Maybe, maybe not.

I can't possibly see how losing NG3 could be looked down upon by anyone.

It still sucks, as it's basically showing how seriously third parties liken to the system.

Oh my. Stevie's, umm.., bringin' it. Very very interesting.

I can't wait to see what third-party surprises there may be (if any, haha..).

Li Mu Bai on Beyond3d. He's brought us some of our previous hardware info, and was the one that said "stop expecting Zelda or Metroid from Retro".

I expect Metroid from Retro...just not as their first game :p

So from browsing the last few pages of the thread, we have

1) The still non-news of UE3 on Wii U and no word, yes or no, on UE4 on Wii U from Geoff at GDC.
2) Metro Last Night put on hold for Wii U for them to focus on PS360 versions.
3) Ninja Gaiden 3 status up in air after it bombed on PS360.

Anything else or are those the reasons for the increased "doomsday"-ness for Wii U going on currently?

Edit:
And then we have StevieP saying that UE4 will not run on Wii U (nor would it run on Durango pre-GDC), but that it'll probably be ported to the Wii U by interested third-parties, if the feature-set is there. So Wii U won't officially have UE4, but UE4 can be used to develop on Wii U if it has the right feature-set. So net-gain/loss = zero.

That about cover it?
The most important one.. its Nintendo.

I expect Metroid from Retro...just not as their first game :p

I'm expecting Metroid x Star Fox: Fusion Saga

Still wondering what Retro's game could possibly be. So all we know is that's it not based on an existing IP, and it's aimed at capturing the core crowd huh. That either sounds like it's gonna be really good or really generic/disappointing.

Guys, I want to have contest during the press conference. I virtual version of BINGO. Grand prize will be money down towards a Wii U pre-order, plus 5 runner up prizes.

How it would work is that all the participants will be sent PDF files containing three randomly generated BINGO cards. The squares will be filled in with Games, People and Wii U Features that could be revealed during the press event. As they watch, players check off the items on their cards as they are revealed. When you get a whole row filled in one of the cards, you type in "Bingo!" in the thread on GAF. Alternatively, I might set up an email account to do the same for people who are banned or don't plan to have a computer in front of them.

What do you guys think? It seems like a fun way to get hyped for the event, but I would need a little help with organizing and judging the results (for the subjective calls).

Edit: I forgot to link to the website: http://www.checkboxbingo.com

Sounds great. Would love to participate. :)

The sad part about that thread is I still saw a (completely serious) post of "why can't the consoles have 8GB of ram? It's like $30 at NewEgg, and the console manufacturers would get it cheaper".

Which is why it's best to just... stay away. lol.

Nobody who isn't an eternal optimist thinks the Wii U is going to be a beast. But I think (hope) that the dev kit's videocards (R700 series) would at least indicate that you have a Shader Model 4/5x chip capable of the feature sets to run any engine.

Yes, it's possible the CPU may have a lower clock rate than the PPE in the 360 but with newer technology and an out-of-order pipeline, clock rates don't matter as much.

Yes, it's possible that the likely DDR3 memory pool will be slower than the GDDR5 memory pool in Microsoft's console but the pieces of the puzzle should be in place.

Like any modern PC game, you should be able to dial something down enough to make it work. I doubt Epic wants to be those people unless Nintendo pay them to make a game like Microsoft did.

Me, personally? Well it's nice to be able to enjoy Diablo 3 (a relatively low spec game to play, but requiring a lot more hardware grunt to max out with full AA and shadow quality) on everything from my beastly HTPC, my 2 beastly gaming PCs, my horrible Pentium D at work, and mid-spec i5 laptop just the same. That's what pushes gaming forward - not catering to the ultra-high spec that won't come to any kind of fruition or traction in the console space short of busting an already broken system of dick waving from tech companies that results in the complete disappearance of the mid tier market. *breathes*

You don't need hardware power to make a good game. Not even to make a good game look good. You just need a good game.
Everything else is gravy.

I dunno, its been said multiple times by various 3rd parties in interviews that they are under strict NDAs. Considering the amount of stuff that has been dug up through Linkedin profiles, its pretty clear that games are in development for the system.

Potentially not getting Metro is somewhat disappointing, but I doubt any real decision has been made. If the market looks good after the game has launched elsewhere, then maybe it will happen. The game was already certain to be a late port, it may not be worth the time/resources considering THQ already has other games on the way to the platform as well as an exclusive.

