Regarding my SpaceChem issue I mentioned earlier, the dev contacted me (I wrote him a mail) within a few hours and offered me to fix it asap :-o Amazing.

On another note:
I finally need to buy my GAF Gold account.

It's because no one ever has come so far in it as you have :p

Well, I am only half through it , and I know that quite a few of the guys I recommended this game to played further than I did so far. I know you made a joke, but it got me to look up something: Only 2,6% of all SpaceChem players played through the campaign. Haha.

And wow, looked up the same for Frozen Synapse, which has even WORSE stats. Only 0,8% played through the campaign, but thats more of an issue regarding wanting to play MP instead of SP, compared to the difficulty in SpaceChem. Still surprising.

For reference, 5,8% of all players beat SMB Light world, and still 1,6% of them beat the Dark World.

Contest #21 The adventures of Lenin

As a child, Lenin visited a lot of places in the world of Calradia because his father was a travelling merchant. Although all the places were very different in climate and the sort of people, they all had one thing in common. The nobles treated their serfs horribly and bandits and other scum made the life of the common folk even worse. During his university years, he met others who shared his view: the nobles should relinquish their power to the proletariat. But Lenin’s ideas of arming and training peasants to support a revolution were deemed too radical. Soon Lenin had to flee from the university.

Lenin went to the Vaegir town of Reyvadin, where he was assaulted by a bandit. Despite not well trained in combat, Lenin’s dispatched of the assailant with ease. The commotion alarmed a local merchant, who asked for Lenin’s help. Although Lenin sympathised with the merchant, he replied that he could not help him at this point. First he wanted to share his cause with the peasants. He quickly found almost 40 men willing to join him and two companion, the bright Ymira and the archer Deshavi.

After helping out the merchant of Reyvadin, he agreed to save a maiden kidnapped by bandits. The bandits were about 30 men strong, but Lenin was confident in his peasant army and attacked them. Although the men fought bravely, the bandits were too strong. A cavalry charge broke the lines, scattering the troops. In the confusion, the volley of arrows come by surprise and severely injured most of the unarmed peasant soldiers.

Lenin managed to escape with Ymira quickly. Even though he lost his entire army, Lenin did not give up. He assembled a new party and went to the Vaegir village of Ayyike. There we trained the locals so that they can defend themselves from bandit attacks. As the villagers appreciated Lenin’s efforts, they rewarded him with more men. When the bandit horde attacked, Lenin joined the battle and brought the villagers to victory.

Now that a small foothold was established in the Vaegir kingdom, Lenin moved to the villages of Swadia. His inspirational words and his help with dealing with bandits resulted in more Swadian recruits. Unfortunately, Lenin’s success attracted the attention of the Swadian nobles. After he just freed a village from bandits, he encountered the war party of Count Rafarch, demanding that Lenin would surrender.

As the men refused to give up Lenin and Lenin in turn refused to leave his men behind, there was only one option: die in battle. The count’s forces were just too advanced. When he saw the warhorses moving in to position on open ground, Lenin acted fast.

He sent with troops to the trees, which could provide some cover against the charging cavalry. Though his decisions were wise and his men fought bravely, the struggle was futile.

The knights were too well armoured for his soldiers and the knights tore through the lines. The battle was a massacre. Once again captured, Lenin decided that next time, we would upgrade with his troops.

Contest #21

This is my character.
His name is Gaf.

Son of a hunter, and ex-poacher, he makes his way to Sargoth of the Nord kingdom with his trusty bow and two-handed ax. After fending off a violent criminal, he is approached by a merchant with a job: recruit a team and rescue his brother.

It doesn't go well.

After picking up five men in a nearby town, he is immediately ambushed by a group of bandits.

Every. Single. Recruit. Dies.

That pile of corpses? Yep.

Gaf manages to destroy the rest of the band, but he still needs to put a team together. The first villiage is now fresh out of recruits, so he heads to the next nearest town.

It doesn't go well.

He is caught by another group of bandits and promptly captured. Gaf is eventually able to break free, after being brought into Vaegir territory. He recruits some more guys, and they get killed by bandits, too.

Damnit.

So he hits one last Vaegir village. They can spare eight recruits instead of five. Nearly at a loss, Gaf spies a training field nearby and decides to give these recruits a bit of an education in the ways of the bow, sword and staff with the aid of the early morning fog.

Bringing his band back to Sargoth, he gains more information from the merchant and brings his men to meet the band of bandits outside the city. "Hold fast, let them come to us," he instructs his men.

They rout the bandits, and press a survivor for information. He reveals the location of the bandit hideout where the merchant's brother is being held. Gaf leads his men to the coast, where bandit boats wait near a cave in the rock.

Gaf rescues the merchant's brother and helps him bring the guard captain who betrayed the city to justice. His job completed, he steps out into the foggy streets, unsure what the future holds.

