Nikkei: Nintendo Planning 3DS XL, WiiU Price Expected at 30k Yen [Nintendo denies]

Bloody hell. Nintendo really are going all-out to dominate the gaming news cycle this E3, aren't they?

  • Pre-E3 presentation to highlight Wii U hardware/OS features
  • E3 conference, mainly focusing on Wii U software
  • Post-conference dev discussion on Wii U hardware
  • 3DS software showcase for the following day

...plus the games on the show floor etc.

Imagine this

3DS on 4 SDK (3 new sdk):

:: 3DS classic
:: 3DS XL
:: 3DS micro
:: 3DS mobile

People can choose what suits them best.

E3 was so dreadful this year that Nintendo had to have two press conferences to bring balance.

Will get 3DSxl day one...
WiiU, I'm not sure if I'm sold. (I'm mostly a portable gamer anyway)

Yep. They're dead.

Wii U won't sell at $399, because that is likely the price of net XBOX and Playstation. I think $299 is a good price -- especially for a competitive advantage.

At most, I can see it being 329.99.

Dual analogs or no buy.

...who the hell am i kidding. Ill probably buy it anyways. Im part of the problem ;_;

Glad I waited. I knew from the beginning there would be a revision. There always is. I'll probably jump in when the 3DS XL hits NA.

if they're making it bigger, it's definitely to increase battery life. and i think they are definitely including a second slide pad if the thing is going to be bigger anyway (although there are more reasons for this than just that).

my guess is that it comes out around august or september, a little after or right around nsmb2 launch.

Fuck my ballsack. "No, no revision, nono, won't happen" - then "Oh, you were an early adopter? Sucks, now it's super-cheap". Then "OLOLOL, we're releasing a new version."

Nintendo have been dicks lately.

It was just a smoke screen just like the DS third pillar talk. The DS XL was god btw! That screen was so awesome to play games on!

You talk like its dead and gone. The XL still IS awesome to play games on. Infinitely better than playing them on a 3DS.

Just realized that the rumored screen size is even bigger than the DSiXL's screens. If true, that device is going to be huge, and definitely would need a form factor that could easily accomodate a dpad location that isn't a piece of shit like the current one and also a 2nd analog slider.

It's an alternative version just like the XL if the rumour is true, not a revision making the current obsolette like the Lite/i revisions.

Games will probably look worse too. Maybe primarily 2D pixel art games on DS didn't look too bad on the XL but with primarily 3D games that already have obvious aliasing issues a screen with considerably less ppi to accomodate the larger size of it at the same resolution will make most much worse. Unless they found a way to actually bump the resolution and system specs to maintain performance in that higher resolution without compatibility issues, but I think that's highly unlikely at this point.

I don't really expect a price cut of the current model to make its value, retail or trade-in, lower and you'll probably have the big stores doing special trade-in deals to both sell the new model and get a load of used regular 3DS to rip others off on.

Good points. Still, I just feel like buying a 3DS at launch is my worst investment ever.

I know Nintendo are going to offer the ability to download 3DS games instead of having to buy a physical version, but will that be for all games? And will it be for games that have been released before it started? Bit Trip Collection and Cave Story 3D, for example.

How big is the DS XL screen?

I hope they also change the look, the 3Ds is ugly.

I was kinda thinking of buying one but now with the revision rumors and hearing that Mario Tennis sucked, I will mos def hold on.

Pretty much as expected. I'm guessing a $300-350 USD price.

If the hook of the tablet doesn't catch with the mainstream I don't see it doing that well at $350.

Says the Nikkei article is an article made up of speculation by Nikkei that has not been fact-checked and is full of mistakes. Dunno if it's Nintendo finally clamping down on rumors (they pinpointed a similar Nikkei publication, though a more baseless one, on a press release a while back) or actually refuting a falsified report.

I mean, if a 3DS LL isn't actually in the pipeline for another 6-8 months then a false report stopping people from buying the system can be potentially devastating.

Nintendo's press release says that the company has not announced or confirmed any facts to Nikkei, and that there are many inaccuracies in their report. They add that many of the details could be speculation from the paper as they have not provided any official information.

Wii U possibly year one for sure, even if 400.

Even more importantly possible 3DSXL would kill me, the DSiXL was my favorite handheld ever! I would be all over a 3DSXL

So, most likely they're not refuting nor confirming the 3DS XL reports + saying the Wii U price estimation is pure fiction?

Nintendo even acknowledging this so close to their conference is practically confirmation enough for me. Excellent news, the DSi XL is one of the best handhelds ever as far as style and comfort are concerned, so this news is more than welcome.

If they're denying it in some sense, have they done this before with recent reveals?
As I recall, Nikkei spilled the news of the DS Lite. Nintendo denied it, hemmed, hawed and finally admitted it was coming out a short time later.

That's a non-denial denial. They didn't really deny anything.

Sony had so much pressure for years to add a second stick to the psp and they didnt. I dont think Nintendo will either.

But an XL will be a beautiful thing to upgrade to in a year or two. i cant believe people thought there would be a lite for so long. The dam thing is small enough already!