With the delay of Metro do Q1 13 it was obviously a great opportunity to get a AAA THQ dark fps on the system at the same time of other platforms. Instead...puff! desappeared!
And about NDA's, let's say that we have to wait just 6 days to find out that...there was no NDA at all, at this point. I mean, we got rumors for Cod, right? We got AC3 announced, so why no Re6 rumor? Why no Capcom leak? Why SE/Eidos officially claimed that there will be no Tomb Raider Wii U version? Why Konami and Kojima officially claimed that there will be no Project Ogre Wii U version? And so on, and on and on...

When I heard there were no current plans for Resident Evil 6, Tomb Raider, or Project Ogre for Wii U, I realized Nintendo wasn't trying hard enough to get third parties on board. Especially hearing Suda 51 had no Wii U dev kits, when they were one of Nintendo's biggest supporters.

Thankfully they were able to get Assassins Creed 3. Although Ubisoft will port their games on any system so that isn't too unexpected.

Exaclty, they were not able or interested in pushing hard for third party support.
The best case could just be get lazy and late ports of some multiplatform titles, and few minor exclusive at launch. Nothing more.

I really cannot understand the gap between Nintendo home VS portable support. Probably it's due to the gap between western and japanese developments...

The only context in which I would call the Wii U a "beast" is in direct head-to-head comparison with the Wii.

If you've been a Nintendo-only gamer this whole time and you're grabbing a Wii U, you'll be quite pleased. The difference, the jump will be quite quite good.

every company should aspire to be like Blizzard when it comes to running requirements. Their games run on a HUGE range of computers from surprisingly low spec'd and upward.

confirmed by people whom I'm forgetting a while ago

edit: it was BG who said so, and I think someone form B3D mentioned it as well. Not 100% but from what they heard.

Don't have time to catch-up, i've spotted 1 or 2 posts always asking why i still didn't posted the thread, i explained it 10 times, even EatChildren confirmed it, we're talking about its creation or not.

I decided i'll make a thread and not only post it here. It will be in 2 hours, maybe less. Again, it's not haptic level, it's not UE4, it's an expected thing that wasn't confirmed until now, well, if you believe me of course :) So be patient (because i'm busy and can't post it now, but i took 10 seconds to warn people that asked it).

Otherwise, anything new today ? Maybe i'll be scooped, again :D

Oh my. Stevie's, umm.., bringin' it. Very very interesting.

I can't wait to see what third-party surprises there may be (if any, haha..).

Sorry but...what about the Metro LL comment? It really seems to be...inappropriate, after the official cancellation of the Wii U version.

I reckon you're a bit over-reacting, honestly; you should not underestimate Nintendo's capacity to build up a decent line-up for WiiU - especially since they have been doing a good job overall with 3DS - and I am pretty convinced next week we'll be overwhelmed with at least a bunch of quality third-parties' games, do I shouldn't worry too much.

As for Metro: last night, given THQ's bad financial shape it is pretty obvious they're cutting off all unnecessary costs, for that matter Devil's third is currently "on hold" and it has never been announced for WiiU.

Yeah, Gianni, probably I'm overreacting, but let's always remember that portable and home markets are really far away one from each other.
I still don't see any western support (only Epic Mmickey, probably) from western developers, for example.
And home market is really market oriented, in terms of third party support; very different from the portable situation.
Let's also remember that in the portable market we have 3DS vs just Vita, an expansive and not-welcome (up to now) device from the market (probably because that kind of approach in the west in more welcome on home console in any case...)
So, yeah: I am really really worried about third party support on the Wii U.
Apart the hope and the hype, for example, do we have at least some positive real fact that can support a positive approach to the third party support for Wii U?

I cannot even think to one single positive real fact, honestly.

Not too much other than Metro: Last Light being unconfirmed for Wii U, and Ninja Gaiden 3's status being up in the air.

Looking forward to the thread!

Wasn't it the case that Ubisoft themselves got 'UE2.5' running on Wii, but nobody else really bothered with it because it wasn't really worth the effort due to it not having been 'officially' done by Epic? Would the case with UE4 on Wii U be any different? If UE3 is the 'natural' fit, I wonder if other third parties would really see the point of bothering going the distance to get UE4 on there.

It's been a real garbage day for Wii U news. The prime focus has been Unreal Engine 4 related: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=475868

Leaving aside the question of other companies and other games, I think anyone looking at the Metro news should be doing so with THQ's current situation in mind. They are on life-support and they are going to be cutting everything they can to try and survive.

