games in the future, I'm not too worried. Sure, it won't be as powerful as the 720 and PS4, but I'm pretty sure that once I see Nintendo games like Mario, Zelda, Pikmin, etc in HD, with >360/PS3 graphics... I won't care. I'll just want it.

Re: UE4 scalability, there's this interview with Capps from last year:
http://www.develop-online.net/features/1462/Epic-Games-next-gen-manifesto
I would like to have a vertical solution – for our tech to be useful for mobile projects and triple-A projects. In the past few years I think we’ve learned a lot about our technology and how it works for indie studios. How our tech works for iPhone games, for high-end triple-A studios and for a couple of guys who make a cool UDK game over the summer.

We’re going to apply all these lessons we’ve learned with Unreal Engine 4, and I think you’re going to see a lot of difference with UE3 within the first six months from launch.

And the other thing I’ll call out; I want Unreal Engine 4 to be ready far earlier than UE3 was; not a year after the consoles are released. I think a year from a console’s launch is perfectly fine for releasing a game, but not for releasing new tech. We need to be there day one or very early. That’s my primary focus.
He later mentions the next PS/Xbox so I wouldn't be surprised if they're targeting those for the launch period...so I don't know, maybe a scaled down version that can work on the Wii U and mobile devices a few months after it launches for the high end systems.

The WiiU, UE4 twitter thing is a bit, um, weird, isn't it.

Everyone has been keeping very very quiet about it all. Demo's behind closed doors, no leaks coming out etc.
The someone just blurts it out on twitter.....

its pretty much a confirmation of what most were expecting
only in this thread did we hope Nintendo made some changes that allowed it

now I've said it before... and hope we can do it this time.

Stop talking about UE4 and move on people

I've no views on whether the WiiU needs to be running UE4 or anything, I'm a bit meh on the subject.

But just the way it was "confirmed" is a bit, well, odd and low key.

If this Geoff wanted to reveal, surely as a "games journalist" he could think of more, well, profitable ways to do it rather than a reply to someone on twitter.

Unless he thought it was a private message he was sending to a friend or something?

this is the big guy at Spike TV for video games he has access

Geoff just filmed a large UE4 episode for Spike TV that airs next Friday
he asked the question at GDC last year and this is his answer... could things have changed since GDC last year maybe. But this guy did just film UE4 been around the people working on it so he should have asked again recently if WiiU has any chances

I would say this is pretty much confirmed for now

what we can hope for is that after UE4 is launched for those other consoles Epic goes back and tweaks something that fits WiiU but that is years away unless some other deal is worked on

I don't view this as confirming anything.
Because it doesn't confirm anything.

let it go bro... its okay T_T
we still have UE3.9

This. It's not I'm stressing about this UE4 stuff on Wii U (good to have it and don't know how bad it would be if not), just that this tweet doesn't clear anything. But, well, it's pre E3...

What I'm confused about is that I never saw this in any interviews. The only GDC related WiiU stuff was Capps talking about some UE3 games(Aliens, Batman, etc) that were up and running on the system. So is he misquoting Capps, or is he saying this was something said behind closed doors?

Its a confusing tweet, hopefully he will clear up what he meant in the next 24 hours so we can move on one way or another.

is there some reason not to trust Geoff?
there is only so much you can say on a tweet

I think leaving this open by saying this is not what he meant to say is just setting ourselves up. This is what we all expected just be honest and move on

That's not what I'm saying though. I'm saying that he might just be speculating based on comments from Capps at GDC, as Nirolak mentioned in the OP of that thread. If its a case of something he heard behind closed doors, is he not breaking a NDA?

With regards to trusting Geoff, I have nothing against him. At the same time, this is a person that GAF often shits on for various reasons.

I don't think it's about trust more than it's about the way he answered the question "Mike Capps said at GDC that Wii U will run Unreal Engine 3" and we already knew that.

You can't take it as 100% confirmation until Epic comes out and says that Wii U will not support UE4.

That tweet said absolutely nothing new? He's just repeating an old statement that was clearly done under NDA and was supposed to be PR-talk for UE3.

Nirolak could be looking for more fanboy warriors to ban from all sides with that topic for all we know. I would not be shocked if many bans come from that thread in the next 24 hours

I really doubt Geoff is going to clear anything up if there is an NDA in place
he is probably high enough of an important person for Epic to let the comment slide if there is an NDA about UE4

I don't really think Epic is ready to talk UE4 on consoles... I would not expect it on WiiU before the other guys anyway. Scaling down should be much easier than scaling up I would expect.

well let's hope Epic is not forced to say this for a few years to come

There are many reasons not to trust Geoff "a game you'll NEVER SEE COMING" Keighley. Nothing against the guy, but he's about hype first, accurate information second. I do think Wii U will not (fully) support UE4, but I'll wait for someone that doesn't help run the Spike VGAs to confirm it before I take it as gospel. I just don't fully trust what Geoff says, if I'm being honest.

ok, thx...I read something about the CPU 1 or 2 pages back in that thread it didnt come from IBM or Nintendo?

you are talking about the 4 core 8 threaded thing?
we had thousands of speculation about CPU GPU no one is giving out the real details yet

so again nothing is going on in here

Trying to look on the bright side, didn't Crytek issue quite reassuring statements about WiiU's specs?
For all I know Crytek has been recently in good terms with Nintendo, so maybe it's just UE4 needs to meet some insane specs requirements.

be honest. :)

So the guy will hype anything up, but won't hype WiiU? :3

I still feel UE4 would be nice, but its much easier not to expect it. When the last 20 or so pages has been people who have some of the specs talking able some pretty noticeable gap between WiiU and PS4/Xbox3 then UE4 not scaling down to WiiU is not hard to swallow

Epic can see keeping UE3 alive on WiiU as enough a a cash in not to care about scaling down to fit UE4

This allows other engines to step up on WiiU not as huge a loss as people are making it out to be. Cornered Nintendo is best Nintendo I'm fine with this

I don't expect Wii U to support UE4, but I also don't take this as the last word on the subject.

My personal expectations for the Wii U's power are pretty modest to be honest but I will wait for official confirmation from Epic, personally.

It's not so much about trust, it's about second hand information compressed to Twitter length. We neither know the actual question nor the exact answer.

If cryengine 3-3.9 is supported on wiiu cheaply and easily for developers on the mid tier and aaa side and even on the budget side then ue4 will not be the go to engine for a little while until cryengine and ue3 start to fade. What we dont know yet is japan has their own engines coming up as they seem to be late to the party with their hd engines but right now they are starting to come out of the woodwork.

If UE4 does become the most power hungry engine, developers in the lower tier might pass on it for more scalable engines.

fair enough, but what have you been expecting wsippel?
you are one of the most level headed knowledgeable guys around here

That new engine Capcom has been working for some time?
That Fox engine?
And incidentally hasn't Square-Enix something in the pipeline as well?
