NPD May 2012 Sales Results [Up4: Max Payne 3, Dragon's Dogma, Ghost Recon]

Especially when you consider the price differential between the 3DS in May 2011 and May 2012. Barely moving 100K units after a massive price cut is bad. And I'm statrting to wonder if NSMB2 i a savior some think it will be. Tablets and smartphones have devastated the handheld market for Sony and Nintendo.

I don't believe this to be true at all. There's been no major software since Kid Icarus to drive the hardware. It's been selling in May with no big titles to embrace that launched in May. It's essentially a dry period.

Yikes, those hardware sales are horrible. 3DS is still bad even though it went up a bit. I don't even want to see Vita or Wii's sales...

Well economy is finally affecting videogame´s industry. Also a lot of people think next generation is near and refuse to get a 360 or PS3.

Depends

360 has Halo 4 this holiday and Fable Journey, plus Gears soon after

They probably expect to make up then, it could be one of their best holiday sales yet
With $99 service contract systems available and that lineup (along with BLOPS2 & AC3), it probably will be.
It'll be close to record-setting if not actually outright setting the mark.
IN CHRISTMAS #8!

People that want to own an Xbox own one. That's it. Sales of course are going to drop to nothing once you've saturated your market with your game system. It's already sold to pretty much everyone that's going to buy it. Same with the other current gen systems.

What were people expecting? It's not like a whole new audience of people are still on the fence about buying a game system.

Honestly, they should probably give the next one 1/10th-1/5th the budget and make it for handhelds.

I mean, it got outsold by Rebellion's stealth release and Battlefield 3's eighth month.

I agree...and maybe they could use it as a benefit. As much as I like DD, sometimes I do felt it could have worked better with a more directed, streamlined approach to a certain degree. Very few games can pull off something Skyrim did and sell well. Maybe something less "big" will mean less money, and DD2 might sound plausible to Capcom.

Rebellion's stealth game outselling it mystifies me. Stop the pain, Nirolak. I can't handle the truth. :(

record ipad/iphone sales would show that consumers will still buy things they want. This generation has just gone on too long and the market is basically saturated. What would make someone buy a 360/PS3/Wii at this point if they have not bought one in the last six years?

Well their NPD PR sucks, always. Doesn't matter even if they did decent. I'm waiting for Nintendo to actually get some numbers.
It's like they stick their head in the sand regardless of the numbers lol

Edit: what was last gem in terms of total hardware? <200M?

We've already surpassed that at higher pice points. Saturation is here obviously.

Craziest thing about this is that this is the first month that includes Walmart data. I wonder how ugly the numbers would look without that.

Hey, at least the Vita outsells the PSP here! Amirite?

EDIt @ Darkside, they would estimate the #'s in previous months so you wouldn't see a difference.

except for the fact that theres still another year and a half to go before next gen arrives. These numbers are what would be expected months before new consoles launch.

I'm happy about this news, and hopefully they get even worse next month. They need to wake the fuck up.

Seeing the 3DS numbers, I really think it was a fool's folly to give 3DS so little in the upcoming holiday. I don't think NSMB2 wkll be enough. There needs to something with mass appeal.

Put it this way. The 3DS sold nearly the same amount as this month in US in one week in Japan a couple of weeks ago. Japan has a population that is a third the size of America.

Could it be that home consoles are dying in Japan and handhelds are dying in NA?

Walmart data was being estimated before. This just makes the numbers more accurate now.
Sniper Elite V2 probably got a bump due to Walmart but I doubt it made much of an impact elsewhere.

Could be. Although VITA isn't exactly flourishing anywhere and Nintendo will still do OK in North America portable space due in large part to Mario and Pokemon. I still think they're in better shape there domestically than in the console space. And that's bad news given an already contracted portable market due to mobile.

Walmart sales were (pseudo-)included before, just as an estimate. It's not like a raw increase to all the sales numbers.

Even in a good economy I doubt Nintendo handheld games at 40 bucks would do well in the face of iPad/iPhone titles. Nintendo doesn't get it. They just released DK Jr for 5 dollars on the Eshop. No enhancements. 5 bucks. For 5 bucks I can get 5 really good iPhone games. If consoles/handhelds eventually do die(they wont), it won't be because people all of a sudden said they were tired of gaming.

This generation went on for too long.

April 2011
DS - 257k
PSP - 89k
360 - 297k
PS3 - 204.3k
Wii - 172k
3DS - 194k

May 2011
DS - 198k
360 - 270k
PS3 - 177K
Wii - 236k
3DS - 97k

Thank you. Roll on next gen. Where do Sony and MS go from here? Padding out the next 16 months is going to be hell without substantial price drops or customer incentive.

And lets face it; aside from the SAME OLD SAME OLD CoD, the last BIG title to come out for this generation will be Halo 4. I don't see the new Gears, GoW or The Last of Us making a big impact.

Assassin's Creed 3 and Bioshock Infinite will both do well.

so tempted to avatar quote...

The lead in till next gen is going to be HORRIBLE. At least Nintendo have their next gen system out by the end of the year, what are Sony/MS going to do for the next year?

Touch/iPhone/iPads are technically handhelds. The handheld market is not dying in the West. It's growing actually.

Pretty sure the NPD just estimated Walmart sales before this month so I don't think it would have made a huge difference. Don't quote me on that though.

EDIT: Beaten.....

Price drop is all that's left, for sure. Maybe some new slimmed down SKU's to garner a bit more interest as well.

Bish loves my games!
Wow @ console retail. Wow. :-( Durango and PS4 are gonna arrive a year too late, and Wii-U just isn't gonna scratch the next gen itch. Time for a new gaming PC!

PS3 exclusive titles, including Beyond: Two Souls, God of War: Ascension and The Last of Us, as well as PS Vita titles PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale and Assassin's Creed III: Liberation which will continue PlayStation's momentum into the new year.
Momentum?

Assassin's Creed 3 and Bioshock Infinite will both do well.

Well enough to bring in a reasonable amount of new hardware adopters? Halo 4 has the best chance of any game to create SOME hardware demand, and that just boils down to Microsoft's amazing marketing and PR machine.

Edit: Oh yeah, GTAV... keep it for next-gen launch, we'll get a better game out of it.

they still have the $149.99 and $99.99 price points to boost sales temporarily. They're just gonna have to do it sooner than they'd hoped.

Nothing speaks volumes about Nintendo of America's lack of awareness on a lot of things right now than an emulated NES version of Donkey Kong Jr. being priced at $4.99 in 2012.
Even the most diehard Nintendo apologists can't consider that to be a fundamentally sound pricing strategy.

Momentum?
Downward momentum still counts as momentum.

Pretty bad hardware sales too, the 3DS numbers are really bad. I'm pretty sure those are way worse numbers than what the PSP was doing at a similar point in its lifetime.

I see more potential hardware demand with AC 3 and Bioshock Infinite than with Halo 4.

What halo fan skipped 3, ODST, and Reach but would suddenly want to get Halo 4?
