Rumour: Nintendo cancels Eternal Darkness 2; Fact: Silicon Knights hit by layoffs

This is Nintendo politics I don't understand, or at least I don't agree with.
If they want third party love, they better show more interest in their second party first.
If they want more core gamers games and generally more games for their systems, they also need to invest in more western studios.
They should have secured Silicon Knights IPs and supported them years ago.

SK stopped wanting to work with Nintendo, not the other way around

Nintendo made the right call, given the mess SK is in today.

You know I really don't feel sorry for them. I loved ED back in the days but Dyack's attitude and their constant slide to making nothing but shitty games just has caused me not to give a shit anymore. Combine that with their childish lawsuit against Epic so that they could have a scapegoat for why Too Human sucked and any goodwill they ever had was eaten up.

I really can't blame Nintendo for deciding to not deal with them.

Exactly. And to be honest I think Nintendo probably had a lot more then we thought to do with why ED was so good. That's the only way you can explain why SK went nothing but down the crapper after no longer working with Nintendo.

I cannot say whether all remaining 40 employees were laid off, but they were rather extensive. One source (among others) for the layoffs is (now former) SK director Julian Spillane:

wasn't there also his tweet some week ago that he was seeking job?

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
For sure Nintendo made the right decision here. SK are a trainwreck. Luckily they own the ED trademark so they can still do something with the franchise.

That was one social experiment too many Dyack. I wish luck to the employees that have been laid off...

To be honest, SK is not the best studio to work on ED2, not anymore.

Just give the IP to Retro or any other team, they'd do a better job. I want ED2, but I also want it to be good.

So another generation will pass without an Eternal Darkness sequel...

Dyack should have cut his losses on Too Human long ago and moved on.

They did make their own engine. By illegally, as proven in a court of law, appropriating assets from UE3.

Are they still allowed to use that engine after the lawsuit? Part of the reason for the cancellation might have been that ED2 is essentially "engine-less" at this point, so that apart of paying the damages to Epic they would also need to port ED2 to a new engine... Sounds like much more trouble than it's worth.

True. I was more wondering why Nintendo repartnered with them for ED2 recently. Dyack must make persuasive arguments.

Right place, right time, I guess. Judging by the statements Iwata made during the last investor meetings Nintendo really wants more western collaborations and since ED2 is a fan-favourite and probably not all that expensive to develop...

The problem with Dyak is that despite being a huge jerk, he has the ability to create fantastic universes. I'm not sure if ED2 without him would really be the same.

It's too bad. Even Eternal Darkness 2 being hinted at / announced would have given most hardcore gamers more of a reason to show up to the Wii U launch than all of Nintendo's software did. Ubisoft is the only one that got it right.

Walruses, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers and badgers.
This basically crosses out the good news of Tokyo Jungle being localized, and returns this E3 to shitty. :/

Shiggy, is this 100% or 50/50? Because I still need hope...

In hindsight SK's decision to chase the HD dream rather than develop for Wii has cost them dearly.

This is such sad sad news. I loved Eternal Darkness. A game I've played many many times. A sequel on Wii U would be perfect for showcasing insanity effects using the GamePad etc.

This is shit news!

It really sucks for all the people at SK that have lost their job because of Dyack's hubris. All the best to them.

Yes, but the layoffs happened yesterday. It looks like they anticipated the cancellation.

Well with E3 coming up I can see the weeks of preparation being a dead giveaway for them if ED2 was suddenly not a part of the conference anymore.

Honestly, while it sucks that people are losing their jobs 'n all, it really fucking surprises me that SK has been in business this long after so many mediocre titles that have also failed to do well commercially. You're all hype, Dyack. Why didn't they just consolidate and refocus on something sustainable for a smaller crew, like mobile or PCs after TH or X-Men?

If this is true, that's a fucking shame. Would have loved to see it on the Wii-U.

Going on trial against Epic was plain stupid.

No it wasn't, from what I heard at the time they filed the suit is many in the dev community sided with SK.

They just presented their case very poorly, and I'd blame the attorneys for that.

I didn't have realistic expectations that they'd make a good game anyway given how bad their other games have been. Making ED2 wasn't going to magically make them better developers.

obviously nintendo wants Eternal darkness back into their catalog. Who is gonna develop it now?

n-space? capcom? team ninja?

everyone might point towards retro, but they are the best second party western team they have. I don't see them taking the game. :/

hope retro do it.

A new developer, built and owned by Ninty, starring former members of SK and other industry talent. IF ED2 was far along enough and still desirable. Doubt it would happen, though.

Retro is first party.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
Who the eff did they hire as attorneys? Not being able to state your damages is kind of lawyering 101.

A new team at NST maybe? Or what MightyHedgehog said. Maybe Nintendo of Canada can finally have their own studio.

Hopefully Spillane has been in touch with the fine folks at UbiTO. He's a good dude.

I totally missed the tweets about everyone getting laid off. Good spot, Shiggy.

Wonder if Retro could get some of the staff and develop it themselves whenever there's a good opportunity? Then again going from Canada to Texas is kind of insane of a jump.

This whole thing sucks. Too Human, despite it's flaws, is one of my favorite games this generation. I knew we'd probably never see a sequel, but now it's pretty definitive. Such a shame for those of us that loved the game.
