Nintendo family has sold 285k units of hardware!

In May, Nintendo sold more than 285,000 units of portable and console hardware. At the E3 Expo in Los Angeles last week, Nintendo revealed a massive slate of first- and third-party games on the way for Nintendo 3DS and the upcoming Wii U console. Further details about Nintendo's E3 announcements can be found here: http://e3.nintendo.com. We're looking forward to a strong second half of 2012.

Wow, next generation is coming soon but I don't think anything is going to change.

We're still going to be seeing the same rehashed crap over and over again.

Maybe the analysts are right--this industry is dying :(

I do predict that one of the big three drops out of console manufacturing after next go-round.

The bad news is what is supposed to save the Vita in the summer months? Gravity Rush? lol.

It could go under 50k next month.

If we take the respective "third" month the difference isn't that big.

Sure this past may was horrid for Vita in Japan with a record low 27K.

This is without taking into consideration the vast population difference between the US and Japan.

Thats just abysmal. I don't see how a CoD or AC will suddenly make people buy this system. It's still relatively new and its still getting trounced by the 3DS 2:1 here (and 5-10:1 in Japan). Ouch!

One of them needs to come out in... like.. August and be really, really, actually good or Vita is going to get slaughtered this holiday. Not like 'better than previous handheld iterations' in the series, actually must-own awesome enough to get people talking.

I got grudge sucked!
These console are just tired and old. People want new consoles, and now.

The same thing happened last generation. The typical month sales last gen were around 100-200k.

It wasn't until this generation did consoles consistently sell 300k+ a month

I'm not convinced. I mean you could easily be right and we have history to back that up. For me though, the economy is still bad, especially the jobs numbers, new consoles will probably be north of $300, development cost will skyrocket forcing more studios to close, the competition from other devices will be more intense than people realize. I also think you have people like me who've gamed a long ass time, but this is it for me, I'm not moving up. I'm wondering if that 80's generation of gamers will leave due to other responsibilities and they won't be replaced as fast as they leave. Between work and kids consuming even more time, I think I can be happy playing what I have until I get tired of it. I have a shitload of old games I really want to replay. I really don't want a new console.

"Massive slate?" REALLY? Because I didn't see that at E3.

Dragon's Dogma didn't keep its lofty 5million unit sales goal, did it?

Console numbers tell us we're still in an economic downturn than anything else. Every other living expense has shot through the roof (between the price creep-up and the shrink rays I'd say food bills are 20-30% higher over last year with most items), which in turn hits the poor man's hobby pretty hard.

Projected sales for the game is 1.5 million. It's been doing well in some other regions (UK and Japan for instance) so hopefully it's going well overall.

If it's true that Mario Tennis just opened for less then 50K I think its a very good chance that Gravity Rush will do the same.

My bet's on Sony sadly. I wouldn't be surprised if microsoft decides focusing on the living room is no longer their goal and moves its goals to doubling down on Windows 9 to make it the premier tablet OS. Thus, they drop out as well.

How much do you guys think the economy plays into this? The total income of the middle class is stagnant/dropping and almost every other cost is rising right now.

The economy was much worse in 2008-2010 and sales were record breaking month after month.

For the bang they offer videogames are a cheap entertainment option.

come on 3DS owners....

fucking pathetic

Almost bought it yesterday, but decided against it. It's legs will surely carry it to decent numbers though. Honestly Nintendo is approaching Mario overload levels with five games this year, seven in a year span come November (nine if you include Luigi's Mansion and NintendoLand).

Vita is just awful. Gravity Rush.... I fear next months numbers.

Not really.

If the brand is big enough the games will still continue to do well. Final Fantasy XII, Persona 4, God of War 2 and a few more where all games that shipped either around or after 360 and PS3.
I didn't mean for the impact it would have on software sales. I meant the impact it would have on how the launch lineups are perceived on new systems. It wouldn't surprse me if software sales are better next year simply because it won't be hard to outdo this year for releases.

The big console game to come since Mass Effect 3 has been... ? Prototype 2? Max Payne 3? Kind of pathetic. And what comes out before September? Dishonored should have been slotted for late August like BioShock and DX Human Revolution. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems like there is going to be a six month gap between notable releases, and that is giving Far Cry 3 a lot more credit than it even deserves. Yeah I know Madden is August, but that is already accounted for when you're talking about expected software sales.

Such a dry stretch. The free games on PSN+ are more interesting than the retail schedule over the summer, even if a lot of them are from last year.

Unreal about Vita. At one point I thought that thing would be a homerun. As much as we need new hardware I think the publishers are going to have to offer new ideas. Same stuff with prettier gfx (like that Boba Fett game) isn't going to sell

Quite a bit. More than anyone is willing to say because people are pretty picky with the games they buy and aren't willing to dish out $60 easily like they used to. A $60 game is now a luxury for a lot of people. I used to buy as much as 6 games a year and now I only wanna buy 2-3.

and yet iDevices and smartphones continue to sell like crazy. It's been a long generation and people's thirst for newness starts to build up. People don't get too excited about a piece of equipment that's been out 6+ years now.

I'm hard pressed to think of another consumer electronic that has been updated in 7 years and is expected to keep selling tons.

Already did pixel counting a while ago for the first three months of the year. Europe based on Nintendo charts, in millions:

2012:
PS3 - 0.97
360 - 0.70
Wii - 0.57

2011:
PS3 - 1.03
360 - 0.70
WII - 0.70

The PS3 and 360 were holding pretty well Y/Y. Even the Wii was only down about 20%.

Wastes hours checking old Famitsu software data, but that's why we love him.
I don't mean to pile on, but best case scenario Vita sold what, 130-140K this month worldwide?

Someone tell me how the fuck Sony is going to get even close with their fiscal year 10M projection?

I'm not too shocked at that poor hardware showing for consoles, given the big release of Diablo III. What's the next big console game that's coming out? Madden? Could be hard on hardware til then...

I fear for all systems this summer except DS/3DS even still not sure how well Pokemon Conquest will do, but Kingdom Hearts should do decently.

And maybe Heroes of Ruin will surprise.

Doesn't help that Mario Tennis is $40. I'm willing to dish out $40 for Super Mario 3D Land, but these $40 price tags have turned me off a lot of games. In another year when we start to get more reasonable prices on old and used titles, I will pick up some of the titles I skipped. I'm sure I am not the only one.
