[N-Conf] Pikmin 3

What... somehow I completely missed the fact that the gamepad has a IR camera on it for pointing functionality. That's awesome news, why doesn't Nintendo ever mention this feature?

Stuff said below. They use this sort of functionality a few games shown like Nintendo Land.

Looks awesome been dying for this game.
So happy they did not dumb it down and make some casual gimmicky trash.

It doesn't. I'm guessing that what was ACTUALLY happening is that the GamePad with its gyro and accelerometer can emulate a MotionPlus remote, which is what I think actually controls the cursor in both control schemes.

[edit] Just to be clear, there is an IR spot on the controller top, but it's a transmitter, like a TV remote control. It's not a camera.

seems like a good normal map would do wonders on that ground texture.

...can the WiiU support normal maps?
It can't, it can basically only do Wii graphics, that's why it doesn't get Unreal Engine 3 ports like Batman, Darksiders, Mass Effect...

I'm glad you can point with the Upad though it's not going to be as comfortable as the Wiimote but I hope it also at least works better than it does in Skyward Sword (which also inexplicably doesn't use IR for the pointer, but Motion Plus instead).

Edit: well, not for this, I'll still have my Wiimotes if I even get a WiiU, but I mean for other games that'd be great with a pointer and potentially can't support a Wiimote scheme because they need more buttons or whatever the Upad has.

I know that and I don't care. At least Xenoblade had grass blades...and that's an open-world (so I hear? haven't played), 3rd party game that doesn't even focus on being close to the ground/small objects.

Whatever Nintendo's doing here looks bad. The textures are flat and noticeably bad.

Isn't Xenoblade a Nintendo game, not third party?

Monolith Soft belong to Nintendo.

Never played a pikmin and I'm not really interested in time limit gameplay.... :|
They dropped that (well, the BIG time limit) in the 2nd game. You still had certain amounts of time each day, but no count-down like in Pikmin 1.

Pikmin would really sorta fall apart without ANY time limit. Without that as a driving force you could just mine shit forever, or get everything in no time at all. It's really the planning of "what will I do today," and the respawning of certain elements across days, that makes the format function.

For the sandbox areas, at least. You don't need the time limit if you're performing sequential linear tasks, like the caves or the challenges in Pikmin 2. Which is why they aren't there!

I played Pikmin and liked it but didn't end up finishing it. This looks pretty great, can't wait to play it. I am pretty impressed graphics-wise too, seems like that's just me though.

Looks great, I hope its more than just a cult classic this time around. Online should be awesomely awesome if it works properly.(is there online hopefully??)

I was hoping for some major UI/control re-haul with this one. Something to really show of the Wii-U gamepad. Didn't get it.

The ground textures don't look all that good but the physics of the foliage and water certainly do.

So glad they haven't abandoned the Wii Remote either, gives me hope for ZerUda.

I just want to say that no matter how bad the Nintendo conference was (and it was), this game is still going to be awesome. Pikmin 1+2 are the unsung heroes of the Gamecube. Best games on the lunchbox. For those who haven't played Pikmin before, you are in for a treat.

With these little pikmin i can understand that they chose for mostly flat grass textures.
It's not like tall grass is that hard to make these days... It was a choice they made, and one i can understand.

The flat and clear play field was most definitely a design decision, not anything based on technical limitations. The WiiU could be the most powerful thing on the planet and there still wouldn't be individual blades of grass everywhere. The space is clear for clarity and ease of play.

That being said, the textures certainly could look sharper. I'm not disappointed with how it looks, but I can't say there isn't any room for improvement.

There is a good bit of extra foliage in the high areas when compared to the old ones. But in the floor demos I've seen this block the view of the action. Also, they don't go transparent when your leader passes underneath like they did in the old games.I wonder why that is not happening?

Yeah i'm not going to cry over it. It's good that they're prioritising clarity and playability over looks.

The game looks good but I feel like they could have done a lot more. Then again I've only seen one demo level so maybe the final game will have more spectacular environments, lighting, weather effects and so forth.

So far the gameplay doesn't seem to stray very far from Pikmin 1 and 2. I was hoping 3 would be more than just more of the same with 2 new pikmin types. I hope Nintendo has more surprises to show with this game.

For someone who entirely skipped the Wii to the point of not even having touched one since having tried Wii Sports during the launch window, I will be buying a Wii U at one point in time just to get my hands on this game. Pikmin 1 and 2 were unbelievably good.

Flying Pikmin.

Sorry it just doesn't do it for me.

I'd love Nintendo to add a vertical dimension to the game. Imagine scaling a huge tree to fight some boss at the top. A cool camera angle could even show your pikmin falling from the top of the tree to their death.

I just want all that development time to result in a refreshing pikmin game.

People forgot game graphics can be cleaned up between E3 and the final release...for lots of games demos and trailers are taken from early sections created weeks before the show. I'm not saying expect drastic improvements but I'm sure it'll look even nicer

Who knows what they have held back? You may be surprised yet!

Indeed. There could be another 4-8 months work on this, and most Wii U titles shown off. Luigi's Mansion is proof that change is possible (admittedly, much longer times involved, but still).

Yep, Nintendo typically polishes graphics at the end of the development cycle. Skyward Sword is a perfect example of that.

is it safe to assume this was meant to be a wii game, but they upped it to HD resolution and witheld it for wiiu? sure looks like it

Yeah Miyamoto already talked about Pikmin 3 debut on Wii years ago.
But it's not so much on the graphics side, but I'm surprised and kinda dissapointed to see so much Wii legacy in this title (wiimote controls).
Full touch controls like we discussed in an old Pikmin 3 thread would have been a better showing of the Wii u Gamepad possibilities.

*scratches head* I dunno, I'm having a hard time finding the ugly in this. I'm not BLOWN AWAY but I fail to see what's so ugly about this. *shrug*

watched the footage again, after i was very positive yesterday.

After watching it, i now think.... it still looks phenomenal. Very clean and very pikmin and i'm sure there will be many nice levels with crazy details. I'm hyped as a mofo.

I watched it 3 times just now and it's such an improvement over pikmin 2.
And not just the resolution and the glorious reduction of jaggies (i hope the final game will have even cleaner edges).

Can no wait to play the final game. Hopefully at launch or very close to launch.

It's definitely not ugly. Not mind blowing either. But it does have it's charm.
