Rogers raises max cap penalty to $100/month to protect you from high charges

"To protect you from unexpected high charges, we currently cap the maximum monthly amount you can be charged for additional internet usage at $50 in addition to your Hi-Speed Internet plan's monthly service fee, modem rental fee (if applicable) and taxes. Effective August 16, 2012 this monthly limit will be increased to $100 in addition to your plan's monthly service fee, modem rental fee (if applicable) and taxes. If you exceed the monthly usage allowance included in your Hi-Speed Internet plan you will begin to see charges up to the new limit beginning on your first invoice on or after September 16, 2012.

Crazy example: If you're in Ontario, on their "lite" plan (3Mbps, 15GB cap), and download 40GB in one month, your bill will be $153.68.
 
They should just automatically bump you up to the next tier. Also you didn't give the most extreme example. Doesn't the ultra light have a $5/gb overage fee?
 
The amazing expense of data plans is what's keeping me from getting a smartphone right now

If they really wanted to protect you from fees they would cut your internet use after you hit the cap and let you either wait for the reset or call them to buy an extra bandwidth package.

As it is, they don't even give you the 50% and 75% bandwidth usage warnings on time. If I didn't monitor my household's bandwidth, we would go over on occasion. December is a bad month. Steam sales plus my wife being off work to stream more shows equals a lot of bandwidth used.
 
It is also pretty sad that you can blow your entire cap in 24-48 hours on most plans if you download constantly.
 
I see that Tech Savvy finally has some packages that are not offering 2001 speeds (I am never going back to 3-5mbps dowloads). How reliable are they? If you get a 18 or 24 mbps package, how close is your download speed to the advertised total?
 
It's the price we have to pay to protect our Canadian identities, guys.

They just resell Bell/Rogers lines. So if those services are good in your area then you shouldnt have any problems with Teksavvy.

~36 after taxes (ish) for 300GB cap + pretty damn fast.

There are some compatible modems, which I believe they tell you on their site. I opted for their regular modem (cable) and it's been going amazing so far. Then again, I don't know the benefits of having a better modem, but I can't complain :P All is well.

EDIT: I don't know much about their DSL service, sorry.

Thanks. They don't offer cable service in my area, only DSL, and I've heard people say DSL can go down sometimes. I'm sure it won't be an issue though.

Cogeco actually got rid of their maximum cap amount, so they can charge you infinitely at $1/GB for each gig over. But at least when they did it, they upped our DL and UL speeds and increased our monthly cap by 50GB for free. Rogers just jacks the cap up for nothing.
 
Yeah i use Cogeco and am very pleased. Partially because to my knowledge they don't outsource any of their jobs to India. I hate spending money on companies like Rogers/Bell that deliver the worst in customer service/satisfaction.

I had Bell (for a short while, thanks MOM!) and the changed to TekSavvy, but had to get rid of Teksavvy cuz I was so far from their source and was getting massive signal/speed dropoff for DSL (Im past Brampton and apparently thats too far).
 
West end of Toronto. Teksavvy has been pretty good to us, although trouble shooting a shot modem took way longer than it should have with their customer service.

There isn't any real numbers on data delivery costs and I'm sure they will keep it that way for a while to come.

I've been using Shaw Cable for years now, and I am really getting tired of their antics as well. I feel like it is time to switch to a new ISP. I wonder if Teksavvy is available in western Canada?
 
Game companies, movie streaming services, and any other digital distribution services should be up in arms and pushing on these ISP companies. This kind of crap is what's going to slow adoption of cloud services, streaming services, and digital download services.
 
There are a lot of options now for Canadians to get the fuck away from the incumbants.

Our system here is corrupt and pretty much protected by the goverment, it will not change anytime soon.

I have been using independant ISP's for about 2 years now and never looked back, half the price for 5 times the bandwidth

I'm not sure I even had to pay for installation since Rogers cable Internet was my last Internet service.

Modem may seem steep at first (although you may find better supported modems or the standard modem at a cheaper price), it's worth it if you do a lot of downloading. I went over my cap with Rogers quite a few too many times and that really bit me in the ass. I no longer have to worry about going over the cap and paying those outrageous fees. Plus, you're saving money on the base cost of the service anyways :)

It'll pay off really quickly.
