Nailed it.

16:9 is perfect for movies, games, and Metro.
9:16 is perfect for reading PDFs and such.
Never had a problem with 16:9.

Not even Look at these ratios.

9/16 = 0.5625
8.5/11 =0.772727273

I read a shit ton of pdfs. 9:16 is terrible for pdfs.

Its not close to native for the item you are reading. You can't scale things well.

This thread confuses me.

It's like.. people I know knew of Windows 8's Metro UI + full desktop features, and I know knew about 3rd party tablets already announced.. are pretending they just didn't know these facts.

Other than the kickstand + keyboard...

... this is like.. "Hi Guys, here's what we've been saying about Windows 8 for almost 2 years now."

Ding, ding, ding!

Interesting POV as mine is the exact opposite. the RT model is the only one that has a chance to sell to someone considering a tablet and isn’t already 100% sold on the ipad this fall.

the Pro version is for a subset of people that need/want pen support and need to run legacy windows apps. it’s an impressive piece of tech but it’ll be much more expensive and won’t sell nearly as much.

I am actually flipping back around to your POV a bit, I think. When you get right down to it, the Pro version is basically a rival for the Macbook Air, and I don't know that this thing really beats the Air in any way other than, you know, coming with Windows out of the box.

The RT version does fit a kind of nifty little space for itself, though. It's not exactly a proper iPad competitor but it's not really an ultrabook either.

Interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out. More real competition in this sector is a good thing, and this device definitely brings some really cool ideas to the table. It also has a number of really obvious flaws and potential negatives, and at the end of the day it's still Windows 8, which has less than enthusiastic buzz going for it.

Impressed MS delivered the goods today, though. Definitely exceeded expectations for sure. Really interested to hear some hands on reports.

This seems like the kind of thing that, if it really does deliver on its promises, I might be interested in getting after its first revision.

Weirdest announcement thread on gaf I've seen to date.

Agreed.

When I saw that this was just.. pretty much what was expected.. MS branded tablet hardware w/ Windows 8's known features.

I came into this thread expecting to see a blood-bath of "that's it?"

Color me.. confused.

Product looks cool though.

Only the Pro version is. Windows RT is not full Windows. You will not be able to install Steam on it and play TF2.

Nobody would want to play TF2 or anything like that on these devices anyway.

For fun distractions / apps, super mobile office work, student lectures and easy-carry lifestyle browsing, these things look shit-hot!

Wow. MS pulled an amazing hat-trick. This is basically a Win 8 touchscreen Ultrabook. I'm not saying that's a bad thing, but they've convinced people to pay a premium for something that's already out.

Keyboard was cool, sure. I dig that Adobe was part of the presentation which means they're definitely unified in their hatred for Apple. However, what I want to know is:

1. What is the environment like? Is it a closed system like apple? I dig how i don't even have to THINK about viruses and the like with iPad. Surface? Who knows?

2. What's MS's answer to the apple store?

3. What's the integration with Xbox Live?

4. Can we see examples of how the touch screen works with drawing? That's an area that apple severely lacks in. IF this is a an alternative to those expensive monitors that artists use, then this becomes very interesting.

5. How will the device manage media? If i use the VERY AWESOME USB 2.0 input for an external drive, is it as simple as drag-n-drop? Could be cool, I guess, but this goes back to my first concern about the eco-system...

Anyway...watching with an open mind. At least this doesn't feel like an IPAD knockoff....
read any Windows 8 thread?

most of these questions are answered.

I think there's a lot of people hard up to see any kind of real competition to Apple. Android tablets have all shit the bed, so MS is their only hope.

Disappointed there was nothing about integration of Smartglass and Xbox
smartglass and xbox games are just apps. the xbox games app is in the beta, and there was a early version of smartglass in one of the betas as well. Every version of Windows 8/RT will have access to those.

Yeah, it's pretty boring; I think most people here just don't follow tech news.

We have no clue when Windows 8 comes out right?

Probably by end of October. I've used release preview, which is 3 weeks old, and it runs nearly as good as a complete OS.

Considering the state of the OS, and how MS is throwing all of their resources into consumer products and that thing called the holidays, it has to be released by November or they're going to fuck up.

They should've waited until this thing was ready to buy. Why announce today?

Maybe to prevent people from buying updated MacBook Airs? I don't know. They certainly have me thinking twice.

As amazing as this is, why not just buy an ultrabook? I don't understand the benefits of a tablet over a netbook.

Sometimes you might not want to use it as an ultrabook?

As someone who bought an HP tablet PC years ago for recreational digital art via touchscreen this is what I wanted the iPad to be all those years ago.

pretty much my thoughts exactly. they showed some hardware that was nicer than I expected. And the iPad will need real competition soon to keep Apple on their toes.

Did they talk about browsing? If this device gives me back the real internet on portable devices I would be very happy. (Chrome & Flash should be a lock for the pro version, right?)

Great, now I can have ultra portable viruses! Think I'll wait for an affordable non-Windows tablet instead.
Windows 8/RT has Malware protection built in (among other things). And if you don't want malware, buy the ARM tablet, or use common sense.