Updated everything so far, also sidenote: Tonight I'll give the last contests, so the whole fun here is over after tomorrow. Just wanted to mention that we'll start the LAST contest round for this steam sale gift hunt soon. Would be neat if we went out with a bang, contestant count wise ;)

| Voting Procedure for contest #23 |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CLICK THIS LINK FOR THE POST THAT INCLUDES ALL THE CONTEST SUBMISSIONS
-You have exactly one hour time to vote.
-You will vote on all the #23 entries in the Entry List.
-Bold the winner, make it clear who you voted for.
-Don't vote for yourself
"Favorite/Winner/Whatever: xyz
Ohhh that was so great, but I dont like this Toma guy." is fine, while
"OMGASPLOSION, thatwassoterriblef***metwicexyzwasbest" is not.
If you absolutely cant decide between two entries, you are free to divide your vote. This will be counted accordingly. Your votes then count "a:0,5"/"b:0,5" instead of "a:1". All this will be added up, and the highest score wins a price from the pile :) The other win in this contest goes to a random entry.
Results + Summary post for today in one hour. Then I'll work on the last batch of contests.
I just had all yesterday's contests flash up in messages from my Steam client. You aren't extending them too, are you? :p
Nope, I dont know why that happens. Seems like its automatically popping up when the time entered in steam for the contest ends.
My vote for Caerith
Edit: This is an odd competition to judge for. You can look at it by effort put in, but length doesn't necessarily mean someone else didn't go through tons of thrown out iterations. And a more well-known game can have the words relate closely to some underlying mechanics or quirks, while still being possible to appreciate.
Bah, I'm just babbling because I feel silly and would've voted for wizard's quaint skyrim lore one or mclem's more slam poetry-like PA one if I didn't like Vanillaware as much.
Contest #23
I need an adjudicator's call on something:
I liked The Wizard's simple STEAM acronym, so if I can vote for that, I will. Given it's not strictly within the terms of the contest, though, if I can't go for it, I'll instead go for LargePad's SID MEIER'S CIVILIZATION FIVE GODS AND KINGS
If you're not sure, I'll go half-and-half!
+1 to LargePad.
Sorry about that, I set the date of the contests on the steam group to the end date, else they disappear off the group page. New ones should show up when they're scheduled though!
Another one for LargePad. Really clever.
PS: Damn ARMA II on sale! Hnnngg...
PS2:
Only 30 minutes left to Vote! Please vote now fellow GAFfers! Thank you very much! :)
I hope there's another skill-based contest. And I *will* win now. :|
Yep, yep. Coming up. One turn based (strategic) skill, and one reflex skill based game contest. No demos today though, but all games I think of are VERY well known and wide spread.
Open this post in a new tab (right click the number of the post) and F5/update it once in a while. We are going to do this LIVE again.
| Day 9 - Summary |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Alright, first up, since people apparently read my summary posts (yay), quick mention that today will be the last day with new contests. It was great so far and I hope I'll get a few of you to participate in the last days contest :) Also, I decided that I'll probably give a shoutout over the GAF steam sale hunt group once we started one of the weekend contests I was talking about in my last summary post, so its probably not a bad idea to join the group to get a notification if you want to enter a possible future contest.

| Day 9 - Contest Winners |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
#21 M&B
I decided to make this one easy for the voting, since I figured not everyone would be interested in reading big amounts of text about it, so now onto drawing 2 random winners from the 7 entries, which marks this the contest with the highest chances to win btw! And the first one is mannerbot! Once again congrats, but I guess Karma is on your side after you gave back Red Orchestra yesterday. The second random winner is Htown!
Games:
mannerbot - A random game, russian roulette style, from Steam worth up to 15 bucks (sponsored by mclem) Mclem will do the randomization in case he is reading this. If he is not, I'll do it in about one hour.
Htown - Gundemonium Recollection (sponsored by Dosuchin)
#23 Acronymization
First up, voting results:
LargePad 6
gabbo 1
mclem 1
Caerith 1
mannerbot 1
Now that one was a clear victory. Glad that so much effort paid off :) Random winner from the other 20 entries is SalsaShark!
Games:
LargePad - Dota 2 (sponsored by Calidor)
SalsaShark - AirMech (sponsored by Dosuchin)
Congrats everyone! New contests coming up soon. Already decided on the games, now only considering the creative end contest.
why not give him a $15 game of his choosing? that's just evil :(
Hah, Russian Roulette sounds fun. I have to go soon and will likely be afk when it happens though. @_@
I'll add the russian roulette post to the summary later, simply check the post again when you are back :)
Thanks, although I'll probably return my games back to someone in the gaf ecosystem or give them to friends (I have enough as is!)
And congratulations to the others, as well. Looking forward to the roulette post.
You are free to do with them whatever you wish. Just let me know whether I need to contact the people in question for gifting them to you or whether you want to keep them in the prize pile. I dont care either way :) Just want to avoid going 3 ways just to end where we started.
Just don't make it DLC for a game they don't own 'cause that would be true evil.
I'll need a little time to get proceedings going, but the intent is only to go for base games within the pricetag. If it's very cheap, I'll probably keep doing it, so you might get several... or just the one.
Edit: Oh, mannerbot has to go soon? I can speed stuff up if you like so you're present for it. How long do I have?
Edit2: Or I could do it at the same time as tomorrow's live post. Would that work better?
Contest #24 Dungeons of Dredmor - Highscore
No demos today, but I figure many people already own the games. They are cheap too. DoD can be had for 1,99€ atm. Without further ado, contest rules:
- Difficulty: Dwarfish Moderation
- Permadeath ON (no reloading)
- No time to grind (smaller dungeons)
- You are free to chose your skills however you want, props if your highscore was done with a random set of skills and you tell us how ridiculous it was
- Screenshot of your score (the first RIP screen after the YOU HAVE DIED message)
- 1 highscore winner + 1 random winner
- Use your own screenshots!
- Contest runs until the next batch of daily deals goes up, so tomorrow 7pm GMT+2, might extend if we need more time
Have fun dying!
Just ask him via PM when he'll be available. You can do it when you set a time for it together.