The Metro announcement should be taken for what it says about THQ, not as a sign of poor third-party support for Wii U (although that could still materialise, of course).

Yes, it was Ubi's developers that ported UE 2.5 from what I recall.

Not everyone knows everything, mind you. Depends on which part of the world your contacts reside. Metro was canned and/or 'moved to a later date' after that post was made.

You are right, but: THQ cut what they can. Why cutting just the Wii U version? I mean: we are talking about a game that was announced, also for Wii U, one year ago, about a version that should be simply an easy port.
So, why? It's evident that they consider the Wii U less important than the other consoles.
So, what this fact suggests us about third party consideration about the brand new home console from Nintendo?
That they think that it is a Nintendo home, so only Nintenod titles can sell, no market for mature fps games and so on...

Wait, when and why did we loose Ace?
A few days ago. Basically, he was considered by mods to be a troublemaker, having been banned multiple times, and around E3 the mods become very strict with troublemakers, use the time to "clean house" of undesirables before one of their comments sparks a full-fledged system war. This is also what happened to BurntPork.

I would just like to add that my comment wasn't a critic to your post, in any way. I was just saying that the recent cancellation of the game is not a good sign about third party on Wii U, both under a "graphic effort" point of view and under a "general support" point of view.
I think that we have a lot of different facts that are aiming toward a negative approach on this topic, and just hope and hype (and please note that me too, I would like to see my wills satisfied) leading into the positive side.

I'm not sure discussion about Wii U's hardware will disappear once game footage reaches us. If Nintendo doesn't issue a spec sheet with clock frequencies, RAM amount etc., certainly will there be debates on what kind of power is needed to produce what is shown in the software reels. And if Nintendo will supply a spec sheet, people (especially at Beyond3D) will toy around with the numbers in relation to PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and also the suggested specifications of Durango and Orbis.

While I definitely think it will be nice to discuss specific games and services and not just what kind of processor and graphics card the Wii U has, taking away a part of the debate ain't something I find too interesting. Regardless of what happens, E3 is just around the corner.

No, I think it suggests that they feel sinking dev resources into a port to a new platform is too much of a risk for them at the moment. It may be a "simple port", but it's still time, money and personnel tied up.

I think they're mistaken, for what it's worth - the shooter market on the PS3/360 is saturated, and I don't see Metro performing well there, whereas it may have a chance to be a modest success on a new platform - but THQ are circling the drain, so they're going to go with what they see as "sure things" and avoid risk wherever possible.

You mean from Nintendo's end? They are offering free middleware to developers, testing 3rd party engines, and according to Iwata have a number of game partnerships to show at E3. As I mentioned earlier, we also have linkedin profiles from various companies showing them working on the WiiU.

You are right, but: THQ cut what they can. Why cutting just the Wii U version? I mean: we are talking about a game that was announced, also for Wii U, one year ago, about a version that should be simply an easy port.

The game started development for certain target consoles, its not easy to suddenly free up resources for another port. Of course the WiiU is the less important platform, there is no install base to sell to and there is no way of knowing how a late port would sell to begin with. THQ already has other titles in development for the system, canceling any of those over this up-port would be a much bigger blow.

If Wii U has the diversity in its lineup like this Gamecube video, then it will be amazing.

I agree, diversity should be Nintendo's focus if they are serious about getting gamers back to their systems. I love my Mario, Zelda and Pokémon, but relying on just the usual suspects to sell the console, will not cut it. Nintendo needs to recognize their weaknesses and actively try to patch these holes. As much as I love platformers, I really don't see why Nintendo ok'd Galaxy 2, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Epic Yarn and Return to Dreamland, all released within a couple of years, especially considering the few prolific third parties during that era, were mostly platformers as well.

I do however feel Nintendo sees this and is actively trying to fix it. They've made some efforts in the RPG field and funded the development of some horror games. Thing is though, it's all too focused on Japan. With N64, Rare did a great job diversifying Nintendo's output, they had Iguana developing Turok and even Nintendo itself released Wave Race, 1080 and even a couple of basketball games. GameCube had Capcom, Retro's Metroid, Eternal Darkness and some sequels to F-Zero, Star Fox, 1080 and Wave Race. Wii, yeah, I guess Prime 3.

I feel Nintendo lost western mindshare and they need to get it back.

Eh. People who are Sony/Microsoft fanboys will make sure to point it out and Nintendo fanboys will make sure to argue that it doesn't matter or that it doesn't look worse. It's the name of the game with fanboys of all colors.
